...Matt Broach Heidewald C271 1 May 2014 Top 3 Ideas from German MBA Paper As a Kelley student, it is important to be aware of not only business in the United States, but also business all over the world. For this reason I was very excited to see that we as a class would have the opportunity to speak with a set of actual international students who know how business is done internationally, specifically in Germany. Of all of the interesting information I learned from the Q and A session, I believe that the most valuable would be Germany’s directness, the value of honesty, and the fact that it can often be much harder to break the ice with Germans. The first tip that I would try to convey to a student interested in doing business in Germany would be that the German people are very direct. The MBA students gave an example of an interaction between a student and a professor. If a student were to be asked a question in class that they didn’t know in America, he said that the student would likely try to “bullshit” his way out of it (Bruggemann, Spindler). This differs vastly in Germany due to their directness. Rather than try to talk themselves out of the question, they would be direct with their professor and admit that they did not know the answer. This type of distinction would be extremely helpful to an American traveling to Germany. Secondly, it is important to note that Germans value honesty. “Germans do not like surprises. Sudden changes in business transactions...

...German Expressionism ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ is a film from the 1920’s and was the most influential and significant film that belongs to the German expressionism film movement. German Expressionism, as it name shows, highlights the expressions of the internal opinions, beliefs, and feelings via the use of artistic, stylistic materials and fundamentals. It had a main goal to advance life, especially, change. Therefore, it may be considered an evolution revealing German civilization through these times of alteration or change. Due to the loss of the German’s in WWI and its consequences, the movement’s plot was about madness, insanity, and poverty. It’s not just a story telling but it had communal, civilizing, and political features. Expressionist first film was ‘The Student of Prague’ (1913), then comes the first vampire movie in 1916 ‘ Nache des Gravens’ (Night of Horror), ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ in 1920, and ‘The Golen’ (how we came into the world)… All these films have their special style, the style that specialize the German Expressionism movement. It’s characterized by relying heavily on the story and design, mise-en-scene, with the weird ambiance and work of art but lightly on editing. According to the shooting, the camera moves slightly with unpredictable camera’s position. ...ART WORLD Art House: An Introduction to German Expressionist Films Alissa Darsa, Thursday, December 26, 2013 Robert Wiene, Stills for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (three works) (1919). Gelatin silver print, sold at Christie's New York. Welcome to the first article in Art House, a series detailing the evolution of art house films, and their impact on the relationship between art and cinema. The term art house refers to films that are artistic or experimental in nature, and are generally not part of the commercial mainstream. It is interesting to note that unlike many other forms of avant-garde, filmic avant-garde does not typically generate the profits earned by its musical, visual, and literary counterparts. Most artists who have produced avant-garde films have had to rely on other artistic media as a source of income, including Andy Warhol (American, 1928–1987).1 However, there are several films that have crossed over into the realm of mainstream cinema, and have been both financially successful as well as stylistically influential. This article focuses on German Expressionism, one of the earliest artistic genres to influence filmmaking, and one that arguably paved the way for many other avant-garde styles and techniques. ...How far does the role of individuals explain the outbreak of the German Wars of Unification? The German Wars of Unification can be blamed on a myriad of reasons however the pragmatism of Otto Von Bismarck often allowed him to take advantage and shape the course of German history. Conversely it would be remiss to state that Bismarck was solely responsible for the German Wars of Unification, nationalist elements as well as growing calls for liberalism all spurred the way for the beginning of a German state. Compounding this was the economic prosperity of Prussia, as Prussia grew economically stronger it diminished Austria’s sphere of influence in the region. This would also spur calls for greater German unity whilst isolating Austria. Prussian ambition can be first seen to rival Austria with the creation of the Zollverein. Prussia in 1818 created a law to integrate Prussian customs systems onto neighbouring small states, over the next fifteen years through a complex mixture of threats and concessions the Prussians managed to create a concrete policy that would lay the foundations for the Zollverein. In 1833 the Zollverein was created and most importantly Austria was firmly excluded. The importance of this is summed up in Metternich’s quote “a smaller rival confederation..which all too quickly will become accustomed to following its own objectives with its own means”. Metternich’s fears would eventually become a reality, this is reiterated by the historian Treitschke...

...German business culture tips Keep in mind most of this is copy and pasted and has not been reworded and extracted yet. Background of German business culture In Germany, much greater attention has been paid to academic, technical education and its value to business in general. Therefore, companies tend to be run by technical experts rather than lawyers and accountants and this is reflected in the high regard in which engineers are held by other Germans. Diligence and competence are characteristics which are held in high esteem by colleagues and are seen as the key indicators of performance. Appraisal systems based on the softer competencies as favoured by many U.K. and U.S. firms are still not common in traditional German companies. German business structures Most of the power in German companies is vested in the hands of a few senior managers. Larger companies (AG & GmbH) have a Supervisory Board (Aufsichtsrat) which appoints the Management Board (Vorstand). The management board is the final decision-maker on policy matters which affect management. However below Vorstand level, companies tend to have a strictly hierarchical approach within which individual's specific roles and responsibilities are tightly defined and compartmentalised. This results in a methodical approach to most business issues where procedures and adherence to well-defined rules are respected. This methodical approach has both good and bad points. On the plus side, everybody knows what is expected...

