...Give by Simon Armitage Subject Give is about homelessness and the way in which society reacts to beggars. The poet has adopted the persona of a homeless person to challenge the reader directly, although initially there is some ambiguity about the speaker: in the first stanza the word "dear" suggests an intimate connection between the speaker and audience. Later it becomes clear that the speaker is creating a "scene" by asking for money. Structure and language Form and Structure The poem is regular in form, divided into five stanzas, each of two or three lines, with a strict eight-syllable count to form a strong metre. The first stanza is a rhyming couplet, which accentuates the strong rhythm. Armitage also uses repeated structures in this poem: the third stanza, for example, has three parallel lines introduced by metals of increasing value. The drama of this parallelism peaks in the final stanza, which has four short sentences over two lines: You give me tea. That's big of you.I'm on my knees. I beg of you. The way the two lines mirror each other - to the extent that the last sentence of each is very nearly identical - juxtaposes the beggar and "you", letting the reader compare the two characters. This is also a rhyming couplet because the last words are the same. What could the structure be used for? Perhaps by following a strict structure and rhythm, Armitage is helping create a sense that the beggar is educated, possibly to surprise the reader. And is it significant that the...

...Imagine by John Lennon Joel F. Doan Martin Davis ENG-242 Tuesday, March 27, 2012 I have read and understand the plagiarism policy as outlined in the syllabus and the sections in the Student Catalog relating to the IWU Honesty/Cheating Policy. By affixing this statement to the title page of my paper, I certify that I have not cheated or plagiarized in the process of completing this assignment. If it is found that cheating and/or plagiarism did take place in the writing of this paper, I understand the possible consequences of the act/s, which could include expulsion from Indiana Wesleyan University. Imagine by John Lennon It was difficult for me to write about John Lennon's song, Imagine, and not about John himself, the Beatles, Liverpool, Yoko Ono, New York, his assassination, or anything else. This song, as conceived and as first recorded, is deceptively simple. It consists of a short intro on piano, two verses, a chorus, a third verse, and a repeat of the chorus, followed by a brief 'play out' which is more or less a recap of the intro, turned to close on the tonic chord. But the song has inner strength. The simplicity is indeed deceptive. There are subtleties in the structure and execution. Also, the lyric, though superficially platitudinous, never oversteps itself, and is in fact genuinely challenging to the open mind. Imagine is in the key of C Major, the simplest key in western music. The four bar intro is alternate bars of C (the tonic) and F (the subdominant)...

...“Mary! Come down!” I ran down to the kitchen and was immediately greeted by the smell of authentic Chinese food . My stomach was growling and all i wanted to do was to dive in. The table was filled with a variety of meat dishes, stir-fried vegetables, noodles, rice and desserts. I was about to devour them all but mom stopped me.“No..no…no. You have to wait.Today is very special day. Aunt Lily from China and Aunt Carrie from US will come visit us. Go back up and make yourself look nice.” I sighed and went back up. I picked out a white cocktail dress and put my hair into a braid. I put on a smokey eye, concealer, false lashes with some mascara, light pink blush and some lipstick. When i’m done, i grabbed my phone and headed back downstairs. “You look good. Aunt Lily and Aunt Carrie here already. Go greet her,” mom said. The dining room was filled. The right side of the table was occupied by Aunt Lily’s family. She had 3 kids and 2 of them were twins. The other side of the room was occupied by Aunt Carrie and her husband. I walked and sat next to her. “You’ve grown up so much! It’s so nice to finally see you again!,” Aunt Carrie said cheerfully. “Nice to see you too,” i said. I hugged her and then turned my face to Aunt Lily. She was trying to put her youngest son to sleep. “Hi Aunt Lily!” “Ah! Mary! Very pretty, very pretty.你现在怎么样了?” (how have you been?) “I’m doing good. What about you?” “我很好” (i’m good) It had been 4 years since i last saw the both of them. Aunt Carrie...

