This emotion of revenge was the reason and motivation for everything that V, the main character, did. There were certain ways that V used revenge to get back at the government. He executed this revenge through death, destruction of materialistic things (like the tower), and by exposing the government of what they were doing. Without this desire for vengeance, V would not have felt powerful enough or bold enough to go to the extremes that he did to expose the government. Not only was vengeance the most evident theme in the movie, but it also played as the motive and drive for every action of V’s. V had excellent reason within his desire for revenge. V was part of a group of four dozen prisoners that were used for a medical experiment by the government in which he was the only survivor. The medical experiments served to find a cure from a bioterrorist attack killing 100,000 people. Upon these experiments, each prisoner was injected with a compound called “Batch 5” which caused several cellular abnormalities that killed every prisoner except V. The film focuses on the courage displayed by the first black regiment in the Civil War, also known as the “Fighting Fifty-fourth.” The regiment headed by the admirable Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, Matthew Broderick, must overcome an enormous amount of adversity during the war. The film was daring for filmmakers Zwick and Fields because it was a film not only with, “vivid and frightening battle scenes and finely etched dramatic characters, but a film that shattered the great Civil War taboo-it told a story of African Americans. Many articles and texts leading up to the film failed to mention the participation of African Americans in the Civil War. In fact, the participation of African Americans helped turn the course of the war and nearly 300,000 fought for the North. Glory earned an impressive three Academy Awards due to its exceptionally talented cast and arguably some of the most realistic and memorable Civil War reenactments ever shot. This film about an accurate affair in World War I mingles the idea that status differentiations are more significant than nationwide differences with the way soldiers were viewed or treated as dispensable in combat of war, the philosophy that soldiers are simply ragdolls in the paws of generals who put on a production of what war is if it were just a mere game, and meant absolutely nothing. In the whole film, it seems that the only upper class officer who even cared about his men was Col. Dax, who even spoke for the three men that were about to be put to death, for no reason at all. In “Glory” Captain Robert Shaw, 23, was an officer in the Federal Army throughout the American Civil War who came forward to lead the first establishment of colored soldiers. Shaw was compelled to go through with the prejudices of both the rival (who had commands to execute commanding captains of the new colored recruits) and of other officers who were even on the same side as himself (when the blacks were not allowed to fight or even own a pair of shoes), until Shaw, once again, stepped up.
