Music of Thailand

The music of Thailand reflects its geographic position at the intersection of China and India, and reflects trade routes that have historically included Persia, Africa, Greece and Rome. Thai musical instruments are varied and reflect ancient influence from far afield - including the klong thap and khim (Persian origin), the jakhe (Indian origin), the klong jin(Chinese origin), and the klong kaek (Indonesian origin). Though Thailand was never colonized by colonial powers, pop music and other forms of modern Asian, European and American music have become extremely influential. The two most popular styles of traditional Thai music are luk thung and mor lam; the latter in particular has close affinities with the Music of Laos.

Classical music

Thai classical music is synonymous with those stylized court ensembles and repertoires that emerged in its present form within the royal centers of Central Thailand some 800 years ago. These ensembles, while being deeply influenced by Khmer and even older practices and repertoires from India, are today uniquely Thai expressions.

Traditional Thai classical repertoire is anonymous, handed down through an oral tradition of performance in which the names of composers (if, indeed, pieces were historically created by single authors) are not known. However, since the beginning of the modern Bangkok period, composers' names have been known and, since around the turn of the century, many major composers have recorded their works in notation.

While the composer Luang Pradit Phairau (1881–1954) used localized forms of cipher (number) notation, other composers such as Montri Tramote (1908–1995) used standard western staff notation.

Several members of the Thai royal family have been deeply involved in composition, including King Prajatipok (Rama VII, 1883–1941) and King Bhumibol Adulyadej (1927–), whose compositions have been more often for jazz bands than classical Thai ensembles. While the three primary classical ensembles, the Piphat, Khruang Sai and Mahori differ in significant ways, they all share a basic instrumentation and theoretical approach.

A Piphat

A piphat (Thai: ปพาทย) is a kind of ensemble in the classical music of Thailand, which features wind and percussion instruments. It is considered the primary form of ensemble for the interpretation of the most sacred and "high-class" compositions of the Thai classical repertoire, including the Buddhist invocation entitled Satukan (Thai: สาธุการ) as well as the suites called phleng ruang. It is also used to accompany traditional Thai theatrical and dance forms including khon (Thai: โขน) (masked dance-drama), lakhon (classical dance), and shadow puppet theater. ( The most common form of piphat is called piphat mai khaeng (ป พาทยไมแข็ง). This ensemble uses an oboe called pi (after which the piphat ensemble is named), in combination with xylophones, gong circles, and other percussion instruments, with the xylophones and gong circles using hard mallets, creating a very bright, loud sound. Quieter varieties of piphat ensemble, called piphat mai nuam (ปพาทย ไมนวม), uses a vertical flute called khlui piang or in place of the pi, and soft mallets are used in place of hard mallets.

Types of piphat

1. Piphat khruang ha (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์เครืÉองห้า)

2. Piphat khruang khu (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์เครืÉองคู่)

]3. Piphat khruang yai (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์เครืÉองใหญ่)

4. Piphat nang hong (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์นางหงส์)

5. Piphat duek dam ban (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์ดึกดําบรรพ์)

6. Piphat mon (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์มอญ)

7. Piphat mon khruang ha (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์มอญเครืÉองห้า)

8. Piphat mon khruang khu (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์มอญเครืÉองคู่)

9. Piphat mon khruang yai (Thai: วงปีÉ พาทย์มอญเครืÉองใหญ่)

Khrueang sai

The Khruang Sai orchestra combines some of the percussion and wind instruments of the piphat with an expanded string section including the so duang (a high-pitched two-string bowed lute), the lower pitched solaw (bowed lute) and the three-string jhakhe (a plucked zither). In addition to these instruments are the klhui (vertical fipple flute) in several sizes and ranges, a goblet drum (than) and, occasionally, a small hammered Chinese dulcimer (khim). The khruang sai ensemble is primarily used for instrumental indoor performances and for accompanying the Thai hoon grabok (stick-puppet theater), a genre deeply influenced by Chinese puppetry styles. Types of wong khruang sai

1. Khruang sai diao (Thai: วงเครื่องสายเดี่ยว)

2. khruang sai khu (Thai: วงเครื่องสายคู)

3. khruang sai prasom (Thai: วงเครื่องสายประสม หรือ วง เครื่องสายผสม)

4. khruang sai pi chawa (Thai: วงเครื่องสายปชวา)

Mahori

The third major Thai classical ensemble is the Mahori, traditionally played by women in the courts of both Central Thailand and Cambodia. Historically the ensemble included smaller instruments more appropriate, it was thought, to the build of female performers. Today the ensemble employs regular sized instruments—a combination of instruments from both the Khruang Saiand Piphat ensembles but excluding the loud and rather shrill oboe. The ensemble, which is performed in three sizes—small, medium and large—includes the three-string so sam sai fiddle, a delicate-sounding, middle-range bowed lute with silk strings. Within the context of the Mahori ensemble, the so sam sai accompanies the vocalist, which plays a more prominent role in this ensemble than in any other classical Thai orchestra.

