...me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton. — Sir Raymond Priestley, Antarctic Explorer and Geologist On January 18, 1915, the ship Endurance, carrying a highly celebrated British polar expedition, froze into the icy waters off the coast of Antarctica. The leader of the expedition, Sir Ernest Shackleton, had planned to sail his boat to the coast through the Weddell Sea, which bounded Antarctica to the north, and then march a crew of six men, supported by dogs and sledges, to the Ross Sea on the opposite side of the continent (see Exhibit 1).1 Deep in the southern hemisphere, it was early in the summer, and the Endurance was within sight of land, so Shackleton still had reason to anticipate reaching shore. The ice, however, was unusually thick for the ship’s latitude, and an unexpected southern wind froze it solid around the ship. Within hours the Endurance was completely beset, a wooden island in a sea of ice. More than eight months later, the ice still held the vessel. Instead of melting and allowing the crew to proceed on its mission, the ice, moving with ocean currents, had carried the boat over 670 miles north.2 As it moved, the ice slowly began to soften, and the tremendous force of distant currents alternately broke apart the floes—wide plateaus made of thousands of tons of ice—and pressed them back together, creating rift lines with huge piles of broken ice slabs. For months the wooden timbers of the Endurance...

...Patient Teaching–Incentive Spirometer Sergei Pugachov Georgia Southern University School of Nursing Dr. Linda Upchurch NURS 3163 An incentive spirometer is a device that our patients use to improve the function of their lungs. This main underlying principle is that breathing can be exercised to train the expansion of lungs capacity (Potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall, 2013). Patients who qualify for this intervention include those who have recently had a surgery, were under anesthesia, or have been placed on bed rest. Our main concern here is that these situations create opportunity for less activity within the lungs, which can put the patient at risk for pneumonia. The goal of incentive spirometer is to keep the lungs active while the patient is recovering. Deep breathing can be practiced at home or while being hospitalized. At home, it can be used to prepare for hospitalization or a surgery (Potter, 2013). In either case, nurses are responsible for providing appropriate education regarding the use and administration of all patient equipment. The incentive spirometer is used while sitting straight up on the edge of a bed or in a chair. For patients who are unable to move or sit up, it will be necessary to raise the head of their bed to an appropriate angle. Prior to starting the exercise, lungs should be emptied by fully exhaling. After exhaling, the patient places the mouthpiece in the mouth. For maximum efficiency, it is best to make sure that the mouth...

All come to us, of course, through the white man's eye, ear, and pen. Were it not for white missionaries, explorers, and frontier negotiators (the go-betweens known as "wood's men"), we would have a much sparser record of the Indian response to colonists and their "civilizing" campaigns. . * Royal Library of Denmark “The natives, the so-called savages” Francis Daniel Pastorius, Pennsylvania, 1700 Pastorius was the founder of German Town, the first German settlement in Pennsylvania. 2 Philip Georg Friedrich von Reck “The supreme commander of the Yuchi Indian nation, whose name is Kipahalgwa” Georgia, 1736 The natives, the so-called savages . . . they are, in general, strong, agile, and supple people, with blackish bodies. ...Running head: SAVANNAH’S HISTORIC BED AND BREAKFAST ROMANTIC RETREAT Savannah’s Historic Bed and Breakfast Romantic Retreat Tinika M. Dowdell Dr. Benjamin C. Bao, Ph.D. Marketing Management-MKT 500 May 5, 2011 Executive Summary When starting a Bed & Breakfast business the key is to turn your property or future property into a place where guests can come, relax & feel at home. The location does not matter where you decide to set up your business. The business can be in a rural town. It can be in the middle of the countryside, or in a suburb or in the middle of a metropolis location. However, be aware that there are “several tax write offs in place for Bed and Breakfast Owners, more than any other physical business, store, or restaurant” (Barbara Notarius & Gail S. Brewer, 2001). The reasoning for this is because “the government realizes that owners depend on every dollar he or she may receive from guests to maintain their home operation and may not always have guests or money earned” (Barbara Notarius & Gail S. Brewer, 2001). In addition, there are programs that exist which sponsors “Government or State owned seized or repossessed property for free as long as the business owner can turn the property into long term money making lodging operation” (Why B&B, 2011), whether it is a Bed and Breakfast, guest farmhouse, hotel, inn, or lodge. ... Margaret Njigua Northshore Community College Psychology 118 Professor Stanga April 14, 2014 The Color Purple is a novel that was written in 1982 by Alice Walker. It was later adapted into a film and musical of the same name. Taking place mostly in rural Georgia, the story focuses on the life of women of color in the southern United States and addresses numerous issues including their exceedingly low position in American social culture. Born in 1895, Celie who is the main character was raised on a farm in a small town in Georgia where formal education took a back seat to physical labor and household maintenance, and the Church was the main focal point of socialization among local town members. The Color Purple chronicles the startling tragedy and triumph of Celie in her struggle for self-empowerment, sexual freedom, and spiritual growth in the early twentieth century. Its winter 1909 and Celie is fourteen years old. Her step-father, who she thinks is her real father, sexually and verbally abuses her. He impregnates Celie and she gives birth to a girl, whom he steals and is later presumably killed in the woods. Celie has a second...

...Federal Prison Comparison Team A CJA/234 Robin Marmon-Instructor September 22, 2014 There are many different types of prisons and federal penitentiaries throughout the Unites States of America and many of them are l out differently but all possess similar regulations as far as visiting, employment and rehabilitative services are concerned. It makes no difference if; you are young or old in age, have medical issues, race or ethnicity, if you commit a crime you are going to serve time in some type of correctional facility or be state property in some form such as; probation or parole. The type of correctional facility that you will be sent to really depends on the level of crime you commit. If it is a superior level crime you will be sent to a correctional facility but if it is a federal offense you will be set to a federal correctional facility which will each have a different level of security based on how extensive the crime is that you committed. Here is an example of a variety of different federal penitentiaries. General Manuel Noriega, former Panamanian Dictator from 1983 to 1989. ...The greatest of the silent clowns is Buster Keaton, not only because of what he did, but because of how he did it. Harold Lloyd made us laugh as much, Charlie Chaplin moved us more deeply, but no one had more courage than Buster. I define courage as Hemingway did: "Grace under pressure." In films that combined comedy with extraordinary physical risks, Buster Keaton played a brave spirit who took the universe on its own terms, and gave no quarter. I'm immersed in his career right now, viewing all of the silent features and many of the shorts with students at the University of Chicago. Having already written about Keaton's "The General" (1927) in this series, I thought to choose another title. "The Navigator," perhaps, or "Steamboat Bill, Jr.," or "Our Hospitality." But they are all of a piece; in an extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies. Most of these movies were long thought to be lost. "The General," with Buster as a train engineer in the Civil War, was always available, hailed as one of the supreme masterpieces of silent filmmaking. But other features and shorts existed in shabby, incomplete prints, if at all, and it was only in the 1960s that film historians began to assemble and restore Keaton's lifework. Now almost everything has been recovered, restored, and is available on DVDs and tapes that range from watchable to sparkling. It's said...
