...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization The organization that I selected for my final project paper is AT&T. AT&T Inc. is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and is the largest provider of fixed telephony in the United States and also a provider of broadband and subscription television services. Some of the products and services they specifically provide consist of: U-Verse (home phone, internet, and cable TV), wireless phone service and digital carriers (T1, T3, and OC48). Like many other telecommunication companies, AT&T decided to downsize and on December 4, 2008, AT&T announced they would be cutting 12,000 jobs due to "economic pressures, a changing business mix and a more streamlined organizational structure. Many locations and departments were shut-down and thousands of people were laid off as a result of this. Many people believe that AT&T have fallen victim to corporate greed and could care less about their employees and customers. Back in the 1980’s, before they were broken up by the United States v. AT&T antitrust suit, they were known as a family-oriented company. They used to have company picnics, flexible work hours, great paid benefits and excellent customer service. Nowadays, some employees are forced to work 10 hour shifts (6 days a week), work all holidays and are responsible for paying for their own benefits. There are not many incentives, employees are treated unfairly even though...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization The organization that will be the topic of discussion in my final project paper is the Labor Union Movement within the workplace and United States as a whole. The Labor Union Movement formation was made in the mid – 19th Century. From its birth in Wisconsin, it has empowered working people to overcome their struggles, be successful and provided hopes for a better future for themselves and their families. Due to the fluctuation of membership and the institution of different union movements, a merger came about forming the AFL (American Federation of Labor) – CIO (Congress of Industrial Organization). This collective effort provided a strong collective bargaining tool for workers in defending their workers’ rights and protection against unfair practices by employers. With the down-turn in the economy, these collective bargaining rights are rapidly disappearing. As a liaison for unionized workers within an organization, I’ve witnessed a breakdown in employees’ overall morale due, in part, to the lingering fear of losing their jobs. Workers ability is being leveraged by organizations and still produces the same level of production. Preliminary Problem Statement This poses a problem within the Labor movement and a lack of insecurity in the workforce. This country was built on strong union. I strongly believe that, without any union, there will be no vibrant middle class. Job-cutting...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization My final project paper will focus on the company SuperMedia LLC, (SuperMedia) which is a publically traded company headquartered in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. According to its corporate website, "SuperMedia serves as the advertising agency for small to medium sized businesses with a variety of advertising solutions". The solutions fall into three categories which include online advertising, direct mail and the yellow pages. With advertising solutions becoming more digitized and cost effective, SuperMedia (formally Idearc Media) found itself in a position where it had to quickly adapt to the new ways in which business were advertising. Unfortunately, this meant the company had to cut corners in the process without much due diligence and eventually lead to creating a sales environment that resulted in a reduction in sales and a high turnover of personnel in the sales department. As a sales representative within the company I have seen how sales managers within the department have taken a "win at all cost" attitude when dealing with members on their sales team. I have seen the practices of how deals were passed on to some members of the team who were already close to achieving sales quotas while others suffered - eventually losing their jobs - because they had not met their monthly quotas enough to stay with the company. Preliminary Problem Statement SuperMedia was late...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Course Project Proposal Overview of Organization Armor Valley Services (AVS), LLC is a company that provides programs that are specifically developed to meet the needs of anyone who qualifies for hospice care, personal care or homemaker programs, from the simplest custodial care to the most complexes concern. They recognize ease the emotional, physical and financial strains imposed upon the client and family. AVS is focused on building a working environment where people are better able to succeed. It encourages achievement with personal triumph as a major contributor to success. With this culture being at the top we are able to introduce a friendly virus within the organization. People are aligned to common goals and objectives to help with safety awareness. Even though, more training is needed to help accomplish this, the members all have a common direction of taking care of the client’s needs. These results indicate that my organization is dedicated to the members actively support each other to identify problems and find workable solutions. I am a Personal Care-giver, as such, I conduct services such as bathing, cleaning, preparing meals, sitting with clients and assisting them with the daily needs of life. I have been working part-time with AVS since September of 2009. The problems observed are the lack of training and personal care given to the individual patient. Most of the patients are elderly or...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal "My paper is going to be about how to improve motivation and performance in the workplace". Overview of the Organization The organization that will be the topic of my discussion is George Weston Limited. The company was founded in 1982 by George Weston and became one of the largest publicly traded companies in the food industry. Through its subsidiaries, George Weston Limited is one of the largest food processing and distributing groups in North America. The Weston Foods operating segment I based on manufacturing fresh and frozen baking goods in Canada and frozen baking and biscuits in the United States. The other segment is Loblaw operating segment, which is operated by Loblaw Company Limited and its Canada’s largest food distributor and one of the leading providers of general merchandise, drugstore and financial services. The segment that I will be discussing about is Weston Foods segment, specifically western manufacturing branch in Calgary, Alberta. Starting in 2007 Alberta job market had a huge boom due to the oil and gas industry. Lots of people move from all over the country to Alberta as there were many well-paying jobs. That created huge problems for Weston Food Manufacturing as they were not able to compete in wages and benefits with oil and gas industry. Due to the large increase in the population housing demand increased and house prices went up more than 100%. Living in Calgary became very expensive...

...GM 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization The Organization I will be researching is ZAPPOS. Zappos is an Internet based shoe company that has blossomed over the years since 1999. They have ventured on to more than just shoes, servicing the public with offering things like accessories, handbags, watches, clothing, and even home goods. If there was an award for the best company in the U.S., I believe ZAPPOS would receive this award. This company is not committed to gaining profit from its products, they would rather be known for their great service, and to “just so happen to sell shoes”. They go above and beyond for their consumers and employees. Offering great benefits and even gifts to their customers. Zappos has developed their own company culture and core values and it has in return made them one of the most successful businesses of our day and age. A man named Nick Swirnmurn went searching for a pair of brown air walks at the mall one day and was reluctant to find nothing. Out of frustration he called up one of his business partners with the idea of selling shoes online. Nick was interested in providing shoes for all walks of life in all styles, shapes, and sizes. He wanted to sell not just regular shoes, but also shoes that weren’t easy to find. He knew that in the US shoe sales totaled a profit of $40 billion dollars and 5 % of that came from shoes being sold in traditional catalogs. Nick pitched this business...

...Wal Mart A Proposal on How Wal-Mart Can Reduce High Employee Turnover Tiffanie Jenkins GM 591 Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. branded as Wal-Mart since 2008 and Wal-Mart before then, is an American public multinational corporation that runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. The company is the world's 18th largest public corporation, according to the Forbes Global 2000 list, and the largest public corporation when ranked by revenue. It is also the biggest private employer in the world with over 2 million employees. The company was founded by Sam Walton in 1962, incorporated on October 31, 1969, and publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. It is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. Wal-Mart is also the largest grocery retailer in the United States. In 2009, it generated 51% of its US$258 billion sales in the U.S. from grocery business. It also owns and operates the Sam's Club retail warehouses in North America. Wal-Mart has 8,500 stores in 15 countries, under 55 different names. The company operates under its own name in the United States, including the 50 states and Puerto Rico. Walton was extremely successful in running the store in Newport, far exceeding expectations. However, when the lease came up for renewal, Walton could neither come to agreement on the existing store's lease renewal nor find a new location in Newport. Instead, he opened a new Ben Franklin franchise in Bentonville, Arkansas, but called it "Walton's Five...

...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs...