Traditional or folk

Luk thungrefers to the most popular form of a style of music found in Thailand. The term is short for pleng luk thung The form developed in the first half of the 20th century, although the term luk thung was first used in the 1960s. Ponsri Woranutand Suraphol Sombatcharoen were the genre's first big stars, incorporating influences from Latin America, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and, especially, American film soundtracksand country music (including yodelling). Many of the most popular luk thung stars have come from the central city of Suphanburi, including megastar Pumpuang Duangjan, who adapted it to 1980s string (Thai pop) music by making a dance-ready form called electronic luk thung.

Mor lam

Mor lam (Thai/Isan: หมอลํา, IPA: [ˌmɔːlɑm]) is an ancient Lao form of song in Laos and Isan. Mor lam means expert song, or expert singer, referring to the music or artist respectively. Other romanisations used include mo lam, maw lam, maw lum, moh lam and mhor lum. The characteristic feature of lam singing is the use of a flexible melody which is tailored to the tones of the words in the text. Traditionally, the tune was developed by the singer as an interpretation of gon poems and accompanied primarily by the khene, a free reed mouth organ, but the modern form is most often composed and uses electrified instruments.

Mor lam History

Morlam has its birth in the Lao heartlands of Laos and Isan, where it remains a popular art form. Although its precursors probably lie within the musical traditions of the historical Tai tribes that migrated south from China and northern Vietnam, much cross-pollination with indigenous music of the region as well as importation of Chinese, Mon-Khmer, Indian and Malay influences has also had a pronounced affect on the dances, instrumentation and melodies of morlam.

Kantrum

The people of Isan are also known for kantrum, which is much less famous than mor lam. Kantrum is played by Khmer living near the border with Cambodia. It is a swift and very traditional dance music. In its purest form, chokantrum, singers, percussion and tro(a type of fiddle) dominate the sound. A more modern form using electric instrumentation arose in the mid-1980s. Later in the decade, Darkiebecame the genre's biggest star, and he crossed into mainstream markets in the later 1990s.

Luk thung

Luk thung, or Thai country music, developed in the mid-20th century to reflect daily trials and tribulations of rural Thais. Pongsri Woranutand Suraphol Sombatcharoen were the genre's first big stars, incorporating influences from, Asia. Many of the most popular artists have come from the central city of Suphanburi, including megastar Pumpuang Duangjan, who pioneered electronic luk thung. The late 90's saw a commercial resurgence of Luk Thung, and the modern electrified, pop-influenced version of the genre remains the country's most popular music form.

Pop and rock

By the 1930s, however, Western classical music, showtunes, jazzand tango were popular. Soon, jazz grew to dominate Thai popular music, and Khru Eua Sunthornsanansoon set up the first Thai jazz band. The music he soon helped to invent along with influential band Suntharaporn was called pleng Thai sakorn, which incorporated Thai melodies with Western classical music. This music continued to evolve into luk grung, a romantic music that was popular with the upper-class. King Bhumibol is an accomplished jazz musician and composer

Phleng pheua chiwit

By the 1960s, Western rock was popular and Thai artists began imitating bands like Cliff Richard & the Shadows; this music was called wong shadow, and it soon evolved into a form of Thai pop called string. Among the groups that emerged from this period was The Impossibles. The '70s also saw Rewat Buddhinan beginning to use the Thai language in rock music as well as the rise of protest songs called phleng pheua chiwit (songs for life).

The earliest phleng pheua chiwit band was called Caravan, and they were at the forefront of a movement for democracy. In 1976, police and right wing activists attacked students at Thammasat University; Caravan, along with other bands and activists, fled for the rural hills. There, Caravan continued playing music for local farmers, and wrote songs that would appear on their later albums.

In the 1980s, phleng pheua chiwit re-entered the mainstream with a grant of amnesty to dissidents. Bands like Carabao became best-sellers and incorporated sternly nationalisticelements in their lyrics. By the 1990s, phleng pheua chiwit had largely fallen from the top of the Thai charts, though artists like Pongsit Kamphee continued to command a large audience.

