...“Glory” & “Paths of Glory” Film History Justice Dominique October 7, 2014 In "Paths of Glory" war is observed in positions of command. This film about an accurate affair in World War I mingles the idea that status differentiations are more significant than nationwide differences with the way soldiers were viewed or treated as dispensable in combat of war, the philosophy that soldiers are simply ragdolls in the paws of generals who put on a production of what war is if it were just a mere game, and meant absolutely nothing. In the whole film, it seems that the only upper class officer who even cared about his men was Col. Dax, who even spoke for the three men that were about to be put to death, for no reason at all. In “Glory” Captain Robert Shaw, 23, was an officer in the Federal Army throughout the American Civil War who came forward to lead the first establishment of colored soldiers. Shaw was compelled to go through with the prejudices of both the rival (who had commands to execute commanding captains of the new colored recruits) and of other officers who were even on the same side as himself (when the blacks were not allowed to fight or even own a pair of shoes), until Shaw, once again, stepped up. To prove his recruits had what it took to fight, Shaw sacrificed the 54th regiment to lead the charge on the impenetrable Battery Wagner, located on Morris Island. The characteristics of war are seen in moth of these films. In “Paths of Glory,” the common enemy...

... Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman. Glory follows the personal letters of the events that Robert Shaw went through during his time in the Civil War. This film follows the life of five men during this time, Robert Shaw (Matthew Broderick) who commands the 54th Mass, Private Trip (Denzel Washington), Private Jupiter Sharts, Corporal Thomas Searles (Andre Braugher), and Sergeant Major John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman). Glory follows the personal letters of Robert Shaw and in his letters they begin to tell the story of how African Americans in his unit are undisciplined and are eventually turned into a fighting force. Sergeant Major Mulcahy is brought into the unit to teach the men discipline and makes them train for hours on end. COL. Shaw sees the amount of work that these men have done and convinces his commanders with blackmail that his men should be transferred to a combat unit to be given the chance to prove themselves. When their transfer was finally approved, they are tested with their first major battle to go through, at James Island in Charleston, South Carolina. Since Shaw was in command of mostly African American’s, his soldiers were heavily mocked and tormented by the white Union Soldiers; however after the battle of James Island, the white Union soldiers gave them the respect that any other soldier would receive. As the 54th Mass marched to Fort Wagner Shaw and most of his men were killed during the battle. The film Glory followed the life of Robert Shaw and...

...When watching a movie like Glory I tend to treat it like every other movie that is made for public consumption.Yes, there may be some historically accurate parts to the individual film, but that doesn't remove the fact that it was created to earn a profit. This means that not everything will be one hundred percent factual, or that certain characters will be portrayed in a manner befitting how they truely were. The most prevelant case of this occuring in the film was the portrayal of the black soldiers that were in the 54th Regiment. These soldiers were not only given false names in this film, but they were also portrayed in a way that promoted inacurate stereotypes. One of the stereotypes that was presented in the film was a scene in which...

...The movie Glory tells the story of the forming of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which was constructed entirely of African American soldiers and commanded by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The regiment included different men of different backgrounds. Some of the soldiers were free men of the North, some were escaped slaves, and some were even businessmen. The 54th, as it was referred to, was a prime example and proof that was contrary to the belief that black men were unfit to be in the armed forces. It proved that they could make excellent soldiers and be disciplined enough to answer to authority under fire, which was a very unpopular opinion at the time. The film takes the audience through the beginning stages of teaching the men how to march, learning their...

...of the Fifty-fourth regiment. His letters showed the strength, courage, and motivation from the men in the Fifty-fourth company. This division was the first all black regiment in Massachusetts during the Civil War. This group consisted of African Americans willing to fight and die for the Union. At first the United States government was undecided about the use of black soldiers in the army and used them in demeaning tasks. Shaw was able to extort higher military officers to persuade them to use his regiment in combat at James Island, South Carolina, and Fort Wagner. His goal was to prove black men are as qualified as a white man on the battlefield. The film presented heroic transformations from men who had nothing to everything to gain. Glory proved an army of colored soldiers could be relied upon to fight with the same persistency and spirit as white soldiers. The remarkable scene of prayer between the soldiers showed there fight was bigger then fighting in war. There fight had to do with men of all colors being treated as equals. In addition, two memorable scenes were when Shaw declined his paycheck and demanded proper clothing for his division. He understood that the war had more to do with acceptence then winning or loosing a battle. The inspiration of Shaws loyalty to his men demonstrated he is a man of character in war and on the battlefield. This inspirational film established that a mans color does not effect his ability to fight in...

...Hickson 1 Jameelah Hickson Mr. Vaglio AP US History 1st pd. B-Day January 6, 2015 Glory According to Webster, leadership has been defined as the “process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.” In the movie Glory the character, Colonel Robert Shaw, displayed leadership skills thus enabling the 54th Massachusetts to be successful not only on the battle field, but in helping to start the process of achieving equal rights for African Americans. Colonel Robert Shaw was recruited to lead the first African American regiment that was fighting for the Union during the Civil War. Shaw gained his soldiers trust by respecting them despite the color of their skin. During the Civil War the soldiers were originally suppose to be paid 15 dollars a month for their services but due to the color of their skin the men were only given 10 dollars. The soldiers felt that if they accepted this 5 dollar difference then they were still being treated as slaves. Instead of accepting this, all of the soldiers decided to refuse pay and to fight for free. Colonel Shaw saw that the men were outraged by this new procedure and he wanted to show them that he understood where they were coming from. He did this by stating “If you men will take no pay, then none of us will”. His actions made him someone that the soldiers were honored to follow behind. Colonel Shaw saw that the men were dedicated and passionate about the...

