Glasswort
Salicornia europaea

Classification

Glasswort, also known as Norfolk Samphire belongs to the family Amaranthaceae. They are a group of very similar and hard to distinguish species. All Salicornia of Eurasia are associated with this group. A distinctive features of this plant is its stout, fleshy appearance. They are pioneers of often flooded mudflats of sea coasts.

Many synonymes for S. europaea exist, for example S. herbacea, S. prostrata.
The classification is not completely clarified to date. The succulence and the strongly reduced morphology are posing difficulties to a satisfactory taxonomy of the whole genus of Salicornia.

Description

Salicornia are annual, strange looking, halophyte herbs of 5-45cm growth height. The main stem and branches are succulent and jointed into swollen segments. Each segment has on its upper margins a pair of opposite triangular lobes that represent the leaves. Flowers are borne on the upper stems and are opposite groups of 3 (triads), with the central flower being the larger one, in the axils of the lobes representing the leaves. Each flower consists of a small fleshy disc or segment with a central pore, from which emerges a single tiny anther of 0.2-0.5mm length (often not projecting) in August or September; the bifid stigma usually remains hidden. The fruits are small nutlets, released as the stems break up in winter.

Pollination

The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by wind in August.

Site requirements, distribution and cultivation

Suitable for light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils.

Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline and saline soils.
It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers dry or moist soil. The plant can tolerate maritime exposure.
Prefers a rich organic soil with ample nitrogen

Salt Marsh Research Paper

...Materials and Methods: Study site: Littoraria irrorata were collected in multiple sections of the marsh on January 11, 2018 at Waties Island, South Carolina. Waties Island is a private, underdeveloped island that is owned by Coastal Carolina University. It has 3 main tidal flows such as, high tide, low tide, and high tide. It is a semidiurnal tidal cycle creating 2 high and 2 low tides daily. Waties Island has a size of 0.5×4.0km. Sampling Collection: Littoraria irrorata were collected in four different vegetation types that were, Juncus roemerianus (Black Needlerush), Spartina alterniflora (Smooth Cordgrass), Spartina patens (Saltmeadow Cordgrass), and a vegetation type classified as Mixed which contains Salicornia virginica (American Glasswort), Iva fructescens (Marsh Elder), and Limonium carolinianum (Sea Lavender). The Juncus roemerianus was found in high marsh and can be determined by its olive-green color and sharp need like blades. Spartina alterniflora is found in the low marsh, Spartina patens resides in the high marsh, and the Mixed species lives in the high marsh. In each of these sections a quadrat (0.25m2) was placed 5 different times to collect a maximum of fifty Littoraria irrorata each time. In the lab the Littoraria irrorata were measured and weighed. Only 10 of the Littoraria irrorata from each section were weighed. A total of 108 quadrats were used, 1910 Littoraria irrorata measured, and 767 Littoraria irrorata weighed. Data Collection: The Littoraria irrorata...

Biology

...BACKGROUND Both mangroves and salt marshes occur in the intertidal zone: the area between terrestrial land and open salt water. Areas above high water level are increasingly restrictive on growth, and although some mangroves persist they commonly diminish in size and are soon replaced by saltmarsh communities more tolerant of hypersalinity. PART 1: ABOITIC FACTORS The main abiotic factors that will determine the structure of the salt marsh community are the salinity of the soil, the water content in the soil and the substrate type. The impact these abiotic factors have on the structure is ultimately determined by the topography of the land. The unusual topography of the land determined the salinity concentrations in the soil: the land forms a shallow basin in the center and is surrounded by a slightly higher landform. When the salt marsh is rarely inundated, the water is drawn to the center of the ecosystem due to the abnormal topography of the land. During the process of evaporation, a majority of the water content is removed from the soil and transformed into water vapour, leaving behind highly concentrated salt sediment. Another key abiotic factor is the substrate type. According to the data collected, sites B and D have fairly low water content in the soil, while the remaining sites recorded a much high reading. The soil at sites B and D appeared dry, especially on the surface, and replicated fine grain sand – this particular substrate cannot retain a high water moisture...
