On the one hand, supporters of biotechnology believe that genetic engineered food ensures and sustains food security around the world as the population increases, but on the other hand, there are many concerns involved with genetically modified food. In fact, a lot of food that we eat on a daily basis contains genetically modified ingredients and usually without our knowledge. Yet, is genetic engineered food safe? Moreover, do we really need genetic modified food? Many researchers do not consider biotechnology the solution to hunger but they believe that poverty is the cause of famine in numerous countries. The Industrial Revolution has long since passed. Manufacturing facilities have had plenty of time to stabilize their processes so that changing them to consider the safety of the worker would not cause an unacceptable drop in profits. Social pressure from the working class also contributed to this shift, as unsafe working conditions were no longer a necessary reality of the industry. Unfortunately, this emphasis on safe work practices is not a worldwide standard. Countries that have more recently started to become industrialized are trying to catch up, and this puts emphasis on production above all else. As a result, this can often lead to work environments that would be utterly unacceptable in the west. A good example of this lack of concern for worker safety is the Kader Toy Factory fire in May 1993. The Kader Toy Factory, located outside Bangkok, Thailand, manufactured toys and dolls, mostly made from plastic (ILO, 2011). Before the tragedy in 1993, the company experienced multiple, usually small fires. One fire, in 1989, completely demolished the facility. It didn’t reopen until 1990. These groups are given multiple tests to determine what their strengths are and weaknesses to more properly form them into the individual’s teams they will cooperate with. The teams are then on a 5 month voyage in which they are responsible for thinking outside the box to design, prototype, and build their idea to satisfy a problem definition. One of these teams are the ones responsible for creating the Tripod Pump Frame which holds an irrigation pump but for much cheaper than the previous model. This product, according to the school, became the biggest selling pump in Myanmar. Theses tripods can be used to help solve a global problem of access to clean drinking water particularly in underdeveloped areas where water is scarce and you have to sometimes walk several miles to a water source.
