Below there!’ When he heard a voice thus calling to him, he was standing at the door of his box, with a flag in his hand, furled round its short pole. One would have thought, considering the nature of the ground, that he could not have doubted from what quarter the voice came; but instead of looking up to where I stood on the top of the steep cutting nearly over his head, he turned himself about, and looked down the Line. There was something remarkable in his manner of doing so, though I could not have said for my life what. But I know it was remarkable enough to attract my notice, even though his figure was foreshortened and shadowed, down in the deep trench, and mine was high above him, so steeped in the glow of an angry sunset, that I had shaded my eyes with my hand before I saw him at all. ‘Halloa! Below!’ From looking down the Line, he turned himself about again, and, raising his eyes, saw my figure high above him. ‘Is there any path by which I can come down and speak to you?’ 2 of 97 Three Ghost Stories He looked up at me without replying, and I looked down at him without pressing him too soon with a repetition of my idle question. Just then there came a vague vibration in the...

...Rakiiya Hearst December 3, 2012 X155 Ghost Do Exist A ghost is generally understood to be the disembodied spirit or soul of a once-living person. I do believe ghost exist. I’ve had many experiences with ghosts and hearing others tell their experiences, just makes me believe even more. I also believe that ghosts are real because of the research me and my sister have been doing since I started believing. There was a time when I was a non-believer and didn’t think ghost existed. My youngest sister is so fascinated with ghosts and pseudoscience. We share rooms, so when she watches TV (SyFy and Paranormal shows/movies) I have no choice but to watch it. That’s how I became a believer. It’s almost as if once you watch it or read about ghosts, you start having thoughts and strange things began happening. I start seeing things out the corner of my eye or even hearing the floor creak when I was home alone and there was no wind blowing (when it’s windy outside sometimes the wood on my house will creak). Most people believe that’s your mind playing tricks on you. But I believe that once you start believing in ghost then they’ll try to reach out to you and get your attention. One time, I was at home with my friend and I left my phone upstairs, on the bathroom sink. I was actually getting ready to flat iron my hair, but I went downstairs with my friend to keep her company while the curlers was heating up. We were sitting on the couch watching Punk’d on MTV. All of a sudden, we...

...The Turn of the Screw-The Ghost Chapters 3, 4, and 5 1. Describe everything about the ghost sighting on page 28. Interpret the sighting in several ways (is it real? Is it imagined?), supplying support for your suppositions. How does the sighting reflect upon the characters involved (supply evidence) Use actual quotes from the text and cite them in your analysis. “He did stand there!- but high up , beyond the lawn and at the very top of the tower to which, on that first morning, little flora had conducted me.”(p.27) This shows evidence that it possibly is a ghost by the absurdity that he could be standing on one of the tallest points on the property. This also brings the first supernatural element to the story that can be supported. However she has no concrete evidence that it is a ghost because she is relying on her vision as evidence. “An unknown man in a lonely place is a permitted object of fear to a young woman…”(p.28) This possibly means her mind could be playing tricks on her. She says its normal for woman under her circumstances to fear certain situations such as a “unknown man” and she could be seeing things. 2. Describe everything about the ghost sighting on page 34. Interpret the sighting in several ways (is it real? Is it imagined?), supplying support for your suppositions. How does the sighting reflect upon the characters involved (supply evidence) Use actual quotes from the text and cite them in your analysis. “He remained but a few seconds-long...

...Have you ever heard strange creaks or noises when you are alone in your own home? Have lights flickered on or off without anyone touching the switch? Perhaps you felt cold air in a certain spot even though your windows are tightly shut, or your pet suddenly starts barking for no apparent reason. If any of these things have happened to you, then you may have experienced paranormal activity. Or how many times growing up did someone tell you that ghosts are not real? Since the beginning of time, Whether or not ghosts actually exist is a debatable question in almost every culture and region around the world. Only a few people who believe in ghosts are able to point out countless instances of unexplained phenomena in which strange sightings and paranormal happenings have taken place. On the other hand, majority of the people are skeptics because they do not believe that there is anything beyond the natural world and they also dismiss such suggestions that “ghosts” are illusions of human imagination that have no scientific basis or proof. This paper explores the question: whether or not do ghosts really exist? Define ghosts and paranormal phenomena I am a believer of paranormal phenomena; there have always been superstitions about the paranormal. People who did believe in ghosts have tried to prove the skeptics wrong that there are things that we cannot see with our own eyes. Because of this, capturing paranormal phenomena, visiting actual haunted places, and discussing how...

