...Pink for girls; Blue for boys? Nowadays if we walk into a department store we can be sure that we will find pink and some blue clothes, toys and little other objects for children such as books, bikes, lunchboxes, board games, toy cookers, cash registers, even games consoles. If we look at these objects there is no wonder everybody knows that pink is specified for girls and blue for boys. But how did this become a common thought? Since when do we use colors to make a difference between genders? And why exactly did we choose pink and blue to fulfill this role? In the 1800s most infants were dressed in white and both boys and girls wore dresses or short skirts until the age of five or six. Although, there was a few small difference between boy and girl clothing. For example girls wore dresses which were buttoned up in the back while boys’ dresses were buttoned up in the front. So gender difference wasn’t highlighted just in a little scale. Why wasn’t this important in that age of time? One theory is that distinguishing boys from girls was less important than distinguishing kids from adults. Childhood was a time of innocence while adulthood typically meant working hard. By the 1850s other colors than white had started to appear in baby clothing, but gender-based distinctions were slow to emerge. For example a Times fashion report from 1880 says that boys and girls were dressed alike in shades of blue, pink, white or violet; another report from 1892 says young girls were wearing...

...The essay I chose to summarize is Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl’s Habits by Suki Kim. Suki Kim describes how life was different when she moved from Korea to America. She also pointed out how the differently American culture was from her own. Such as when she was in school in Korea they bowed at the teacher every chance they got, but not in America. Based on her Korean culture she felt that it was disrespectful the way America ran their schools with no respect for the teacher. Suki describes how when she was in ESOL, and sadly none of the fellow Korean students had anything in common with her. It did not take long for Suki to discover that most of the Koreans that lived in New York with a decent amount of wealth lived in West Chester or Manhattan. Obviously she didn’t get along with the lower class Koreans because that was not how she grew up in her country. I believe the purpose of this paper was to make other cultures aware of how things are different in every country. Also I believe this was healing and closure for the pain she felt from being rich, then unexpectedly poor and moving to a new country. The audience behind this story was the general public I felt because she wanted to make others aware of how quick life can change. We live in a country where we are used to things being a certain way, but this story can teach so many life lessons. Businesses can be successful and producing great revenue, but tomorrow can go bankrupt we have seen this in with our economy...

There were 945 girls per 1000 boys in 1991, 927 in 2001 and only 914 in 2011. India’s increasing number of rich class seems to have increased the practice of sex selection in the new technology promoted by private health sector. The new technology has aggravated the social problem of bias against girl child and continues to have caused the drastic reduction in the proportion of female children. This article focuses on appeal to government and civil society for immediate action to eliminate sex selection. The article accounts a lesson sharing experience for effective public policy responses to crisis similarly faced in the country. ...For Girls. It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect, Too: Pressure on Young Women For young women today there seems to be enormous pressure to be beyond perfect. Why as a society do we place these kinds of pressures on our children? A good example is the story “For Girls, It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect, Too” by Sara Rimer. It focuses on two amazing teen girls Esther and Colby who have to face many issues that many young women today have to confront now as well as the stress it entails. Esther and Colby learn right from the start that they have to be perfect during every waking hour and not waste anytime. The girl’s lives are influenced by their parent’s desires and the opinions of their peers. They don’t even think of themselves. Today’s amazing girls are facing pressure from their parents, as well as images they see on T.V., in magazines, as well as everywhere they look. Society pressures young women to be smart, sexy, and athletic. Sara Rimer writes; “If you are free to be everything, you are also expected to be everything” (page 2). At one time young women were viewed as the lesser sex; and were expected to become obedient wives and good mothers. They weren’t expected to go to or even complete their schooling. It was viewed as a waste of time. As time passed women started to become able to receive an education, vote, and have a job outside of the home. Society then started expecting more out of young women. The young women today have to become the amazing girl’s...

