...1. For this media analysis assignment, I have chosen to analyze the Trayvon Martin case. I decided to write about this case because the incident only occurred two years ago, which means the problem still exists today. I feel this case is important to call attention to because it highlights the violation of political and civil rights of the people and it emphasizes the larger issues that the United States are facing. This news story did not only circulate in the United States. It reached different parts of the world with the news going viral through the internet, social media, television channels, and international newspaper headlines. Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old African American teenager, was walking back home from a relative’s place when he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch coordinator, was suspicious of the teen, so he followed Martin and disregarded the police’s orders of not going after him. Although Martin was not armed, Zimmerman claimed that the shot was fired as a result of self-defense. Many people, both nationally and globally, were caught up with following Trayvon Martin’s story. At the same time, protests were growing rapidly across the nation. This case helped raise questions about the media coverage and how media can be misleading, biased, and effective. ...State of Florida v. George Zimmerman Abstract Our group chose to do the highly debatable case regarding George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. Based on the various parts from group members, it would seem we have both sides of the case so there will be discussion from either point of view. Our paper is not going to sway the reader in either direction, but simply state the facts for each side and give an overview of the case from our perspective. Introduction Within the last year, our country has seen one of the most high-profile murder cases unfold. This case is none other than the State of Florida v. George Zimmerman, for the charges of second-degree murder of Trayvon Martin. Johnson English 102 December 2014 This past summer on August 9th, in Ferguson Missouri, Officer Darren Wilson heard a dispatcher report of a stealing in progress. Following protocol, Officer Wilson radioed in to offer help to the officers searching for the suspects in question. Wilson’s offer wasn’t needed due to the fact that the suspects had disappeared. Moments later Wilson drove past two young black males and ordered them to move off the street. After a second look, Wilson realized one of the young men matched the description of the stealing progress. Wilson radioed for backup and in little over minute and young man lay dead at the scene. He was unarmed. That young man was Michael Brown; the 18-year-old black boy who’s shooting this past summer sparked a major controversy and raised a lot of questions about Police Shootings in the U.S. and their undeniably pattern of racial issues. Currently young black males risk of being shot by police officers is 21 times more likely greater than young white males (Staples).