...Reconstruction will continue to be one of the most hotly contested periods of time in US history. It is a time the still young country was trying to slowly mend the wounds torn open by the War of the Rebellion, or the Civil War. It was these moments that would determine the fate of the freedman in the south, and all over. The article “The New View of Reconstruction” by Eric Foner sheds brilliant new light on an age-old opinion. It was a commonly held belief that Reconstruction was the time when the radical northerners, or the Vindictives, enforced black supremacy upon the helpless south, while the carpetbaggers made a fortune amid the chaos. Eric Foner’s article highlights that this interpretation of Reconstruction was fostered by anti-Reconstruction propaganda and adopted academically by William Dunning around the turn of the century. He further brings out that films like Birth of a Nation and Gone With the Wind spread the myth-like idea of the years after the Civil War. Foner explains that this view of Reconstruction was widely accepted because it fit with the political and social mentalities of the time that allowed white southerners to vehemently oppose integration and true black suffrage. Despite the convenience of the traditional view of Reconstruction it would soon lose prominence. The original opinion was that Lincoln was ready to accept the South with little reprimands and that Johnson tried to fulfill Lincoln’s policies, the current opinion, as stated by Foner, is “President...

...The movie glory road is a stunning mix of sports and civil rights that has become one of Americas favorite sports movies- an instant classic. I personally have seen glory road three times and everytime it gets better and better. The move is about a small el-paso based NCAA division-1 basketball team called the miners. The coach was drafted to coach the miners, who at the time sucked. Nobody had ever heard of them, but they soon would This new coach who previously had coached nothing but women's basketball, scoured the US for great players, but he did so in a way that didn't pay respect to discrimination or skin color. The result was a team of negro players in the heart of the deep south.= This deeply divided culture was new to the blacks, and not only did they realize that the 7 y would have to beat the best division-1 teams in the nation, they would also have to face discriminatory violence on and off the court. T The team eventually won the NCAA tournament, but not before they went through aloft of pain and suffering. I like the movie because it showed the intimate details of the emotional and physical attachment the blacks on the team felt. I like the movie because of the picture quality and how it was shot, the color grading adds a certain realness to the movie! The movie captures very well the discrimination the team faced while playing on and off the court. When that one guy got a swirlie and a bloody nose that was one of my favorite parts; not because I support what...

Up until Book 8, Odysseus has exemplified the Greek hero’s goal of personal glory, because he was the King of Ithaca and because he designed the Trojan Horse, which led the Greeks to victory in the Trojan Way. At the games, he shows a slightly different type of glory because others believed that he was not athletic, but he wanted to prove that he was talented to the people. For this reason, the glory that he showed during the games was meant to show off, whereas during the Trojan War, he wanted to support the common cause. 2. ...Book Review After getting this assignment I was in a little panic because I had no idea what I wanted to do. Doing a reaction paper to a movie that deals with diversity/race is not something I do everyday, but I decided to buckle down and get it done. There are tons of movies that deal with diversity, but a lot of those movies aren’t movies I’m interested in, this made my decision a lot harder. While looking through my movie collection I came across a few movies that fit the assignment description, Guess Whose Coming to Dinner, Glory Road, Guess Who, Remember the Titans, The Great Debaters, etc. After finding all these movies I decided I wanted to do something that deals with something I can closely relate to, after some great thought I went with the Disney movie, Glory Road. Glory Road is a movie that is based on a true story that happened at the University of Texas El Paso in 1966. It addresses the events that the players and coaches faced during this time period due to racism. Once a girl’s high school basketball coach, Don Haskins was recruited by UTEP to be the head coach of the men’s basketball program. At the time of taking the job, Coach Haskins had no idea what he got himself in to. He walked himself into a program with a non-existent recruiting budget. With no money to recruit Coach Haskins was not able to attract the more popular and well-known white player to UTEP. Not willing to give up on his winning tendencies he decides to change it up by recruiting African...

...For κλέος, the temptation of glory, it is important not just to look at what Odysseus does, but how he frames his actions. Upon his departure from Circe’s island, Odysseus is left with her divinations for the next portion of the crew’s journey. “‘You will come first of all to the Sirens, who are enchanters of all mankind and whoever comes their way; and that man who unsuspecting approaches them, and listens to the Sirens singing, has no prospect of coming home and delighting his wife and little children as they stand about him in greeting… (12.39-43).’” While she does give Odysseus the idea to listen to the Sirens, even instructing him on how to do so safely, she does not frame the deed as one of glory. Odysseus, on the other hand, has...

...Chris Oseitutu 4/27/2015 JRN 180 J. Stockwell Glory Road One of the biggest issues in the movie “V for Vendetta” was the theme of revenge. This emotion of revenge was the reason and motivation for everything that V, the main character, did. There were certain ways that V used revenge to get back at the government. He executed this revenge through death, destruction of materialistic things (like the tower), and by exposing the government of what they were doing. Without this desire for vengeance, V would not have felt powerful enough or bold enough to go to the extremes that he did to expose the government. Not only was vengeance the most evident theme in the movie, but it also played as the motive and drive for every action of V’s. V had excellent reason within his desire for revenge. V was part of a group of four dozen prisoners that were used for a medical experiment by the government in which he was the only survivor. The medical experiments served to find a cure from a bioterrorist attack killing 100,000 people. Upon these experiments, each prisoner was injected with a compound called “Batch 5” which caused several cellular abnormalities that killed every prisoner except V. This found cure was part of NorseFire’s plot to gain complete fascist power over the country after election, and transform into a totalitarian government without the people knowing. Angered by the deceitful dictatorship ruling England, V sought to expose the government...