...the early sixties prompted others to be written and from the second half of the decade on there was a full efflorescene of such topical songs written by young people for their peers. Many of these songs are referred to as protest songs. During this time, many American citizens chose to clearly denounce the United State’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Artists such as Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Buffalo Springfield addressed their views through their music as a surefire way to raise awareness and bring people together. It is argued that the so-called antiwar anthem of this time was a song titled, “Give Peace a Chance” by John Lennon and I couldn’t agree more. An ideal protest song that is still loved and shared today, Time Magazine even recognized the song in 2011 as one of the top ten protest songs of all-time To me, the musical setting of “Give Peace A Chance” is the first and most influential aspect while interpreting the song. In an online Time Magazine Photos article, it explains the song’s celebrated story. On March 25, 1969, five days after the wedding of John Lennon and...

...us are here in pursuit of our dreams in life but some of us may give up when the going gets tough and the challenges seem impossible, but faith in our hearts is the fuel that will propel us through the challenges we face in life prior to realizing our dreams. According to Helen Steiner Rice a well-known poet, faith is a force that is greater than knowledge or power or skill and many defeats turn to triumph if you trust in God’s wisdom and will. On the journey towards our dreams the road may be tough and many of us will be faced with many tasks more than we can bear; challenges like working to support ourselves, raising children in addition to the course workloads may be very daunting and impossible and many may give up their dreams. But always remember the hills ahead are never as steep as they seem and with faith in our hearts and believe in ourselves we can climb until we reach our dreams. I remembered when my husband was preparing for pharmacy school he was a fulltime student, working for 12 hours a day, taking care of the household expenses, and he barely got 5 hours of sleep a day but despite the challenges he never gave up his dream of becoming a pharmacist. He was relentless in his pursuit of his dream through believe in himself and faith in God; and now he is a practicing pharmacist. As many of us are pursuing our dreams we may be confronted with many challenges, which may abort our dreams if we give up, but see challenges as opportunities in disguise. Remember...

...In 2013 Robin Thicke released a music album named “Blurred Lines” it contained a song with the same name. The Song ‘Blurred Lines” became the number one song on the music billboard 200. The song became a sensation all over the world and it earned Robin Thicke millions of dollars. The musician and his producer Pharrell Williams were riding on a cloud of success until they were accused of committing copyright infringement. The family of a legendary musician started the process of suing Thicke and Williams claiming that the money making song was based off of a song that was released by Marvin Gaye in 1977 named “Got to Give it Up”. The Gaye family claimed that Thicke and Williams committed copyright infringement because the “Blurred Lines” song had too many similarities in the hook, keyboard-bass interplay, lyrics and theme of the song. The legal concept that comes in to play here is copyright infringement. The song at questioned broke the law because it had likeness of another song and that Thicke used the former song to make is million dollar song “Blurred Lines”. The musician Thicke stole the intellectual property of Marvin Gaye when he created the “Blurred Lines” song. In a business such as a record company they type of trouble can easily happen. Managers that work in fields where copyrights are attached to every product that the business releases should be have a plan in place to identify copyright infringement. Millions and millions of songs have been created and there is...

..."I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people." I truly am one of those people. I was born in 1993, thirteen years after John Lennon was murdered, but he has had an impact impacted me greatly on the way I choose to live my life. I decided at a young age to never conform to other people's views. My mother will not would not admit it, but she had a plan of how she wanted me to act and look around her friends. On the night of Halloween in 1995, my mother attempted to dress me in a Raggedy Anne costume. Instead of being forced into wearing something I had no interest in wearing, I threw a fit. I screamed and threw my fists until I got to wear what I wanted to, which was nothing but my birthday suit. From adolescence to the present I have tried my hardest to be an individual and keep away from stereotypes. I try to let people know that it is okay to be an individual by making a fool out of myself John Lennon sat in bed for a week to inspire peace and I went streaking through my camp to inspire individualism. I may not have made a worldwide impact, but when I explained to people why I had gone streaking, a few younger campers decided to be fearless and participate in the talent show. (This part is a bit jumpy. I understand you're trying to make a new point, but it doesn't flow too well)Friendship has always meant a great...