...woman, is a very popular folk tale in the Spanish-American community. It has been passed down from generation to generation as a precautionary tale. Growing up in a predominately Mexican community, La Llorana is the most popular folk tale ever. It has been portrayed in paintings, movies, books, etc. This story has been used to scare children from going out late at night and to prevent them from doing anything they are not supposed to be doing. My first-hand experiences are few to none on this story, but I have been told stories by my parents and grandparents. As a child, I was told the story of La Llorana from a very early age. My mom first told me the story around my teenage years when I began to go out later at night. She always...

...Hamlet Journal (1) Act 1, Scene 5, line 32 Ghost: I find thee apt, And duller shouldst thou be than the fat weed That roots itself in ease on Lethe wharf, Wouldst thou not stir in this. Now, Hamlet, hear. 'Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark Is by a forgèd process of my death Rankly abused. But know, thou noble youth, The serpent that did sting thy father’s life Now wears his crown. (2) Paraphrase: a. The ghost is glad that Hamlet is so excited about revenging the father’s death. The ghost explained how his death was meant to look and that his death was a lie. Then the ghost informed Hamlet who was responsible for his death. Hamlet’s uncle is the one who murdered his father. (3) My comments b. I think that this is the start of the book; before this the book was just getting you use to the characters. When the ghost appears to Hamlet he is eager to get revenge for his father’s death. But when the ghost tells Hamlet that his uncle is the one who kills him; I feel like when this is revealed it took the story to a new level. First your father just died, your mom married your uncle and now all of a sudden a ghost appears to tell you that his death was a lie. On top of it being a lie, the person who did it was your uncle. I think this is going to make Hamlet lose control over him. He will either go into a deep depression or he is going to be so angry and not be able to control himself...

...When we had an world to survive from because what we're in now. This thing worse than death itself. They always find us. They always know where we are, somehow. There were a few stories about a creature called a zombie. Zombies, they have one fatal flaw they die. If this was a case of zombies. It would have only lasted two or three weeks. Firstly, these creatures, they don't decay, so they don't die out naturally. Secondly, they can run as fast as an average human and thirdly, as I said before they can't be killed. I like to call them ghosts since ghosts can't be harmed. Everyone I have met with as a different name for them. Ghosts usually look like very pale scratched up humans with a bloody mess of a fungus infused back of their head. You...

Ghosts of the Stanley Hotel If you where staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado and turned to channel 42 of your guest-room television, you would be watching one of my all-time favorite movies: The Shining. Doesn’t matter what time of day or night, or year for that matter, it is always on. That’s not supernatural, of course- merely a nod to their role as the inspiration for Stephen King’s novel. Employees report hearing the commotion of a great party in the grand ballroom when there is no one there. Children can be heard playing in the halls when there are no children at all, and many guests have reported seeing ghostly figures in their rooms at night, merely standing, watching. The fourth floor seems to be host to the most amount of activity, and there is one ghost in particular, purportedly Lord Dunraven, the previous owner of the land the property was built on, who can be seen standing over the bed or looking out the window of room 407. He is widely blamed for any jewelry or valuables that have gone missing in the hotel over the years...

...Legend of Monsters Urbans legends have been around for hundred of years. The three main in particular have stood out to me is. The lady in white dress, La Llorona, and Bloody Mary. I heard stories about “The lady in the white dress” but I never believed that she killed herself. The most common story behind this legend is that of a women being betrayed by a husband or fiance and then her own life (Duranti, Krista “The legend of the women in white”. People who claim to have seen her, say she only appears at night near rivers or lakes in Mexico (Duranti, Krista “The legend of the women in white”. I heard a sound that night then it stop but it did it again so I check what was going on I look outside I see the lady in white just staring at me and waving she looks at me evil like I did something, my dad was calling me making sure I was okay, but I look back outside she was gone. I was scared for my life the next day I was telling people in my class I saw the lady in white outside my house but they didn’t believe me. That was the only night I saw her....

...knowledge, b/c they shaped my thoughts, experiences, education and life decisions. I have found that human nature leads to make the decisions in our lives whether it is good or bad. Whether you follow the rules of others or us. My 2nd marriage with an older man, who loves all of our kids and me. The first guy I was married to he was unkind man. After we got married he would beat and cheat on me. I have find that all of the people I have studied in this course where all kind of one sided. Where I eye don’t like to say any of the other worldviews are wrong even if some of it I may or may not understand. The education and life decisions I have are 2 years tech school for health care, and all grades k-12. My life decisions have never always been good but they have never been ones that would get me killed or put in jail, like the time when I was 4 and I took some gum from the store after my dad told me no then he whipped me all the way home and back to the store . Ultimate reality is something I have always liked looking into watching things about ghosts and other things that go bump in the night. Now you must know that when I say ultimate reality yes, god can be put into those terms for the fact that no one has really ever seen him. But that’s not what I mean for I know god is here and everywhere around, and he is good, b/c how would we all be here if he wasn’t. What I mean by this is ghosts and demons. Yes god is good but I believe that all souls not our bodies for they died...

