...various resorts around the water in both states. After World War II and till this day, the area went under major renovations to change from a resort area to year round residences. A fellow friend of mine and resident of Bergen County was kind enough to share her experiences with the supernatural, all which occurred right under her own roof. It is not surprising that an area with so much history and life would generate ghostly phenomena. What makes this ghost story so interesting is that it is so unexpected. Sitting on a cold bench, right before practice, I figured I would ask around to see if anyone had any good ghost stories to tell. Little did I know that I would find one that would send chills down my spine. As the oldest sibling growing up in their two story house in Bergen county, Dana remembers a lot of her childhood as well as her brothers, who is only a couple of years younger. She made known that her house was in fact a vacation home that had the luxury of having the lake right in the backyard. It is a two-story house and after moving in they decided to put on addition. Prior to the addition and back when it was just a vacation home, a family who had two little boys occupied the house. The events that took place...

In this way, Nils can finish the job on time with higher cost. Or simply outsource a firm. Superstitions and ghost stories going around the region is another dimension of the challenge. Nils has to find a way to deal with it too. Maybe he can ask hotel management to hire a temporary specialist to change the image. 2) What would you do and why? Discuss briefly. (10 marks) I am from Turkey and I am very familiar to superstitions which imposes behavior of publics. In these kind of cases, it is not so likely and easy to convince a person to believe there is no such thing as ghost. Instead of fighting against paranormal with rationalist point of view, I would come up with an idea from Thai’s own belief set. In other words, Ghost stories could be a part of Thai culture and most of the people may believe the existence of evil spirits. However 95% of the Thailand population follow Buddhism religion which encourages people to approach to those evil spirits with kindness and goodness. Buddha himself teaches his followers not to scare from these ghosts. If I were Nils, I would use Buddhist religion against Thai culture and tradition. Moreover, I would start a campaign to attract people thanks to the holiness of the region. If it is necessary to be cruel, I can even...

Below there!’ When he heard a voice thus calling to him, he was standing at the door of his box, with a flag in his hand, furled round its short pole. One would have thought, considering the nature of the ground, that he could not have doubted from what quarter the voice came; but instead of looking up to where I stood on the top of the steep cutting nearly over his head, he turned himself about, and looked down the Line. There was something remarkable in his manner of doing so, though I could not have said for my life what. But I know it was remarkable enough to attract my notice, even though his figure was foreshortened and shadowed, down in the deep trench, and mine was high above him, so steeped in the glow of an angry sunset, that I had shaded my eyes with my hand before I saw him at all. ‘Halloa! Below!’ From looking down the Line, he turned himself about again, and, raising his eyes, saw my figure high above him. ‘Is there any path by which I can come down and speak to you?’ 2 of 97 Three Ghost Stories He looked up at me without replying, and I looked down at him without pressing him too soon with a repetition of my idle question. Just then there came a vague vibration in the...

...die. Eventually everyone’s father dies. Hamlet is sad and angry at the same time. I think that Hamlet is resentful towards his mother, Gertrude. Hamlet feels that his mother has not mourned his father appropriately, that her mourning was too brief. He is also angry with her and his uncle for getting married. Hamlet feels that the marriage was too soon after the late King’s death. I think Hamlet is also bothered by the fact that Gertrude married her brother-in-law. Hamlet views it as being incestuous. There are more layers added to Hamlet’s mind. The ghost of his father appears to him in the fifth scene of the first act. The ghost tells Hamlet that he was murdered by his own brother. The ghost accuses King Claudius of pouring poison in his ear while he slept in the garden one afternoon. Hamlet is overwhelmed with this revelation. “O, my prophetic soul! My uncle!” (Shakespeare, 1600, p. 928). The ghost tells Hamlet that he must avenge his...

