...1/29/2012 Case Study: A Laid-off Glass Worker Issue in the case Ronald Petrie was laid off from the company on March 20, 1997 and from the beginning of May that year, the remaining employees of the Glass department were made to work over-time and at the same time; a few other employees from different departments were transferred to the Glass department. The Union’s contention is that the management was wrong in not making a recall for Petrie when it realized in the beginning of May that there can be an opening for a job in the Glass department, while the management argues that it is their right to decide whether the opening was required or not. The issue in the case is whether the management has violated the labor agreement by discharging Petrie and then putting other Glass department workers on overtime and transferring people from other classifications to this department, and not considering making a recall to Petrie for this duration of time. Union’s position The union’s position can be described as follows: (1) the labor agreement clearly tells that if employees are laid-off from work as a result of reduction in workforce, and an opening occurs in the classification they were working for, then they will be recalled to that classification in order of seniority provided the concerned employee is physically able to return to work and perform in a satisfactory manner, (2) looking at the overtime and temporary transfer hours worked for the Glass department, it becomes clear that...

...second chapter. In this example, a young hoodlum heaves a brick through the window of a baker’s shop. The crowd that gathers around the broken glass reminds the baker that the misfortune has a bright side since it will make business for a glazier. If a new glass window costs $250 then the glazier will have $250 more to spend with other merchants, and they will have $250 more to spend and so on. While this vandalism will mean more business for some glazier, the shopkeeper will be out $250 that he was planning to spend on a new suit. Since he has had to replace the window, he will have to go without the suit. Instead of having a window and $250, he only has a window. Consequently, the glazier’s gain of business is the tailor’s loss of business. No new employment has been added. A new window will be seen in the next day or two. But the suit will not because it will not be made. This fallacy can be related to a modern-day situation. When a city decides to employ its city workers or a construction firm to rebuild some sidewalks, it may feel that it is increasing the beautification of the city while also employing some individuals. However, by choosing to remodel the public sidewalk, the city is forgoing leaving it as it is and instead building on empty land or an abandoned property. This would not only employ the construction workers for the duration of the construction (which is sure to last longer than building a sidewalk), but also the increased number of people that will be...

...Issues in the case Did the company violate the Labor Agreement by using Glass Department employees to work overtime and temporary transferring employees into the department to work when Mr. Ronald Petrie was laid off? Should the company have called Ronald Petrie back to work? The Glass Department consisted of five employees, on March 20, 1997 the company laid off Ronald Petrie leaving four employees to work the department. On April 3, 1997 an employee retired now leaving only three people to work the department. After laying-off an employee and one employee retiring the company began transferring employees from different departments as well as having the department employees work overtime. Union Position The union’s position is the company violated Article 12 section 9 by not recalling Mr. Ronald Petrie back to work. The union points out how much overtime was required for the department previous years when it had five employees working in the department. The union also points out how much department transfer the company used as well. Since the glass department is requiring so much overtime and departmental transfer it is obvious a position should be opened in the department. The union feels the position should be opened and Mr. Ronald Petrie should return back to his job. The union points out how the company previously recalled to recognize opening for very short intervals. The overtime has been going on for over six weeks and the opening should be recalled. Mr. Ronald...

