With the ever-accelerated living tempo and fiercer competition, the amount adolescents sleep has declined over the years and insomnia is on the rise (Foster, 327). Although the lack of sleep is becoming an increasingly worrisome problem, many older adolescents still find it difficult to cultivate the habit of keeping early hours (Roenneberg, 1038). The questions, then, arise: Should adolescents really get up early in the morning? Will getting up early ensure their body health and study efficiency? Although an overwhelming majority of people firmly believe that going to bed early and getting up early is of great benefit, research carried out by Dr. Paul Kelley from Oxford University indicated that getting up later is a healthier and simpler …show more content…
Benjamin Franklin also played on the common quote “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” (Franklin, 1732) In addition to that, Harvard Medical School Professor Charles A. Czeisler states that “many educators think that adolescents learn best in the morning and the reason why some adolescents are weary and irritable is that they stay up too late, or they are too lazy to wake up early in the morning.” (Czeisler, 52) The conventional belief these educators maintain is that if adolescents can cultivate the habit of going to sleep earlier, it would help them learn better in school and improve their performance in class. As a result, although there is no research calculating the exact average start time of middle school in China and the start time vary from province to province, many of the middle schools starts at around 07:20 according to numerous studies reporting timetables which educators in certain local middle schools …show more content…
Kelley’s research, people’s performance in school will improve if they are encouraged to follow their own biological clock and the impact is greater for those at the lower end of distribution of test scores. The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), with 146,687 students in all grades for the 2011–12 school year, including all public schools in that area. According to Edward Finely’s paper, since 1995, “WCPSS has operated under a three-tiered system” (Finely, 975) (In this article, only the data of Tiers I and II is shown since only Tiers I and II are consist of middle and high schools). Although the exact stat times are slightly different, Tier I schools begin at approximately 7:30 and Tier II schools at 8:15. Roughly half of the schools were required to start earlier, and the other half were required to start later. For both the reading and math tests, students from schools changing to earlier start scored approximately 1.6% less than before, while students from schools changing to later start scored 2.4% higher. Further study also shown that the 2.4% gain remained two years later when these students entered higher grades (Kelley, 210). Moreover, Edward Finely observed that the effect is largest for students whose scores are below average, indicating that later start times could narrow the gap between students’ performance (Finely, 975). Although the statistics are not significantly different, the results questioned the conventional belief of

Argument Essay

...Are you in high school and is it hard for you to stay concentrated throughout the whole school day or is it hard for you to get up in the morning? The reason why you can’t concentrate at school is because we may be starting school too early in the morning. Most high schools start at around 8:00 in the morning. Since the start time is 8:00am most of the students would have to get up at around 6:00-6:30am in order to make it on time. They have to get up that early because most of the would probably like to shower, have time to get dressed and make final adjustments. Then you have to eat breakfast because that is the most important meal of the day. With all of that, you are talking about an hour or so to get ready. Finally, you have the time it takes to get to school by either the bus, car, bicycles, or even walking. Everyone has complained about how early they have to get up for school. My siblings do it, my friends do it, I do it, and even my mom does it when she is a substitute teacher for our school. Dawn Wallace, whose 16-year-old daughter attends Polytech High School in Woodside states that "We have to get my daughter up at 5:30 in the morning. It takes a few alarms to get her out of bed. How do they expect children to be alert and ready to learn when they're not getting the proper amount of sleep?” It’s my junior year this year and I couldn’t be more overwhelmed with school. I have test to study for tests, do homework in pretty much every subject and then I have to try...

Should High School Start Later

...Schools across the world have such an early start time and little do they know how it’s affecting their students. In my communities case, it’s waking up around 5 or 6 in the morning and being in class by 7:25. If you take the bus to school you are up before most students. Most students are up until late night or early morning completing school assignments. This also plays a part in the early starting times. School effects when you go to sleep, the number of hours you get when you sleep and when you have to wake up. And no, it’s not procrastination causing these late nights. Students are involved in afterschool activities, work, sports and other events. The first bell at school rings too early and should be pushed to later in the morning. If this happens, students will be getting the amount of sleep they need each night, better grades will appear and they will be much healthier. It’s been proven with science that lack of sleep makes learning difficult. When you don’t get enough sleep your thought process slows down and your memory gets impaired. School can be hard enough for students and the lack of sleep makes it even worse. If we started at a later time students would be able to sleep longer. More sleep means better...

...Creating a new start time for school brings a bad vision to our school year. Students would have to get used to waking up at a different high school time. By changing this time schedule, teens would still go to bed when they want to, there would be confusion with afterschool activities, and waking up early anyways prepares us for the real world. Teens always have had a bedtime when we were younger , but we would never would actually go too asleep at that time. School Should Start Later

...Why We Need More Sleep Don't you hate waking up early in the morning? Almost every weekday, high school students are waking up around six o'clock in the morning to get ready for school, some even earlier. It's not practical for high school classes to start at 7:44. It's just too early for teenage minds to function properly. Our school should start at least an hour later than that. With the extra hour, our attendance would improve, as well as our grades and attitudes. The facts are all there, so why shouldn't the hours change? On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has affected their academic performance in a bad way (“Sleep Rocks”). Sleep deprivation impairs students’ ability to be alert, pay attention, solve problems, cope with stress, and retain information. Academic performances on...

The Whys and Wherefores of Daylight Savings Time

...The Whys and Wherefores of Daylight Saving Time The question I always ask myself on the second Sunday morning in March when I look at the clock upon waking up and see that is already an hour later than my usual waking hour, is “Why?” I feel I am already behind and I scramble to catch up all day long and then, when the clock tells me that it is time to go to bed, I really don’t feel like it, but know if I don’t, the next morning will bring a struggle to wake up and get going. And then along comes the first Sunday in November. It’s easy to get up – the sun is where it should be. But around eight or nine o’clock in the evening I feel myself getting drowsy, but have to wage a painful battle to stay awake because I know if I go to bed too early, the next day I will be waking up hours before I should. So, once again, I ask why? Why can’t they just leave the time alone! I say it’s time to stop the insanity of Daylight Saving Time once and for all. Just as many people enjoy early morning light as do extended evening light and if there is no real evidence of energy savings during DST, it’s time to do away with it. The story goes that Benjamin Franklin (remember “early to bed and early to rise”) was the first American to suggest Daylight Saving Time (and, by the way, it is Saving, not Savings as most of us say) because he felt that not using that extra early morning daylight in the summer months was just wasteful. But he never was able to implement it. The first year Daylight Saving...