...The themes in the Canterville Ghost The Canterville Ghost is a ghost story. Ghost stories belong to the genre called horror literature, whose purpose is to scare the reader with situations that cause horror or fear. The most common technique is suspense, the slow insinuating of a doubt or of a frightening revelation, which keeps the reader interested. This story can be defined an inverted ghost story, because a lot of elements are different from the traditional ones. The main difference is the fact that Mr Otis is not scared by the ghost, while usually people should be. Moreover, the Ghost itself is frightened by the Otis twins. There is also comic relief bordering on farce, including buckets of water balanced on half-open doors. But the story has a dark centre. The crime and retribution which led to the haunting is ghastly, and this is really not a comedy at all, but a tale of redemption through the power of love. The innocent girl of the family, appropriately called Virginia, prays for the ghost and endures terrifying if unnamed experiences to release the ghost. Also, The Canterville Ghost is both a parody of the traditional ghost story and a satire of the American way of life. Wilde obviously intends to satirize American materialism, but he pokes fun at English traditional culture as well. American vs. British society: “The Canterville Ghost” is a study in contrasts. Wilde takes an American family, places them in a British setting, then, through a series...

...of Hamlet, the ghost of King Hamlet comes back to the kingdom to tell his son, Hamlet, how he did not suffer a natural death, but rather was sinfully murdered. His death occurred because his own brother and Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, poured poison down King Hamlet’s ear while he was asleep, so that he could take over the Royal Throne of Denmark. King Hamlet’s ghost then commands Hamlet to fulfill his duty and seek revenge for him by killing Claudius. The ghost reappears later in the play, since Hamlet has still not managed to kill Claudius up to this point, and reminds him to stay focused on fulfilling the commandment he has given him. The ghost claims that he has come back to whet, or sharpen, his request for the death of Claudius, which seems to have been blunted, or dulled, by Hamlet’s actions. Hamlets purpose has been blunted throughout the play in many ways, and he fails to quickly take action for avenging the death of his father. Hamlet is not sure whether he believes the story of King Hamlet’s murder, one of the reasons for Hamlet’s inaction. Hamlet thinks that, “The spirit that [he] have seen may be a and the hath power T’ assume a pleasing shape…” (II. 627-629). Hamlet thinks that an evil spirit may have taken the ghostly form of his late King and father and this causes him to have second thoughts on what this ghost has commanded him to do to Claudius. He thinks that there is a chance that Claudius may not have murdered his father, and that the ghost may just be trying...

...Jake Nevins 3/15/13 English foundations honors 2 Mrs. Muratori Research paper hamlet INTRO Hamlet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare where the main character, Hamlet, Thesis: In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet mythological and biblical allusions informs us of Hamlet’s inevitable fall. Throughout the play, Hamlet uses many mythological allusions to show his feelings towards other characters such as Claudius, Gertrude and the old king as well as inform us of his “fall”. After Queen Gertrude is re-married to Claudius, Hamlet shows his feelings when he compares the late King Hamlet to Claudius. Hamlet tells his mother, "So excellent a king, that was to this / Hyperion to a satyr." (Ham. I ii 139-40). This allusion shows Hamlet's high praise for his dead father as well as his extreme hatred for Claudius. Hyperion is the Greek sun god. By comparing his dead father to Hyperion, Hamlet does not just connect his father to a titan, but also the source of light and with that hope and happiness. The sun is what also sustains life. Hamlet is alluding to how his father was a great king, a strong and dynamic leader that cared for his family and strength of Denmark. The sun also symbolizes warmth and glory which are qualities reflected upon his father. A good king, like the sun, is also a keeper of the peace who watches from above. It is evident that Hamlet greatly loved his father and is stunned by how his mother quickly moved on after his death to marry...

...Turn of the screw was published in 1898 and written by Henry James. It is a Gothic novella detailing the disturbing and ambiguous events that a young governess experiences during her time at Bly, the country house is which the children and their caretakers live. From the beginning of her stay at Bly and up until the end of the novella, the young Governess is plagued by visions of spectral figures (a man named Quint and a woman called Miss Jessel) that seem to take particular interest in the Governesses young charges( a boy named Miles and his younger sister named Flora). It is hinted, by the head of the house, that the spectral figures, which were previous caretakers of the children before their ambiguous deaths, engaged in illicit activities that led to the corruption of the children; corruption of innocence coincidentally being the main worry of the Governess (as well a main literary theme of the book) and she goes to great lengths to protect them from such. Also prevalent throughout the novella is the theme of ambiguity and uncertainty. The Governess is constantly led, whether by maid staff or by her own introspection, to question if the apparitions she saw are real or just simply delusions generated by her psyche. The latter of which would hint at insanity. Another thing that contributes to the theme of ambiguity and uncertainty is the children’s seemingly perfect behavior and exceptional innocence. Accounts from the older child’s school contradict the general consensus of...