...Summary of Farm Girl Anderson Jude ENG 115 Professor Chris Swindell Strayer University October 23rd, 2013 The short story Farm Girl is an in depth look at life through the eyes of a young girl growing up with her family on a farm. Throughout this non-fiction story the author Jessica Hemauer, does an amazing job of describing her surroundings to pull the reader in and make them feel like they are there with her. She begins as a younger girl describing how difficult it is for a child to awake from a deep slumber, and immediately get to work doing jobs some grown men would cringe at. “Cleaning out various huts and pens and laying down fresh straw are part of our daily duties” (Hemauer, 2011 p. 84). She continues by explaining how this is the worst of the jobs she and her siblings endure, and how the dust makes it difficult for them to breathe, but they all know there is no use in complaining because it has to be done (Hemauer, 2011). She continues her story into her teenage years describing vividly the life and struggles of a teenage girl, especially one with so many responsibilities and restrictions. While in eighth grade she describes to the reader how unusual her life is in comparison to her classmates, and how she dislikes not being able to participate in extracurricular activities. However, she finally does get the chance to be normal as she defines it. “In eighth grade I really want to play basketball, and after begging and pleading with my parents, they finally say...

...the reader a metaphor “ragged diamond.” The use of the word ragged to describe the glass suggests something broken or torn. The second image is of “a young man and his girl falling backwards into a shop-window.” This is written in the present tense. The reason for this is to create a sense of immediacy. This gives the reader a sense of almost being a witness to this event. The next image in the poem is a violent one “The young man’s face is bristling with fragments of glass” it is as if the man has a beard made of glass. The use of the word “bristling” shows us that the man has fragments of glass puncturing his face. The reader is then left to wonder how the glass came to be stuck to his face. The comparison with a beard is deliberately ironic and shocking. “and the girl’s leg has caught on the broken window” The poet’s choice of words is very important here. “Caught” suggests something that has trapped the girls leg is trapped by the shattered plate glass and she is probably seriously injured. The poet draws even more attention to the violent detail, “And spurts arterial blood over her wet-look white coat. The poet used both sound imagery “spurts”, and visual imagery. The implication of the bloods colour is suggested by the word arterial. Clearly an artery has been cut which puts the girl in grave danger. “ This contrast with the white coat again drawing attention the blood. The poet also uses image of helplessness “Their arms are star fished out braced...

...Academic Writing Workshop Cofer - The Myth of the Latin Woman: I just met a girl named Maria March 4, 2009 As Judith Ortiz Cofer says in her essay “mixed cultural signals have perpetuated certain stereotypes” (49). Since something can be natural in a determined culture and offensive in another, it is easy to find a variety of behaves that are misunderstood. This misunderstood is what promotes the existence of prejudice. The stereotypes should be ignored and forgotten by people. Each individual should be judge by its work and personality, and not by its clothes, physical appearance or place of origin. People should know better about distinct culture before believe in stereotypes. As a Brazilian woman (and therefore Latina).I can talk about the stereotype created about women from my country. Brazil is known for its soccer team, carnival, and beautiful women. It seems nice characteristic to be identified with. Although, those characteristics make people believe that in Brazil the women are always or at least most of the time naked. Brazilian girls are believed to be easy ones, because they kiss in the mouth on the first date. In some countries (as the ones in Europe) people also believe the Brazilian women that move to there are all prostitutes. Those and much more related kind of stereotypes make the Brazilian women to endure a lot prejudice not only as a Latin but also as a Brazilian. It is very sad to know that people are so influenceable but that is how it is. And it is...

...young love. Updike allows reader’s to see through the eyes of a teenager in his story “A&P”. The story begins with Sammy, a young clerk who becomes fascinated with the arrival of three girls in his store. The girl that grabs his attention the most is Queenie, by carefully observing her walk through the aisles and talk to her friends, he goes through a tremendous change in his character. At first, Updike shows us the immature side of Sammy, he quotes “The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece…where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the backs of her legs” (pg. 835), this shows the reader that Sammy is immature concentrating on the girls instead of doing his job. However, as we go further into the story, his somewhat obsession for Queenie leads him to question his own life. His feelings become so powerful that he forms his own conclusions about Queenie and her life and wonders if he could be part of that life too. When the girls finally approach the register, they are embarrassed by Lengel. This angers Sammy and causes him to change from an immature teenager to a person who takes a stand for what he believes is wrong. Queenie was the catalyst in Sammy’s journey to maturity. After Sammy quits, he makes his way into the parking lot only to realize the girls are long gone. "His face was dark gray and his back stiff, as if he's just had an injection of iron, and my stomach kind of felt how hard the world was going to be to me...

