Glow Sticks Chemistry Research Paper

...It is not like I am using it every day!” The truth is chemistry is everywhere. Chemistry is even in the smallest and insignificant things like the glow sticks. How they work? What makes them glow? How is chemistry present in them? Glow sticks have plenty of uses. They are used for camping, diving, as a decoration, or just for fun. The only thing that needs to be done in order to make them glow is bend them. But there is something more deeply than just bending the glow stick. These glow sticks involve chemical reactions. The reaction of these chemicals causes a constant release of energy. Atoms in the materials are stimulated, causing electrons to get a higher energy level and then return to their normal levels. When they do this, they release energy as light. This process is better known as chemiluminesence (Harris, 2015). Moreover, light emitting...

The Future of Books

...access multitudes of information by the push of a button in something so small that it fits into the palm of our hands. I personally believe that technology is a great way to expand our knowledge, especially since we live in a climate that is centralized around such things. Like much of everything else in our world, the way we read has been technologically transformed. It used to be that if you wanted to read a novel you would have to go to a library or a book store and buy the ones that you were interest in reading. If you wanted more than one you had your satchel that you could put three of your 500 page novels into, which was kind of a hassle. Today there is a way to store millions of books on something no bigger than a sheet of printer paper. The integration of eBooks into our libraries, schools, and personal libraries is crucial to keep future generations reading. Technology is and will continue to be a very large part of our lives and if we are going to keep people interested in written words we must allow innovation to take place. Society and the way we do things drastically change from each passing decade. The very first computer took up a whole entire classroom and now I have one that doubles as a phone and fits in my pocket. Technology has transformed everything we could possibly imagine. Reading is not to be forgotten. Over the past few years how we read, and through what medium we do it, has been altered through the advancement of technology by eReaders. When the first...

Rose

...and, not incidentally, a field trial for products the company was developing- had confirmed his suspicions that one of the new ice-cream bowls was just too shallow. The five-year-old who had demonstrated that fact had been sitting right next to him. So here he was getting ready to listen to a major presentation, with paper towels in his hands. "Go ahead, Cassie," Tom said to his marketing director. "It'll dry or harden--or something. Thankfully, it's my last meeting of the day!" He could tell that Cassie Martin was excited about the presentation she was going to make to the top management team. Tom had personally recruited her about a year ago to spearhead the biggest strategic initiative in Rose's history: the launch of a branded line of party ware. In fact, it was the first time a company in the party goods industry had contemplated a branding effort, at least in the 30 years Rose had been in business. Party Lines Rose manufactured a wide variety of paper goods- plates, bowls, cups, napkins, tablecloths, favors, crepe-paper streamers, and so forth- for birthday and holiday parties and other social events. Tom's uncle, who had worked for one of the largest paper companies in the United States, had started Rose in the 1970s. He had personally driven the company's growth until eight years ago, when he died suddenly, victim of an automobile accident. A few years before the tragedy, Tom had joined the company-never expecting to stay long. He was fleshly graduated from a liberal...

The Decline and Fall of Literature

...The Decline and Fall of Literature November 4, 1999 ANDREW DELBANCO E-mail Print [pic]Share [pic] [pic]In Plato’s Cave[pic] by Alvin Kernan A couple of years ago, in an article explaining how funds for faculty positions are allocated in American universities, the provost of the University of California at Berkeley offered some frank advice to department chairs, whose job partly consists of lobbying for a share of the budget. “On every campus,” she wrote, “there is one department whose name need only be mentioned to make people laugh; you don’t want that department to be yours.”1 The provost, Carol Christ (who retains her faculty position as a literature professor), does not name the offender—but everyone knows that if you want to locate the laughingstock on your local campus these days, your best bet is to stop by the English department. The laughter, moreover, is not confined to campuses. It has become a holiday ritual for The New York Times to run a derisory article in deadpan Times style about the annual convention of the Modern Language Association, where thousands of English professors assemble just before the new year. Lately it has become impossible to say with confidence whether such topics as “Eat Me; Captain Cook and the Ingestion of the Other” or “The Semiotics of Sinatra” are parodies of what goes on there or serious presentations by credentialed scholars.2 At one recent English lecture, the speaker discussed a pornographic “performance artist”...

...Turmeric: The Ayurvedic Spice of Life ©2003 Prashanti de Jager Great Healers, in one form or another they are sought out by all of us. Somewhere inside we all seek balanced happy lives and so we seek that which will grant us health and joy. This article is about Turmeric, one of the planet’s great healers. This healer is not obscured in some esoterica and not distanced by a cosmic price tag. As usual with great healers, it is very close to you and readily accessible, in fact, it is probably in your house right now, though it may be hard to believe that such a common item is one of the world’s best all around herbs. The core of its worldwide ubiquity is found while walking through the bazaars of India where you are bound to find a masala wallah, a spice seller, with mounds of Turmeric that he is selling by the kilo. It is a great sight in the midst of mountains of clove buds, black pepper fruits, coriander seeds, cinnamon bark, cardamom pods and all these marvelous colorful spices that the world has loved since Silk Road days. Ayurveda is as full of commonsense as it is humming of the mystical and so, especially since it is an oral tradition, it is with the common people of India, like the spice sellers and the village mothers, that many traditions of herbal knowledge are learned and passed from elder to child for countless generations. In this way the ability of Turmeric is proven and its legacy grows. I have learned so much about ‘common’ herbs from ‘common’ people that I could...