...Germany is located at the center of the European continent, sitting between the nations of eastern and Western Europe. “Germany is the third-largest nation in the European Union after France and Spain” (Gordon, 2005, p. 4). For this project I chose to interview a neighbor of mine, Edie Standorf. In this paper I will share some of the cultural norms that she shared with me and how life transitioning from a child growing up in Germany to an adult now living in the United States of America. I will also share with you some interesting facts that I was able to learn about while researching the German culture. Edie Standorf grew up in Germany as Edie Borret from 1927 to 1955. When she was 18 years old she chose to move to the U.S leaving the majority of her friends and family behind to start her new life. Edie stated that the process of becoming a U.S. citizen was long and frustrating at time but it was well worth the work involved. There was a year long application process through the American Consulate located in Munich Germany. She was required to pass a physical, could not be pregnant, or have any communicable diseases before she was able to enter the United States. Edie was required to have an American sponsor until she either reached the age of 21 or was married. Her sponsor was her cousin, Rosie who she lived and worked with during this sponsorship. When asked what Edie’s man reason for choosing to come to America was she stated that she came because one of her...

...Nosferatu and German Expressionism Expressionism itself was an artistic movement that occurred in Europe in the early nineteen hundreds. The movement is said to have started around “1908 as a style of painting and the theatre”. The movement spread across Europe but Germany was considered the epicenter of Expressionism, where it was said to be more intense than any other nation in Europe. The Expressionist style was essentially a rejection of realism. In painting, artists would not use the clever shading techniques, for example, to make the subject look real, like painters at the time had been doing for so long. They might use brighter or darker colors and make people look distorted and often creepy and grotesque. “In late February 1920, a film premiered in Berlin that was instantly recognized as something new in cinema: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”. Although Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene, was considered the first Expressionist film and would spark a massive movement in the film industry, it did not come as much of a shock to a lot of film critics since the movement was already so prevalent in other art forms. Nonetheless, many more film makers followed suit in making movies that featured the Expressionist style. One such movie was Nosferatu. Made in 1922 and directed by F.W. Murnau, Nosferatu was for all intents and purposes a horror film. The protagonist, Hutter, who works for a real estate company, is sent to the mysterious estate of a potentially huge...

...Discuss the impact of Germany’s foreign policy on the balance of power in Europe in the period 1870-1914. Before discussing the impact of Germany’s foreign policy on the balance of power in Europe in the period 1870-1914. I would like to define what the balance of power is. From the period 1870 to 1914, the balance of power can be defined as every nation, big or small, had the right to exist, and that no country should be too powerful to threaten the security of other countries. To be precise, the military equilibrium to be backed up by political, economic and diplomatic powers. General peace could be secured. During 1870-1914, Bismarck and Kaiser Williams II, who were in position of power in different periods, had a different approach towards foreign policy. The basis of Bismarck policy was to maintain the status quo while that of Kaiser William II was global aggrandizement in nature. During 1870-1890, the real power, which determined the future destiny of Germany, was held in the hands of Bismarck. Experiencing the hardship of the unification, Bismarck had adopted a cautious policy. The basis of his foreign policy was to maintain the status quo in order to consolidate what Germany had gained after 1871. The core of his foreign policy was to isolate France, to avoid unnecessary conflicts and to keep peace between Russia and Austria. The “Bismarckian alliance system” was his agent to fulfill his aim. Isolating France was the mainspring of his foreign policy...

...todas? Quiero decirte por qué alemán es mejor que español. [Hello, how is everyone? I want to tell you why German is better than Spanish] B. (Thesis, Need statement, Outline) To determine which language class to take at SHS, two factors must be considered: difficulty, which can further be broken down more into grammar, pronunciation, and similarity to English, and usefulness. II. Body C. The difficulty of a language varies from person to person (because no two people learn the exact same) and can depend upon grammar, pronunciation, and the similarity to one’s native language. 1. Grammar a. Cases – A case is defined by Merriam-Webster as an inflectional form of a noun, pronoun, or adjective indicating its grammatical relation to other words. i. German has 4 cases – the nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive. Definite articles and adjective endings change depending on each case. The nominative marks the subject, the accusative marks direct object, the dative marks the indirect object, and genitive shows ownership. ii. Spanish does not have cases, but it does show ownership similar to the way German does. In Spanish, one would say el coche de mi madre and in German one would say das Auto meiner Mutter. Both phrases literally translate to “the car of my mother” b. Gender Both German and Spanish have grammatical gender – that is nouns being classified as masculine, feminine, or neuter. Spanish...

...eighteenth century, Germany was fragmented into many different states that were grouped under the Holy Roman Empire. Before the revolutions of 1848, different groups of people expressed their concern about the political, economic, and social order in the German states. The liberal middle class wanted to unify Germany because of their nationalistic views; the aristocrats were mainly conservative who feared unification because it would bring disaster to them politically; the working class was oppressed economically and socially. The liberals wanted Germany to unify, so it could become politically and economically stronger. During Napoleon’s rule there became a movement of nationalism through the German state. Unification could not happen...

...German American Culinary History According to The Library of Congress, Germans started settling in America in 1608 in Jamestown. In the 1700’s more German immigrants started to come, this included Moravians, Amish, Waldensians, Swiss Mennonites, Baptist Dunkers, and Schwenkfelders. Half of these people came to work in America in exchange for passage across the Atlantic. In order for them to do this they had to agree to work for four to seven years. In the 1800’s the majority of German immigrated to America for political reasons. In addition, Russia had given privileges for the Germans to farm on their land for centuries, but in 1872, this was revoked resulting in about 100,000 Germans to come to America with their wheat farming skills. ...Germans are direct. In German culture it isn’t rude to say negative things. Both generally pessimistic things, and actual criticism of the person you’re talking to. It’s normal to casually mention to your friend when they say or do something dumb, or tell a coworker that they are working too slowly, or doing something incorrectly. It’s not taken personally and it isn’t meant personally either. They are very direct and to the point people, if they don’t like something, they will tell you. They don’t believe in being sympathetic to people’s feelings, that’s just wasting time. This can sometimes come across as rude to people who are not used to this style of communication. On the other side of things, Germans can get annoyed with people who don’t just get to the point and tell them what they need to know. George mentioned how American friendships seem very superficial. People...