...The current emphasis on excessive thinness for women is one of the clearest examples of advertisings power to influence us. Both culturally and individually. Now I’m certainly not saying that advertising is solely to be blamed for all of these. These stereotypes exist in every aspects of our lifes but there’s no aspect more pervasive or more persuasive than advertising. Research indicates that self esteem of girls in America plummets when they reach adolescence. This doesn’t happen to boys but it does to girls. Girls tend to feel fine about themselves when they are 8, 9, 10yo. But they reach adolescence and they hit a wall. And at least part of that wall seems to be this relentless emphasis on physical perfection that starts so early for girls. You cannot diet yourself to achieve the “acceptable” body type. Ladies Home Journal Issue: What are being sold here are the readers of the ladies Home Journal who are made to feel anxious about their weight and they are being sold to the diet industry. Obsession with thinness is used not only to sell diet products but also cigarettes. Educating that they should smoke instead of eat -> a way to avoid gain weight. Business of getting children addicted to nicotine to replace thousands of people who died. Images in advertising affect the reality of our lives. There is a tremendous amount of contempt for women who don’t measure up to the advertisers’ ideal of beauty. This is particularly true for women who are overweight. Media images...

...Total Girl magazine. As I read through the pages of the magazine, I accidentally came across with a very beautiful page. This beautiful page was something like a job opportunity page. It informed me that the Total Girl staffs are looking for girls who have the passion and capabilities to be part of the Jr. Tg Team. Jr. Tg Team is actually like a mini version of the Total Girl staffs. As an avid fan of total girl, becoming a part of the Jr. Tg Team has always been my dream. At first, I was really hesitant to apply for the Jr. Tg Team because I admit I didn’t believe in myself before. I didn’t believe that I have a talent that is worthy to be flaunted and shared. I also thought that if I join, my efforts would be just a waste since I know there are other girls who are way better than me and that I will never have the chance to be chosen. Several days have passed and I taught about it again. I don’t know why but I suddenly decided to join the search for Jr. Tg Team and apply for Art Director. I opened my laptop and started making my essay and artworks for my application. When I already completed my application requirements, I immediately submitted them through e-mail. After I had submitted my application, I taught about it again and told myself not to expect too much and that I should expect for something worse, which is not getting a call for an interview by March 26,2011. The 26th day of March came and I was so dazed when I received a call from Ate Denise of total girl. She told...

...ENGL 103.G35 Cultural Analysis Cover Girl has always been a popular make-up company, and since they sell make-up, their main target is undoubtedly woman. In the new Cover Girl Nature Luxe commercial, they target women, especially in their teens, in multiple ways. They use a celebrity that is popular for that age group; she is wearing glamorous, sparkly dresses, she’s dancing nonstop and having fun, and they try to make the audience “join the movement.” Figure 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMt6TFO0zn4 Figure 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMt6TFO0zn4 The advertisement starts out right away with the popular music artist Taylor Swift as the only person in the entire commercial. The company makes a big emphasis on this and even puts her name in the commercial underneath the company name, seen in Figure 1, as if to highlight the fact that she’s in the commercial and wearing their product, even though it’s very clear who it is to the majority of the population. Cover Girl chose Taylor Swift to be the star of their commercial for a few reasons. They are targeting teenage girls, and Taylor is in that age range herself. She’s also extremely successful in her career and is an attractive young woman that a lot of girls wish they could look like or just be. By using Taylor Swift when she has all these qualities, it sends out a message to the watchers that if you use their product, you’ll be able to be like Taylor Swift. ...The Store The store that I performed my research on was Big Lots. It has a boy and girl’s aisle as well as a baby aisle that has a very small section of semi-neutral toys. In the girls aisle I found dress-up (Disney princess, monster high and some tutu’s, as well as some generic dress up items), kitchen (pots, pans, aprons and cooking items), baby dolls, and Barbie dolls. All of the packaging for the girls’ toys had very little red, with some white, and yellow, as well as different shades of blue and green but nothing within the dark scale of these colors. Some had black but very little. The majority of the colors were found to be different shades of purple, and pink. All the colors seemed to be themed towards fun and bright. The girls’ toys could all be categorized as either dress-up, playing kitchen or playing with pretend make-up. There were baby dolls that came with bottles and “fresh” diapers for changing. All the toys seemed to be stereotypical for a girl to learn what to do when she grew-up i.e. cooking, cleaning and taking care of a baby/children. Upon examining the isle containing “boys’ toys”, I encountered super heroes, building toys, play guns from pistol to long barrel riffles, different kinds of vehicles from sports cars to construction working trucks, as well as transformers and motorcycles. Career themed toys could also be found ranging from muscle men and law enforcement to firefighters. All of the packaging for the boy’s toys had some white, yellow...
