One of the most significant social consequences of the First Industrial Revolution was the increase in industrial production, bringing wealth and power to Great Britain. There was not any labor laws in place to regulate the industries. Businesses would hire children for labor. These children would work full-time in coal mines and factories as cheap and unskilled laborers. These working children did not have time for their education. Injuries in the work place and diseases and sicknesses were prevalent. If the children tried to speak up they would be punished. The working people wanted shorter working hours and higher pay. Business owners exploited workers to gain bigger profits; communist workers then stepped in as an attempt to protect the workers. The workers started to protest (Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia, 2002). The wealthy people were in favor of capitalism. The poor were in favor of communism, because they wanted equal wages. The wealthy had more power because of their wealth to stop communism (Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2002). Capitalism is an economic system in which trade, industry and the means of production are entirely for profit. Capitalism also believes that no employee or worker is important and can be replaced at anytime. Communism is an economic system that believes all people are equal and should have equal wages. Communism believes that as the development of the productive forces end scarcity, goods and services are made available on the basis of free access, resulting in the disappearance of social class and money(Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2002).