...Whether or not Wuthering Heights is a love story has been one of the most popular debates. In contrast to what others may belief, Wuthering Heights is indeed a love story. It may not be the usual happy ending love story; however, it is one with a dysfunctional love. The love between Heathcliff and Catherine was intervened by pride and ego. Although the characters expressed their love for each other various times, it is them who deprived themselves from happiness. The novel well interprets the the dysfunctional love of the characters, giving it an ultimate twist to the love story. Towards the beginning of the novel, Lockwood’s unexpected stay at Wuthering Heights triggers an emotional breakdown in Heathcliff. During the night of his stay,...

...In this world, there are many strange things that can be too much for the human eye. We wonder in our heads why and how do these happen and demand for an explanation. The experience of paranormal phenomena has been a source of curiosity for as long as man has existed. Stories of ghosts, demons, and mythical beasts are filled through American folklore and are based on facts. Even though it is hard to explain the unnatural and look for a logical explanation, science just simply cannot explain why and how these things happen. In the article, “Do Paranormal Even Exist“, even Dr. Josephson concedes, “It would have to be something we have not identified in physical experiments. I think if we can get some sort of model, then people then may start...

...tell you. In China your father had a sister who killed herself. She jumped into the family well. We say that your father has all brothers because it is as if she had never been born. "In 1924 just a few days after our village celebrated seventeen hurry-up weddings-to make sure that every young man who went 'out on the road' would responsibly come home-your father and his brothers and your grandfather and his brothers and your aunt's new husband sailed for America, the Gold Mountain. It was your grandfather's last trip. Those lucky enough to get contracts waved goodbye from the decks. They fed and guarded the stowaways and helped them ofT in Cuba, New York, Bali, Hawaii. 'We'll meet in California next year,' they said. All of them sent money home. "I remember looking at your aunt one day when she and I were dressing; 1 had not noticed before that she had such a protruding melon of a stomach. But I did not think, 'She's pregnant,' until she began to look like other pregnant women, her shirt pulling and the white tops of her black pants showing. She could not have been pregnant, you see, because her husband had been gone for years. No one said anything. We did not discuss it. In early summer she was ready to have the child, long after the time when it could have been possible. "The village had also been counting. On the night the baby was to be born the villagers raided our house. Some were crying. Like a great saw, teeth strung with lights, files of people walked zigzag...

...story of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens drew us in and gave us many of the character types and themes that we have today. In this classical story, the reader follows the life of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future as the ghosts try to cure Scrooge’s greedy nature. The modern story that uses the elements in A Christmas Carol is How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. In this modern work, the reader follows The Grinch, a crabby old creature who tries to steal the Who’s christmas spirit and happiness. A Christmas Carol has become such an influential work that modern authors still draw upon the character types, conflicts, and themes found in Dickens’ traditional story. Firstly, there are the character types that are shared between A Christmas Carol and The Grinch. Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas Present are at Fred’s Christmas party. Fred and his guests are talking about Scrooge. “‘I am sorry for him; I couldn’t be angry with him if I tried. Who suffers by his ill...

...country in Eastern Asia with come a culture deeply connected with China. The people in my country are mostly Han Chinese who came from mainland China before 1949 or have ancestors that were. They are divided into three group based on the Chinese dialect they speak: Taiwanese, Hakka, or Mandarin. The traditional values that we have are based on Confucian ethics which are now challenging to industrialization. However, some traditional values remain strong, including piety toward parents, ancestor worship, a strong emphasis on education and work, and the importance of saving face. And these are also my values, beliefs and practices. I was born and raised in Taiwan which is Home Island. I consider myself Taiwanese no matter where I live because I am descendant from a long line of Taiwanese who came from a small village in Kaohsiung city. I know that China prefers to view Taiwan as an inherent part of China going back to “ancient time” and China wants to claim sovereignty over Taiwan. I do not consider myself to have a shared Chinese identity because I am one hundred percent Taiwanese. The communication styles of Taiwanese are in front of words, gestures and facial expression. Mandarin, the official national language of Taiwan is my main language. It has allowed me to share my way of life with others and allows me to connect with my culture, roots to my ancestors and to my cultural histories. People in Taiwan are very indirect in their communication and are concerned with...
