Rationale
Students trained in this programme are to assume leading roles of public and private commerce of agricultural and food products. These organizations contribute greatly toward the economic well being of the country. Students that select the Agribusiness specialization will focus on the vertical integration of agribusiness and trade. These specializations provide students with the skills to examine domestic and global consumer interests and how they impact the demand for food and agriculture products. Students that select these specializations will have a basic foundation in business, marketing, finance, and accounting. They will specialize in marketing intelligence for agribusiness by supplementing basic marketing research with coursework that applies marketing research techniques to agribusiness. In addition, students will use marketing research techniques to provide a client with a marketing plan. The internship will provide student experience in the marketplace by applying marketing research techniques and working with clients to solve real agribusiness marketing problems. Students examine the efficient allocation of scarce resources within the country and profit maximization. They will understand both the supply and demand sides of agribusiness. Graduates can assume positions of managerial responsibilities in public and private agricultural and food-related enterprises and organizations.
Programme Objectives
The Bachelor‘s Degree program in Agribusiness Management offers a combination of both Agricultural and Social Sciences required for the management of agribusiness and related organizations. The program offers latitude to its graduates in the job market that is currently offered by other programmes. It also offers better prospects for employment in the smaller and upcoming agro-industries that may not have the resources to employ specialists in Human Resource Management, Accounting, Production and Marketing.
At the completion of the training in Bachelor of Agribusiness Management Programme, the graduates should be able to:
i) Have a critical understanding of agro-industrialization and relationships between producers, processors, manufacturers and consumers of commodities involved in the agribusiness sector; ii) Analyze the farm and market situations to solve day to day and long term problems in the agribusiness sector of the economy; iii) Use their knowledge in agribusiness management to run their own individual firms and agribusiness enterprises including consulting; iv) Have a sound knowledge of supply chain management in agribusiness, business and strategic decision making concepts;
v) Provide a theoretical and practical orientation to the graduate to be able to provide solutions to organizational problems; vi) Participate in agribusiness research and knowledge creation.
Admission Requirements
Candidates applying for the Bachelor in Agribusiness Management must satisfy the minimum University entrance requirements in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.). In addition to this, all candidates should meet the requirements provided in the Egerton University Statutes. In addition to the above, applicants must offer passes in the following subjects:
i) B in Biology OR B- in Biological Sciences and B+ in Mathematics. ii) An added advantage will be given to applicants who have passed with at least a C grade pass in economics, commerce or accounting. iii) Admission may be granted to outstanding diploma holders who have passed with distinction, Credit or equivalent in management, farm management or other discipline recognized by the Egerton University Senate.
Course Structure and Duration
The entire duration of the course is Four (4) academic years comprising of eight (8) semesters of Seventeen (17) weeks. To graduate, the student will be expected to have covered a total of 156.5 Credit Factors (CF) and 4 C.Fs of field attachment, making a total of 160.5. The grading system for BAM - Bachelor of Agribusiness Management courses offered by the Department of Agricultural Economics and Business Management is as follows:
i) All Course Codes begin with an abbreviation ―AGBM‘ indicating that the course is offered from the Department. ii) The abbreviation is followed by a set of three digits as follows:
(a) The first digit is a 1, 2, 3, or 4 denoting the year the course should be offered.
(b) The second digit denotes the course discipline within the Department. A course falls under any of the five disciplines as follows:
Category 0. Introduction or General
Category 1. Accounting Related
Category 2. Cooperatives
Category 3. Behavioural Sciences
Category 4. Statistics, Economics and Project
Category 5. Marketing and Policy
Category 6. Industrial/Field Attachment
(c) The last digit denotes the course ranking within the discipline and courses given to students outside this program.
Examination Regulations
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with the examination regulations as stipulated in the Statutes of Egerton University. The following practical related courses shall be examined as indicated:
AGBM 361 Field Attachment shall be assessed in accordance with the existing Egerton University regulation relating to field attachment.
AGBM 414 Research Project shall involve the preparation of a final typed and bound report based on the proposal prepared in AGBM314, which shall be graded out of 100. This report MUST be submitted two (2) weeks before the end of the semester.
Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, a student shall be required to take and pass all scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
Degree Classification
Degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
Rationale
Agriculture, through provision of food, shelter, employment and cash income is the mainstay of Kenya's economy. Moreover, approximately 80% of Kenya's population lives in rural areas. It is for these reasons that the government of Kenya has taken a decisive measure to accelerate rural development through enhancement of agricultural production. Some of these measures include the "District Focus for Rural Development" strategy and increased Agricultural Education and Extension. The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture programme at Egerton University is intended to help achieve some of these goals by providing highly trained manpower equipped with a broad range of both conceptual and practical skills geared towards promoting crop and animal production. The B.Sc. in Agriculture is a broad spectrum degree that would complement in terms of manpower requirements, other specialized degree programmes offered at Egerton University, particularly in view of the fact that extension service, public agricultural institutions and the private sector often require technical personnel that can assist in the development of a variety of enterprises both in animal and crop production.
Programme Objectives
The programme is intended to train high level manpower with practical and conceptual skills to be deployed to increase crop and animal production through research, extension education, training, marketing and self-employment.
At the end of the programme, the graduate should be able to:
i) Perceive the importance of agriculture and particularly the role of crops and animals in providing food, fibre-clothing and cash income for the Kenyan population; ii) Effect proper methods of raising crops and animals either directly on his/her own farm, or indirectly through extension; iii) Carry out basic and applied research geared towards enhancement of crop and animal production; iv) Integrate practices of crop and animal production with other farming enterprises;
v) Teach theory and skills of crop and animal production in appropriate agricultural institutions; vi) Pursue advanced training in relevant areas of specialization in the agricultural sciences; vii) Some graduates of this programme should be able to pursue further training in specialized areas of agricultural sciences.
Admission Requirements
i) To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the minimum entry requirements stipulated in the university statutes; currently it is a requirement that applicants must at least have obtained a C+ grade aggregate in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent; ii) In addition, to be admitted into this programme, applicants must have passed the KCSE with at least grades C+ in Mathematics; C+ in English; C+ in Biology or B in Biological Sciences; C+ in Chemistry or B in Physical Sciences; iii) Alternatively, admission may be granted to Diploma holders who have passed with at least a Credit or its equivalent from recognized colleges or universities.
Course Structure and Duration
Full-time students are expected to take up to four years to complete the study, each year consisting of two semesters. Part-time students may take up to a maximum of eight years. Candidates must take and pass all required courses to qualify for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. In-service students with Diploma qualifications may be allowed to transfer upto a maximum 30% of the degree credit from Diploma level courses on the provision that the courses transferred were passed with grade B and above and in conformity with other specific terms set by the university senate.
The acronym ―AGRO‖ refers to the Section Agronomy. The first digit represents the year or level of teaching with 1 as introductory; 2 and 3 as intermediate; and 4 as advanced and applied.
The second digit refers to sub-disciplines within agronomy or crop science as follows:
0=General or Basic Principles
1=Crop Physiology and Environment
2=Crop Improvement and Biotechnology
3=Crop Protection
4=Seed Science and Technology
5=Annual Crops
6=Perennial Crops
7=Pastures and Fodder Crops
8=Interdisciplinary courses.
9=Biometry and Experimentation; Projects, Seminars, Field Visits, Field Attachment.

Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management
Rationale
Entrepreneurship spirit and Innovation is the backbone of the biggest economies in the world. In this regard, such big economies such as the USA have an education system that emphasizes entrepreneurship and innovation. Small businesses are critical to such big economies and have been invaluable in creation of employment and realization of great economical and social change in form of a strong and vibrant middle class. We belief that introduction of a bachelor of entrepreneurship and small business management course (BENS) at Egerton University will create a specific and highly trained manpower that will drive entrepreneurship and provide skilled management in this important sector. In this course (BENS), we seek to provide the student with requisite skills to be entrepreneurs and/or innovators and capable of providing consultation services to already existing businesses.
This course fits perfectly well with the ambitious vision 2030 of the Kenyan government, which promises to make Kenya a middle income country by 2030. Based on experiences from other countries that have witnessed great economical development, it would be impossible for Kenya to achieve such feat, without successful small businesses and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Therefore this course (BENS), addresses an important national issue i.e. strong and vibrant economy, responsible for its own citizens.
Programme Objectives
The aim of the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (BENS) degree is to provide students with necessary skills that can enable them to respond to their need for effective management of public and private enterprises. The Specific objectives of this programme include:
i). To develop a coherent and broad based coverage of business organizations and their Management. ii). To equip the learners with appropriate business skills thus enhancing their confidence and ability to critically evaluate business information requirements and develop solutions from moral, professional and academic perspectives. iii). To provide students with experience in the development and use of computer systems for solving business problems and marketing managerial decisions. To prepare the candidates to undertake research and pursue Post-graduate studies.
