...Gm 520 Final Stem Cell Research Legislation Manny Garcia Jr English 135 Ms. Miller February 12, 2010 Abstract This paper explains that the ethical dilemma involved in stem cell research is a rather straight- forward process because to achieve its full potential this type of research requires using stem cells from fetuses. As well the history of Stem Cell Research Legislation in United States and what the current legislature state of affairs is and where the law on stem cell should go in the future. The issue of stem cell research burst on the scientific in November of 1998 when researchers first reported the isolation of human embryonic stem cells. The discovery, made by Dr. James A Thomson, a biologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, offered great promise for new ways of treating disease. The cells, which are derived from several day old embryos, can theoretically differentiate into virtually any type of human cell, from blood cells to skim cell. Scientists hope to find ways of using them to repair damaged tissue. Although research is only in the early stages, there is a growing consensus among researchers that many very effective medical treatments can be realized through cloning stem cells. This is because these cells can be made to replicate specific human tissues. These cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissue to treat a myriad of diseases, conditions, and disabilities including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's...

...For the purpose of this assignment, I have chosen to talk about the 2011 Proposed Rule “Definition of Solid Waste (DSW) Rulemakings for RCRA Hazardous Waste Regulations.” 1. Background and the proposal or change: The 2011 Proposed Rule by EPA is communicating on proposing new safeguards for hazardous secondary materials recycling to protect public health and the environment. This Proposal will change EPA’s 2008 Definition of Solid Waste rule, which altered the hazardous waste regulations to promote recycling of hazardous secondary materials. 2. A) The federal agency that is promoting this change is named as “US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which began operation on December 3, 1970 and proposed by President Richard Nixon. B) I always have an interest on this agency, base on its main purpose, which is to conduct environmental assessment focusing on the protection of the human health and our environment. This Proposed rule impacts me because as everyone, I would like to have and maintain a clean and healthy environment if I can, and I believe it would also reduce illness such as asthma and cancer, and at the same time this rule will help industries to identify what type of solid waste should they identify and recycle. C) I currently reside with my family near an industry that uses hazardous and toxic chemicals, which generate hazardous materials and coal residues. I would not like to have residues near home that could drive any of...

...Assignment, Week 2: Administrative Agencies and Regulations By: Zohaib Samana Professor Scroggins Legal, Political, and Ethical Dimensions: July 2011 Keller Graduate School of Management 1. State the administrative agency which controls the regulation. Explain why this agency and your proposed regulation which interests you (briefly). Will this proposed regulation affect you or the business in which you are working? The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced on July 23, 2010 a set of proposed regulations that would define the term “gainful employment” as used under the Higher Education Act. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) is the product of a year-long negotiated rulemaking process between the agency and stakeholders across the higher education community to address a set of fourteen “program integrity” issues under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. The agency issued an earlier NPRM in June that covered thirteen of the fourteen issues, including eliminating provisions that allowed schools to provide incentives for recruiters based on enrollment increases, and strengthening the agency’s authority to crack down on misleading marketing practices at for-profit institutions. However, the agency declined to issue its gainful employment definition as part of that proposal, after facing strong resistance from the for-profit sector and some key lawmakers in both the House and Senate. I work at DeVry University as a Career Advisor and this would affect...

...1. State the administrative agency which controls the regulation. Explain why this agency and your proposed regulation interests you (briefly). Will this proposed regulation affect you or the business in which you are working? If so, how? The administrative agency which controls the regulation is Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA interest me because of the process of illumination when a representative of the said agency is sent out to process information given by phone is assessed. The regulations that is used by the process of FEMA will affect one's business in case of "Mother Nature" incidents they may occur. 2. Describe the proposal/change. In any organization there are "changes" that is needed to improve any incident that will occur that one is not prepared for. Although FEMA tries to assess damages done in a timely manner, it is impossible to cover so many hurting families at one time, therefore I would perform a change in the process by allowing "hurting" families to gather together in a designated location to interview each other and find out how severe all cases are one by one especially if one stays in the same vacinty. 3. Write the public comment that you would submit to this proposal. If the proposed regulation deadline has already passed, write the comment you would have submitted. Explain briefly what you wish to accomplish with your comment. PROPOSAL President Bush declared 15 counties areas a major disaster following the...