After you issue the order “OK Glass”, you can instruct the glasses to do something specific by saying something like “take a picture”. That’s it. ...Harris treated the slaves like if they were prisoners in his jailhouse. The government gives a prisoner a new identity which is a number that they must go by while in jail so that it would be easier to keep track of them. Joel Chandler Harris simply gave them new names, names that he would remember because of the persons trait or how dark their skin was. From the moment he gave them the name, that was their new identity as long as they were under his ownership. That is why Chandler Harris takes away the slaves' Identity when he creates Uncle Remus. Mrs. Cullinan sees herself superior to her employees, Margaret and Miss Glory. “There were goblets, sherbet glasses, ice-cream glasses, wine glasses, green glass coffee cups with matching saucers, and water glasses. ... I have never put much thought into how glass could be used in the criminal justice field but it plays a very important more than you could believe. In the following paper we will discuss the history of glass, how to locate, collect, identify, and compare samples of glass. The very first glass know to man was called obsidian, which was black volcanic glass; this glass was used to make weapons and decorative objects. Obsidian glass was dated back 3500BC in Egypt and Eastern Mesopotamia. People of the Stone Age used naturally occurring glass which formed when strikes sand lightning and by volcanic eruptions as a result of high temperature when certain types of rocks melt. In the beginning era of glass making the process was very slow and expensive luxury item to have and not many people could afford it. The glass industry was developed in Europe at the end of the 13th century but was was already established in Vince around (A.D. 1096-1270). The production of glass in Vince and other surrounding places until the 16th century, when crystallized lead was invented, and not until the industrial revolution was the (1900-1925) mechanical mass production of glass was started, hence the creation of flat glass (1905-1914) and blown glass. After starting mass production of plate glass then came the process of strengthen the glass (1959). This small but informative history of glass making comes to a close nearly 50 years ago glass is still evolving...

...For the Parsons Challenge we were asked to look into a subject that is overlooked in our everyday life. When I was thinking about the subject of being “over looked” windows came to mind. A window is a space that you look through, created by a sheet of glass. The glass of a window is a transparent clean surface to allow vision to another space, while not being in it. I thought that windows are overlooked because they are meant to be looked through. So, I focused in on glass and was looking at the windows that I encounter in my daily life. The idea of a window is a clear transparent space to see through. Windows are meant to be kept clean so, it can fulfill its job of being a space to see out of. What made me inspired were the windows of my Jeep Liberty. In the winter, long streaking white stains start to plaster on top of the window surface, obstructing the view through the window. It was an interesting concept for me to realize that windows in reality are not actually clean or perfect. I always thought of windows in an ideal manner. These stains on the window conflicted with what I imagined a window would be,clean and almost unnoticed. These stains changed the space of the window that they laid on. Something that was once overlooked is manipulated to be something to look at. I turned this concept into three pieces of art that, show stains in new way. The stains on the windows are photographed, then traced onto tracing paper, and finally onto a frosted vinyl plastic. On...

...Building Construction Analysis This assignment is elaborated through the construction process and detailed six logical stages of our residential buildings being constructed. Readers will be given a rough picture of how and why our home house comes into being step by step gradually in the way we are familiar. Also, technical data related to the construction materials are discussed. So the reason why the materials are chosen and the methodology of construction are to be carried out. Many pictures used in this assignment were taken in some real construction sites (Dunraven Drive and Winchester Crescent, Pimpama, QLD, 4209) while some were employed by internet searching. Section Zero – Pre-construction Preparation Before a formal construction process can commence there are lots of matters needing to be considered and relevant documentation should be completed. Some legal requirements are also to be met. In the pre-design stage, a family/stakeholders conference is an ideal way to determine every party’s needs so that individual requirements, house parts’ size and their priority could be finalized, which in turn leads to the real designing stage. Some professional consultants could be employed, e.g. architects, valuers, surveyors, structural/electrical/mechanical/hydraulic/geo-technical engineers. The output documentation includes but not limited to design drawings, building drawings (floor plan, roof plan, etc.), service diagram, wet area details, geo-technical report...

...flavor. Tuna-3 Temp-4 Spicy Lobster-2 (spiciness-2 glasses) Sushi Popo Atmosphere-casual, but still well decorated Overall-C+ Total Price-$23.50 While Sushi Popo’s tuna roll was very average, it’s tempura roll struggled. The roll took risks, adding in cream cheese and a decidedly un-sweet sauce. Neither of these worked well. The cream cheese’s mushy texture clashed with the crispiness of the tempura, and the sauce was lacking in flavor. Their specialty, the Autumn roll (crabmeat, avacado, and cream cheese rolled in crispy tempura and fried veggies), suffered from the same problem. It’s sauce was very similar to the tempura’s, and none of the other ingrediants were strong enough to make up for it. Tuna-2.5 Temp-2 Autumn-2.5 (1/2 glass) Jade Sisters Atmosphere-very casual Overall-B- Total Price-$18.18 Jade Sisters features some surprisingly solid sushi. While average rice and fish prevent the sushi from being anything special, there was not a whole lot to complain about. The tempura roll featured a nice little sweet sauce, and the tuna roll featured some surprisingly tasty fish. The specialty roll, the caterpillar (shrimp tempura, cream cheese and cucumber with a special house sauce) featured a very tasty sauce, although it suffered from having too much cream cheese. Cream cheese is an ingrediant that should never have more than a supporting role in a sushi roll, but this cream cheese was a little overwhelming....