String

String pop took over mainstream listeners in Thailand in the 90s, and bubblegum pop stars like Christina Aguilar, Bird Thongchai McIntyre and Asanee-Wasan became best-sellers. Simultaneously, Britpop influenced alternative rock artists like Modern Dog, Loso, Crub and Proud became popular in late 1990s. In 2006, famous Thai rock bands include Clash, Big Ass, Bodyslam and Silly Fools. The late 90's saw pop overshadowed by the remarkable commercial resurgence of Luk Thung, but modern Luk Thung has also adopted some elements from the pop acts.

Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal music in Thailand was very popular in early 90s'.many band in this era play Heavy Metal such like Hi-Rock, Stone Metal Fire, I-Scream, Uranium, Big Gun.

...be undone. It was raining cats and dogs that night, the thunder roared and lighting struck. It was a stormy night. I was surfing the internet and entertaining myself at the same time. But suddenly, the door creeped open as cold fear gripped me, nausea poured over me as I felt panic entering my soul. But before I could do anything, a recollection of drunken fist was smashed on me and I could not rebel at all. I could not stop the tears in my eyes as they just flowed freely. Everything just seemed so break and hopeless to me. For the next few minutes, it was like hell, but my father soon got exhausted and left the room. I huddled at the corner of my room and keep on hoping that it was just a dream. The entire room was dark except for the glow which came from the flickering computer screen. I closed my eyes and felt another bout of tears coming. “I swear, I am not going to let him off so easily!” I thought to myself, full of hatred. But the nightmare was not over, history repeated itself, just a few hours later. I could no longer tolerate it, I used all the strength I have and push him. He fell onto the ground and suddenly, he seems to have great difficulty in breathing. It was his heart attack. Upon seeing it, I rush to his bedroom to search for his medicine and found it. I then tried to hurried and get back to him, but then, I suddenly stop. I hesitated. Looking at the hardship he was going through now, he thought about those things that he have did to me just now, I then...

...5 Powerful Ways to Open a Presentation We’ve all been there before: staring at the glow of your blank computer screen with no idea on how to open or start your talk. For starters, you should never be staring at PowerPoint with no clear objective (that’s a conversation for another day), but let’s be honest, we’ve all struggled with the best ways to open a presentation. It’s time to get unstuck. Here are 5 powerful ways to open a presentation: 1. Use Silence Most people won’t be able to pull this off very easily, but if you are feeling like a rockstar during your next presentation, opt for silence. Say a few words then be quiet. Say a few more words then be quiet. It’s a quick and easy way to own the room. Just make sure you can hold your composure. 2. Point to the Future or Past I have two simple statements for you: -Prospective (looking to the future): “30 Years from now, your job won’t exist.” -Retrospective (looking to the past): “In 1970, Japan owned 9% of the market. Today, they own 37%.” The reality is that looking into the future or past always sparks engagement since that’s where our hearts live. 3. Quote Someone The easiest way to open a talk is simply to quote someone. Think about that last presenter you heard when they opened their talk with a quote from Albert Einstein or Napoleon. A quote equals instant credibility. 4. Share Something Extraordinary I don’t know about you, but I love Snapple. Even more so, I love their bottle caps since they always share...

Jade Walker's Short Story

...generous tip and sent them on their way. As soon as she had seen them out, she proceeded to the kitchen to prepare a piping hot cup of coffee. Indulging in the French roast blend always seemed to soothe her spirit, allowing her to focus on the day ahead. Sitting on a bar stool at the kitchen counter, she eagerly took a few bites of the cinnamon bun she had just nuked in the microwave. Because she hadn’t had a mouthful of food since last night when she finished off a plate of spaghetti, the last bit of food remaining in the refrigerator at her old apartment. As she took another sip from the coffee mug, which read “Number 1 Boss, “she stared out of the window onto the backyard of her property. The longer she took in the view the more her mind traveled into the past. Spending many a summer in that yard, Jade remembered how she played with friends and ran as fast as her long legs could carry her. Executing near perfect somersaults beneath the noonday sun, she tumbled across the grass for hours on end. At dusk, she caught fireflies in Mason jars, watching them glow under a starlit sky and then, at the urging of Grandma Viola, she would open the punctured lids of the containers and release the gentle creatures into the air, watching in utter amazement as the backyard sparkled with tiny amber lights as the insects seemed to dance about in the dark. Those tender, innocent memories brought a sentimental smile to Jade’s face and offered a momentary escape from the depression...

