George Jonas’s Vengeance utilises various conventions of crime fiction as the structure of his book though Vengeance is categorised as a non-fiction. Jonas structured Vengeance resembling to the events of the Munich Olympics Massacre and the action taken in regards to the massacre, which therefore, reflects to the idea of a realistic aspect and a crime perception involved in this novel, relating and sympathising to the statement of the usage of conventions of crime fiction in this non-fiction novel. The novel is described through a detailed, specific and a realistic setting and this was seen when Avner was in Israel and received a letter. Throughout the novel, Jonas uses various places such as Israel, New York and more various non-fictional places to authenticate his novel for the viewers to connect more with the novel. An example shown was when Avner received a letter and decided to pay a visit at the address that was specified, Jonas utilises the environment and describes that specific place in details to symbolise a realistic setting. “If his aunt’s friend had come through with a job of any kind at El Al, Avner would never have rung the bell of Apartment 5 on the second floor of a nondescript building on Borochov Street. “ (Jonas, p.30) As shown in the example, the description of the setting is specified and detailed. This was accomplished through Jonas describing the place Avner was specifically at. The quote demonstrates to the readers that, Avner is currently at an Apartment numbered 5, second floor that is located on Borochov Street at El Al. Jonas uses specific and accurate setting of the place at which Avner was at, and this therefore relates back to the amount of realistic details Jonas used which consequently, conveys the usage of a detailed, specific and realistic convention of the setting to connect the readers to familiar places and demonstrate that this novel is a non-fictional novel though it uses a crime fiction …show more content…
When Avner was assigned to join amongst a few field agents called Mossad in Europe, Jonas used analogy between the past and the present events of Avner, to convey his characteristic to the readers. “He was a Yekke among the Galicianers, though it didn’t bother him much. In fact, being a Yekke was probably an asset in the Mossad. In the kibbutz the Galicianers didn’t really need him: they could do everything better themselves. But here, especially among field agents working in Europe, having the odd Yekke on board did not hurt.” (Jonas, Pg. 53) Jonas described the convention of crime fiction and demonstrated the characteristics of Avner, the protagonist, was drawn to be part of the Mossad, which is described as a closed social environment. Through reintroducing Avner’s experience in Kibbutz, Jonas reestablished the characteristic of the protagonist that resembled a crime fiction