...high school student. Because of my tendency to act before I think, I have developed a strong belief in human instincts. This belief was strongly reinforced on a day not long ago. On my first day as a server at a fancy restaurant, my boss handed me a glass to use as a reference so I could perform an errand for him. “I need another 52 of these glasses. We need them soon so hurry.” he said, also mentioning that the glass he had given me was the only one at our restaurant. Naturally, an intelligent person might hold onto the glass a little tighter, or at least take a good look to remember what it looked like. Not me. I dropped it not 5 seconds after my boss put it in my hand. Next came a moment of equanimity; the calm before the storm of reality hit. Watching it fall to the ground. Servers break glasses all the time. So what? Then the panic hits; I am absolutely positive that I’ll never be employed again. But when I look up from the shards of glass, my boss just laughs and sends me to get the other glasses, helpfully suggesting that I should pick up an extra now. I sped over to get the other glasses, thinking I got lucky by running into a friend who worked there. I began gesturing with my hands, describing as best I could a glass that I could hardly remember. After tons of...

...With a ragged diamond of plate glass.” The first two lines of the poem appeals to the reader a metaphor “ragged diamond.” The use of the word ragged to describe the glass suggests something broken or torn. The second image is of “a young man and his girl falling backwards into a shop-window.” This is written in the present tense. The reason for this is to create a sense of immediacy. This gives the reader a sense of almost being a witness to this event. The next image in the poem is a violent one “The young man’s face is bristling with fragments of glass” it is as if the man has a beard made of glass. The use of the word “bristling” shows us that the man has fragments of glass puncturing his face. The reader is then left to wonder how the glass came to be stuck to his face. The comparison with a beard is deliberately ironic and shocking. “and the girl’s leg has caught on the broken window” The poet’s choice of words is very important here. “Caught” suggests something that has trapped the girls leg is trapped by the shattered plate glass and she is probably seriously injured. The poet draws even more attention to the violent detail, “And spurts arterial blood over her wet-look white coat. The poet used both sound imagery “spurts”, and visual imagery. The implication of the bloods colour is suggested by the word arterial. Clearly an artery has been cut which puts the girl in grave danger. “ This contrast with the white coat again drawing attention the blood...

...AGILA ART GLASS CASE When Lito Domingo, a second year graduate student at the Asian Institute of Management, first visited Agila Glass in 1990, he found the business files in disarray and the owners wondering how much longer he can stay in business. Records of production and data on product costs were non-existent.and the only financial records were a checkbook, unreconciled bank statements and several tax returns. James Tan was a skilled glassblower who had recently moved his factory from Binondo to Malabon. Tan’s wife had always taken care of the company’s books and records, but the bookkeeping had been neglected since his wife passed away more than two years ago. Even if his glasswork had been selling very well since he moved to Malabon a year ago, he soon found himself draining his very limited resources. He did not expect a big salary, but estimated that he would need at least P 25,000 a year to tide him over. Notwithstanding his lack of organized financial information, he realized something had to change.if he was to avoid bankruptcy. In desperation, he contacted Lito, a longtime friend, who agreed to help him. Production Process Agila produced fine, handblown glassware in the form of tumblers, paperweights, patterned glasses and vases. In a refurbished garage, James fashioned handblown items from molten glass gathered on a long metal blowpipe. Using his own breath to shape the object, James formed each vessel by a process analogous to blowing honey at the end...