How Nestle Manages Its Global Environment

...barriers fell, the CEO of Nestle Barbeck-Latmathe seized the opportunity and decided it’s the right time for Nestle to expand geographically into the developed and emerging markets such as those in Eastern Europe, India and Asia. By doing this, Barbeck drove Nestle’s performance dramatically, taking into consideration the massive number of potential customers in these regions and the enlargement in Nestle’s customer’s base. In the 1990’s; Nestle managed its environment by acquiring other companies. The companies which Neslte acquired at that time included U.S. food companies Carnation, Buitoni Pasta, Ralston Purina, Dreyer’s ice cream and Chef America, the British chocolate maker Rowntree, the French bottled water company Perrier, and the Mexican food maker Ortega. It is noticeable that Neslte regards acquisitions and efforts at diversification as logical ways to supplement their business. Nestle only acquires food making companies, the business it has special knowledge and expertise in. After all, Barbeck’s intentions were to customize these products to suit the tastes of customers in different countries around the world as he was eager to enter other markets. Later, Nestle managed the environment by increasing operating efficiencies. Barbeck made many decisions to achieve this and reduce the cost of managing global operations. These decisions included cutting the work force by 20%, closing 150 factories, designing a new streamlined operating structure and using advanced...

Fast Food

...Why are so many Americans drawn to fast food? Do they realize what goes on behind the scenes? The fast food industry operates by assembly lines. This means cheap labor because the workers specialize in one skill and are classified as unskilled labor. So, our fast food is cheap and we eat it because it's cheap, it fills us up and we have more money in our pockets to spend on other things. But, is this the way it should be? Fast food is the food of choice for many people because engineers have skewed it to be cheap only to make healthy food become more expensive. In my opinion, organic foods are what we should be putting in our bodies. But the problem is these foods are very expensive. My solution is better regulation of the fast food industry with stricter laws for hiring and producing quality foods. Unfortunately, it's not just the fast food industry that is ruining Americans health. The meat industry needs better laws and regulations as well. The average person eats 200 lbs of meat per year but if they knew how the animals are treated and what they're being fed, I believe they would reconsider what they're eating. Chickens are being fed antibiotics to make them grow faster and fatter. The slaughtering conditions are many times horrendous with workers treating the animals with no respect and abusing the animals. The reasons for much of this mistreatment is due to the fact that the workers themselves were unhappy with the way they were being treated and would get...

Chemicals and toxic substances such as mercury and lead can be discharged back into the ocean”. The oil and chemicals are harming sea mammals and the water they live in. The other problem off shore drilling is the chance of oil spills. In April 2010, the BP oil company encountered an oil spill in the Gulf that lasted for about 3 months. Chemicals from offshore drilling combined with oil from spills have had an effect on the food we eat. Sea food lovers are seeing the effects in the pocket books;...

Fast Food and Home Cooked Meals

...Home-made Food and Fast Food These days, most people prefer fast food rather than home-made food. People are alike in needing food in order to survive, but they differ in choosing the kind of food they're having. Fast food and home-made food have considerable dissimilarities in preparation time, convenience, and quality. Nowadays, fast food attracts people more than home-made food does. It's known as the food that you don't have to prepare. Fast food is more common because people are always busy, and in a hurry, so they head towards fast food restaurants to save their time. For example, if a worker works for a long time and doesn't have enough time to cook a meal, (he/she) will definitely consume a fast food meal. Fast food is also common because it's convenient and people can find fast food restaurants in all places. Most fast food restaurants are generally bad for people's health, because bad quality of ingredients is used. For instance, most of the fast food restaurants consume the cheapest kind of chicken, which maybe a potential risk to people's health. On the other hand, home than fast food-made food has less attraction. A reason for this is that home-made food needs lots of time until it gets ready. For instance, people should wait for several hours in order to have a ready home-made meal. Another reason is that home-made food is less convenient than fast food. For example, you may not find all the ingredients you need in one grocery, yet you have to look in several...

Memoirs

...Responding with Memoirs The first time that I was introduced to unfamiliar food would be the first time I ate fish. I was at my best friend’s house and her mom had made dinner. Now for most that’s not too bad but after growing up in my family ever since I could remember our only pets were fish since the places we lived would not allow us to get bigger animals. I grew to identify that fish are pets even if they are not very good one or very fun at all. Either way I see fish as something to have around the house that you take care of and not as food. To say the least it was an immense shock would be putting it lightly, to be served a meal of mainly fish, especially seeing it how it was placed on the plate still entirely whole which made me actually have Goosebumps. As the plate was served to me I was completely and utterly speechless, and in a very unfortunate situation. I did not want to appear rude by refusing the meal, seeing as how a fish doesn’t really overwhelm most people as most households normally serve fish sticks, or fish prepared in different ways. Yet I knew with every fiber of my being I did not want to even touch my meal with a 10 foot pole. All I could do was stare which as many individuals know the when dealing with the whole mind over matter thing, staring at the object which is causing you distress can make the whole situation go from bad to worse. I was at a loss, so I turned to my best friend for help or guidance on what I should do, without insulting her...