(10 points) Food and Drug Administration – I love going to the beach to enjoy the sun, but burn easily and rely on sunscreen to protect me. This interests me because I burn very easily and this regulation will make going to the beach expensive. This will affect me directly as it will force me to see a doctor to obtain sufficient sunscreen protection at the beach instead of my local drug store. 2. Describe the proposal/change. (10 points) The proposal limits the maximum labeled SPF value for over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen drug products to 50 SPF. 3. Write the public comment which you would submit to this proposal. ...1. State the administrative agency which controls the regulation. Explain why this agency and your proposed regulation is of interest to you (briefly). Will this proposed regulation affect you or the business in which you are working? How? Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - I decided to choose this proposal to satisfy my curiosity to how the FDA plays a role in examining the safety of sunscreen and the steps taken in the approval for over the counter (OTC) sales. This particular proposal will affect my decision when I purchase sunscreen (brand, dosage, cream/spray, etc.) considering certain ingredients may be unsafe and not effective in protecting from UV Rays or exposure. 2. Describe the proposal/change. The proposal/change is requesting additional information from sunscreen manufacturers to include in studies regarding sunscreens and their dosages/ingredients to be a part of the OTC review and monograph studies. These studies would serve as indicators to advise if sunscreens are being sold with the proper approval, contain the specified ingredients which have been permitted, and specify if they are effective. There are certain ingredients which are not subject to pre-approval by the FDA. However, there are some which are allowed and those that are restricted for usage as a safety precaution or environmental factors. If there are any violations, legal action may be pursued. 3. Write the public comment which you would submit to this proposal. If the proposed...

...Dear Mr. President, As the senior economist to the President of the United states, I’ve carefully reviewed the recommendations provided from my fellow colleagues and I’ve concluded that it’s my goal to get more people back to work and slow down the inflation rate. Kathy Lee believes that raising taxes and reducing government spending is the best solution, but I believe that this will result in tax avoidance and tax evasion; which will deepen the recession in the United States. Patricia Lopez recommends that the Feds should leave interest rates alone and too strongly sell bonds and raise the bank reserve requirement. Although this is an interesting idea, raising the reserve requirements forces banks to withhold a larger portion of their funds, therefore reducing the money supply. It will ultimately restrict the bankers’ ability to make more loans, and those banks that were already operating just barely above the old reserve requirement will be forced to re-work their existing loans to meet the new restrictions, which will lead to raising interest rates. Allison Tanney believes that you should focus on increasing government spending and lower taxes and have the Feds work on buying bonds, raising interest rates, and if only necessary, raising the reserve requirement. Unfortunately, I do not believe that raising the reserve requirement is a good recommendation due to the fact that this could cause the banks to lessen their loan capabilities due to less money being available...

This proposed regulation interests me because it affects wildlife that have done nothing but existed for many years and humans have infringed on their land. I have issues with companies who think that they can go in, do what this wish and not have to be held accountable for what they have done or for what they might do. 2. Describe the proposal/change. (10 points) The proposed regulation would authorize the incidental, but not intentional, taking of polar bears, and walruses in the Beaufort Sea and coast line of north Alaska while looking for and drilling of gas and oil. 3. ...Women face greater challenges at the workplace. Do you agree or disagree? Write an essay, giving reasons to support your viewpoint. A photograph recently caught my attention. It was a mother carrying her 18 month old daughter in one hand and a document in the other. What’s special about it? She is a member of the European Parliament, Licia Ronzulli, and this photograph was taken when she was addressing the parliament. This epitomizes modern motherhood, and takes multitasking to new dimensions. Just stringing together the two words “women” and “workplace” automatically conjures the third word in our mind- “Challenge”. But as work places are constantly evolving, what one perceives as a challenge is indeed changing. A few decades ago nurse , receptionist or secretary was all a working woman could aspire to be. Any woman who dreamed beyond was ridiculed and her integrity was questioned. Corporates viewed women as weaker and less committed than male counterparts. “Lady Candidates Need Not Apply”- was the common last line in job advertisements. Those 5 words in a ‘TELCO’ advertisement sparked Sudha Murthy to send the famous postcard to JRD Tata in 1974 saying “I am surprised how a company such as Telco is discriminating on the basis of gender”. When I first walked through TML factory, I wondered how Sudha would have felt 37 years before, knowing that hers were the first feminine footsteps there. Did she possibly know then that she had taken a giant leap for her kind in TELCO...

