...people. They are public services, common defences, Rule of Law, Economic System, and protect rights. I graded them on how the Romans did. In Rome Their is a lot of public services for men and women. Some of these are unfair through. If you are a women and you wanted to bath you would have to schedule a time and work hard to get a bath. If you were a man you would have a time always after work when you needed one. In Rome the aqueducts supplied fresh water to the Romans. Everyone got fresh water and it was fair and a great Idea. The roads were open to everyone. It help people get to their destination quickly. Overall the Roman Republic did a good job but, I gave them a B for being unfair to women. In Rome gladiators would dress up and fight till one of them died. Gladiators did not have many rights. All they did until they died was fight. As Mr.Lafley said they were like human toys. These people did not want to do this. They were chosen from slaves and prisoners. The next type of people where slaves. They had no rights. Slaves would be sold and then they would have to...

Roman Gladiator Research Paper

...Roman Gladiators Long ago, in the Roman Empire, there were people called gladiators. Gladiators were slaves, criminals, and volunteers who fight each other to the death for entertainment. Roman gladiators were mostly men, sometimes there were female gladiators. They trained very hard to fight in the arena. Roman gladiators trained for arena fights by getting in very good physical shape, learning how to die, and learning how to use weapons. To be able to do anything, Roman gladiators had to be in really good physical shape. How did they get in this amazing shape? The first thing new gladiators did when they got to training camp is go through a inspection to see if they were able to train and fight. Research suggests that gladiator trainers kept their students on a largely vegetarian diet. Also, the first thing the trainers taught their gladiators was how to fight without a weapons to gain muscle in their body. Gladiators even trained with weapons two time as heavy as the real weapon to build up their upper body and core. Gladiators also had to learn how to die bravely. They also, had to learn how to die gracefully and with honor. Showing no fear when dying was a big part in learning how to die. Spectators of this sport fully expected these gladiators to die...

Slavery in Ancient Rome

...Slavery in Ancient Rome Rome as far research show had always exploited slaves, however during the early Republic Rome saw its slave population multiply significantly from a series of wars and conquests. This paper will discuss the rights and responsibilities of Roman slaves during the Republican era and early empire. It will also analyze the impact slavery had on Rome’s economic situation as well the impact on roman society and culture. Rome did not always have such an abundance of slaves. It was not until they conquered Corinth and sacked Carthage did they amass a significant amount of slaves. Some authors estimate that the number of slaves reached 300 000-350 000 in a total population of 900 000- 950 000 in Rome during the Augustan era.[1] It is of course impossible to determine the exact amount of slaves during this time, but nevertheless this estimate of slaves is still one third of the population. The Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage mark the beginning of Rome’s “addiction” to slavery. After Rome had consolidated the main land of what is now Italy, this brought them into contact with much greater powers. The first Punic War (264-241 B.C) began when both Rome and Carthage took interest in Sicily.[2] Herodotus notes the significance of this first of many battles by comparing it to the battle of Salamis. He states, “They say too, that the victory of Gelo and Thero in Sicily over Hamilcar the Carthaginians tell out upon the very day that the Hellenes...

...PED use in Athletics Performance enhancing drugs have been used by athletes for decades. In ancient Greece, some of the earliest Olympians used substances in an attempt to gain a competitive advantage. The drugs that they would use would either be plant seeds or extracts of mushrooms. Later in Rome, gladiators were known to have turned to drugs. The gladiators would dope for many different reasons, from dulling pain to creating a bloodier spectacle for viewers. In professional baseball, players like Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi were called in front of Congress to discuss steroid use in baseball for two weeks. Congress insisted that steroids were ruining the sport and needed to be banned when, in reality, reported revenues were vastly increased during the steroid era. Congress also preached about a level playing field, but the New York Yankees have a payroll three times that of average teams so how fair can the league really be without a salary cap. This research paper is not on the fairness of baseball though; it is about why a person would choose to do PEDs and how it affects society. Looking at some of the influences presented; it is shown that winning is a major force, a motive and drive; going deeper into winning we conclude that money is one of the major rewards for winning. These are seen as endorsements, contracts, and advertisement opportunities that are very profitable and also sponsor individual players and teams in sports. These revenues influence and encourage individuals...

...Europe, Australia and also the United States, and was considered to be very successful with their trading strategies. An excerpt from an article in the CRS Report for Congress entitled The Enron Collapse: An Overview of Financial Issues, Mark Jickling, (February 4, 2002), states that “the firm was widely regarded as one of the most innovative, fast growing, and best managed businesses in the United States.” However, despite all of Enron’s fame and glory, the company crumbled as a result of bad management and unethical practices. According to Donaldson & Werhane (2008), “The controls as designed were not rigorous enough and their implication and oversight was inadequate at both Management and Board levels,” (p. 313). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Enron Collapse and explain how the virtuous manager would have responded to working for Enron. Also being discussed is what the virtuous manager is expected to do if confronted with these decisions. Unfolding of Events During the period 1999 and thereafter, Enron created several special purpose vehicles which later resulted in the transfer of approximately 25 billion dollars in company debt. The company also diversified into many other businesses. However, the company later declared bankruptcy as a result of fiduciary failure, high-risk accounting practices, extensive undisclosed activities,...

Media Influence on African American Males

...Media Influence on African American Males Keana Noyd California State University, Northridge PAS 325- The Black Male in Contemporary Times May 12, 2014 Abstract If a black man is mentioned in the news, newspaper, magazine ads, television shows, or internet blogs, it is usually related to a negative, stereotypical thought of black men as a whole. The media constantly produces images of black men as sexually-instable, violent, and unintelligent. Such portrayals ultimately influence the nation when it comes to what black men are thought to be like. If the media gave honest and positive portrayals of black men, less racism would exist because people would be able to see the black men of this world for who they really are. In this paper, I give examples of how black men are negatively portrayed in the media and suggest how such misrepresentation can be stopped; by positive portrayals of black men in the media. Over the decades, the media has become an extremely influential power tool when it comes to making assertions about certain groups of people. African-Americans are one of the media’s many victims of false generalizations that influence the world beyond the television screens. Black men are constantly depicted as sexually-instable, angry, uneducated criminals throughout the media, in which, has an ultimate effect on how these men are represented throughout this society. Such depictions are one of the reasons why racism and stereotypical beliefs continue to exist throughout...

College Athletes and Compensation

...Assignment Five College Athletes and Compensation Professor Adam Lawrence Strayer University June 9, 2013 PART I: PROBLEM The goal of this paper is to focus on evidence that college athletes, specifically, football players should be compensated for the talents they demonstrate on the field; for many reasons. It is well documented that college presidents, coaches, athletic directors often think of athletics as the “front porch” of their campuses (Weaver, 2011), as it relates to college revenues. Weaver further maintains that college athletes, especially football players, are needed to generate the revenues to build both and support a winning football team, and athletics department. And historically colleges rely on ticket sales, game programs, and advertising revenues, to do so. Additionally, coaches’ salary and facility renovations also are factor in terms of colleges and universities needing to generate revenues as well. But before the former can be brought to fruition colleges must first persuade the most talented athletes to their school. What criteria do colleges and universities utilize when recruiting athletes with regard to talent, academics, finances, and student population? Additionally, what perks are colleges and universities offering these athletes to entice them at a minimum to the said front porch? Let’s start by first exploring how colleges and universities generate revenues. First, warning sign (problem) is that billions in annual revenues...