...Yoko Ono is an artist, singer, and peace activist. She is also known as the widow of John Lennon, a former member of the Beatles. Although being famous and successful, Ono had been shunned many times for different causes. These causes include her relationship with John Lennon, the peace demonstrations Ono and Lennon performed together, and the theory that Ono break up the Beatles. Yoko Ono and John Lennon first met on November 9, 1966, at Yoko Ono’s art exhibit. John Lennon was deeply moved by Ono’s art piece YES (“On This Day). After this meet, Ono and Lennon soon became a couple. At the time, John Lennon was still married to his first wife, Cynthia (Grant). Cynthia filed a divorce in August 1968, and Ono and Lennon got married on March 20, 1969 (Swanson). Lennon and Ono were both peace activists. On their honeymoon, just five days after their marriage, Ono and Lennon climbed in bed in room 902 and began their five day long bed-in, a demonstration derived from sit-in, which the couple just sit in bed and talk about peace. They did another bed-in later in Montreal. In between the bed-ins, Ono and Lennon held a “Baggism” press conference.Yoko and John explained that the purpose of this action is to remove all prejudices and achieve “total communication” (Bettmann). Lennon and Ono’s bed-in and “Baggism” demonstrations, however, was not taken seriously by the press. Some thought Lennon and Ono were going to have public sex on the bed. Other journalists call the two "public stunts"...

...It is easy to say something is hard to do if you never tried doing it. This saying hits home for me because there was a time I thought I could not play sports or thought that it would be a struggle because I had asthma. After beating myself up over not having the courage to try, my friends encouraged me to try out for basketball. When starting out it was a little hard to run and bounce the ball at the same time, it took even more energy and effort to shoot the ball. This did not help in keeping my spirit high. I felt defeated and stopped trying. While feeling bad about not being good right away I remembered what my mom told me “Everything does not come easy, you have to work for it”. This made me feel better and I practiced every day after school until I learned how to play the game. Now basketball is my favourite sport, if I had not tried it wouldn’t have been possible for me to brag about my accomplishments today. If you do not try to do something, you will never know if you are good at it. Confidence is the key when it comes to trying something new. Don’t be a failure by thinking you cannot do something or not even try. When making a mistake, try harder the next time and it will eventually become easy. You will be very happy and pleases with yourself when you try to do something and succeed. When attempting to do something put in the effort so you can be the best at it. I have learned that not trying is worst than trying and failing. I have so much...

...Never Give Up” There is no such thing as an ending Just a new beginning. I think this quote is awesome, and has a lot of meaning in my life. To me this quote literally mean, “never give up” when I say never I mean never God does everything for a reason. So I never complain neither do I ever give up. Basically everything good I do with school or education wise is because I choose to. I know what I want in life so that's what I'm going to fight for until I get it. I have a good parents but when it comes to supporting me education wise, I never really had that. I am at the age where as though I don't let that bother me, because I know “ in the end of my new beginning” I know they will be proud of me. I really don't have a support system, it's really only me supporting my self. I mean I have people that care but don't support me. I have my days when I just wanna break down & emotionally cry and give up because I feel so alone not having anybody support me. Until I jump back to reality and “never give up” no matter how hard or how difficulty it get I will always keep trying. You always have to go through lemons to get to lemonade is my Moto. I honesty feel as though I came to far to give up! I am a very good well matured teenager, I am 17 years of age, I have 2 jobs. I work at tropical smoothie café on broad Cecil b-Moore and checkers in southwest Philadelphia. I am currently...

...Adam Grant, the author of Give and Take, describes and compares the takers and the givers throughout his book. Takers do not maintain the relationships that do not benefit them, while the givers are willing to maintain all relationships. As stated by Grant, takers and givers are similar in a way that they both have large networks, but takers only approach networks to benefit themselves. Grant has provided a great example of how a taker approach relationships to profit himself. According to Give and Take, “If you wanted to get [Ken] Lay to attend a meeting, you need to invite someone important” (32). Like all other takers, Lay is a taker who likes to mingle with powerful people who are going to be useful for him. However, takers may be able to approach relationships but it is hard for them to maintain relationships because people tend to stay away from takers. For instance, one of my classmates in elementary school was a good faker, and she approached me to fulfil her needs. She got close to me because she wanted to eat lunch at my house. By the end of the school year, my mother found out that she is a taker because she was not willing to help me when I needed her help. This experience have taught me that...