...A CASE STUDY ON THE INDIAN SMALL CAR INDUSTRY Prof. Tapan Panda A Case Study on the Indian Small Car Industry A BRIEF OVERVIEW ON THE INDIAN SMALL CAR INDUSTRY If there is one big market that is forcing the global auto majors to think small, it is India. Until yesterday, all the world's auto-manufacturers expected to create success out of their midsize products. There were as many as five players in the mid car segment and just one--the Rs 7,956-crore Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL)--in the small car segment. Suddenly Daewoo Motors India and Hyundai Motors India--are changing lanes midway, making the small car market as the pivot of their marketing strategy in India. Couple that with the fact that two domestic manufacturers--the Rs 10,074-crore Tata Engineering & Locomotive Co. (TELCO) and the Rs 223-crore Kinetic Engineering--are ready with similar indigenously-designed products to compete in this market The last two years has really been the period of war in the small car market The story Behind…. The auto majors read the market wrong. Since the small segment was dominated by MULwith a market share of 96 per cent and given that the Trans –national brands already had tried-and-tested mid-size models in Indian market, this segment was more attractive than the existing ones. This perceptual change was because of two reasons. • • The clutter in the large and midsize segment due to entry of many international players. The small segment grew faster than the mid-size one, driven...

Daewoo’s market position was based on an innovative packaging of benefits and services around the car, a totally new approach to distribution, and the customer’s purchasing experience, and an emphasis on customer service. For evidence, Daewoo achieved 0.9 percent share of UK new car market by selling 10,000 vehicles within six month. The competitiveness in UK market car was fiercely challenging. According to the market research by Daewoo, motorist found that traditional motor dealers were not making customers feel welcome. The researches also found that one third of buyers were women. This market opportunity was used by Daewoo in implementing the...

...Global Expansion Strategies of Two Korean Carmakers- Case Analysis B6110: Supply Chain Optimization and Outsourcing January 27, 2012 Two Korean Carmakers- Strategic Situations Daewoo and Hyundai are two Korean carmakers who enjoy many structural similarities. Yet the two are direct competitors in the Korean automobile industry, where they are jostling for position, pushing for economies of scale, and hoping to sure up a competitive advantage. Both Daewoo and Hyundai look to international expansion as their recipe for success. Each has formulated a specific expansion strategy in the past based on its particular market situation. Both Daewoo and Hyundai now look to international global expansion for future success. Expansion & Supply Chain The direct competition with each other in the Korean car market had an enormous influence on each firm’s past globalization strategies. The Korean automobile industry has been dominated by Hyundai since the 1970’s. By 1993, Hyundai had established a 50% market share in the Korean market, whereas Daewoo only held 20% (Bowon, 2005, p. 148). In 1993, Hyundai also enjoyed 58% of the market share of automobile exports by Korean companies, whereas Daewoo’s exporting efforts had failed (Bowon, 2005, p. 148). Moving forward from 1993, Daewoo and Hyundai took into account their competitive position against each other when deciding how to conduct their global expansion strategy. “Daewoo focused on expeditiously achieving...

...automobile industry. First, automobile industry is connected with many other relative industries. In addition, it is a labor intensive industry which needs a lot of fixed cost and the capital for further investment. These characteristics also evoke many alliances between the relative firms in order to reduce the costs. Second, rivalry among existing firms has become very fierce in this industry since the economy started to decline. One of the wise ways to get through this crisis would be the alliance strategy. 2. In the first JV, did GM and Daewoo have the necessary relational capabilities to make the JV work? In the first Joint venture between GM and Daewoo, I would like to say they fail to develop their relational capabilities. At the beginning, it is true that they had the relational capabilities in order to make the JV work. GM was willing to give their superior technology to upgrade Daewoo’s quality of product, and Daewoo was willing to help GM enter the small car market in both North America and Asia. However, it did not worked very well due to the poor communication. When the problems such as labor strikes and the poor quality of LeMans occurred, their efforts to overcome these problems were poor and uncooperative to each other. Daewoo argued that the poor sales were not primarily due to quality problems, but due to GM’s poor marketing efforts that had not treated the LeMans as one of GM’s own models. Further, Daewoo was...
