Revealing the truth about the worlds
Two different communities with the same problems. This is what it is like in the movie The Giver directed by Phillip Noyce, and Anthem written by Ayn Rand. In both the movie and the book both governments are very controlling and limit people's freedom. In Anthem and The Giver, both governments limit choices and information.
In both worlds the government's control what the people can know. In The Giver and Anthem the government controls what people know in their communities. Certain people in these communities know too much and are to curious about what the government is doing to them. In the book Anthem, Ayn Rand states “We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. …show more content…
The people of the community are not allowed to make any decisions by themselves, because the government makes the decisions for them. In Anthem, Ayn Rand points out “‘Dare not choose in your mind's the work you would like to do when you leave the home of the students. You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you” (22). This shows how they can't have any choice because the government tells them everything they have to do and they can't decide to do different and if they try to they will get punished. People aren’t allowed to choose their own job when they get out of school, the council pick the jobs for them. Similarly in the movie The Giver the government prevents them from having any Independence and making decisions as in Anthem. The government in the movie prevents them from making any decisions for themselves, this is because the government doesn't want them to have too much freedom and end up turning against them. An example of this that Phillip Noyce brings up is when Jonas and Fiona are being watched through the cameras in the park and Jonas wants to hug Fiona, but as soon as he touches her an announcement from the government comes on in the loudspeaker and says something like “citizens are reminded that it is impolite to touch other people that are outside your family unit”. This shows that the government watches over/controls them with the cameras and
