...International Finance: A Course Overview Mihir A. Desai* Harvard University and NBER ABSTRACT This paper describes the International Finance course at Harvard Business School for instructors considering adopting the associated material. The paper begins by arguing that the forces of globalization have fundamentally changed the scope and activities of firms thereby altering the practice of finance within these firms. As a consequence of an increasing reliance on tightly-integrated foreign operations, a parallel world of finance has been opened within every multinational firm and this world has, heretofore, been overlooked. The course materials are designed to address the many aspects of financial decision making within global firms prompted by these changes that are not addressed in traditional materials. The paper provides an overview of the structure of the course and its seven modules with particular emphasis on the three modules that constitute the core of the course. The paper also describes an analytical framework that has been developed through the creation of the course materials to guide critical financial decisions on financing, investment, risk management and incentive management within a multinational firm. This framework emphasizes the need to reconcile conflicting forces in order for multinational firms to gain competitive advantage from their internal capital markets. Those days where a person works for a single company until retirement are long gone. Retirement funds, 401k’s, investment accounts, and high efficiency technology dominate lunch counter conversations, versus our parent’s conversations about family matters and how the kids are doing. Something has been lost from those days where people actually cared about coworkers and each other. I’m sure if you would ask ten people for a reason for the lack of concern, you would get different responses. According to what I have learned through this course in Organization Behavior, all the case studies, and the research on personal and position power, I have concluded that people are not put first. This has lead to and lack of success in business as well as failures. Although the district receives government grants and various allocations to improve school conditions, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) revoked accreditation for the district in 2008. The Clayton County Public School system was the third school district to lose accreditation in over forty years (SACS Report). As a resident of Georgia, it is important the school systems are effective and can adequately educate children. I have family and friends that live throughout the state of Georgia. They examined both the content theories, and process theories of motivation. They gave a detailed description of each theory which explains how the needs of individuals lead to motivation. There was an examination of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and the pros and cons of each were discussed. Rollins (1987) examined the pros and cons of pay for performance. He concluded that the many pay for performance programs fall short of the model standards. Many organizations have a budgeted amount for merit increases and therefore they do not always fully compensate an employee for their performance. For those organizations that do not agree with pay for performance they must come up with other ways to motivate employees Kurland (1995) challenged organizations to look at how rewards could lead to unethical behavior. ...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method.
