...Ethical Analysis of General Motors Ignition Switch Scandal Organization Review General Motors was founded by William Durant on September 16, 1908. At its inception, GM owned only the Buick Motor Company, but acquired Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Pontiac within ten years of its formation. Demand for automobiles heightened between 1910-1929, allowing General Motors to set the standard for production, design and marketing innovation. GM diversified their selection and opened more than a dozen new plants outside of the United States. In 1927, the head of GM's design studio, Harley Earl, designed the LaSalle which marked the beginning of true automotive design as it was far less boxy than the Ford Model T. "In 1940, former GM President William Knudesen was chosen by President Roosevelt as Chairman of the new Wartime Office of Production Management." During WWII, GM supplied the Allies with more goods than any other company, delivering more than $12 billion worth of materials including airplanes, trucks and tanks. Between 1960-1979, environmental concerns led to a downsizing of vehicles across all GM lines, making it the largest reengineering program ever undertaken in the industry. The emphasis on environmental responsibility ushered in an age of lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles. ...surrounding the recall at this time was why had GM chosen to recall the defective vehicles so long after the ignition switch problem had been discovered. They had been under investigation for just that. Recently inducted as GM’s CEO, Mary Barra was struggling to keep the GM name in tact through this recall nightmare. She is credited for maintaining her cool as she continued to defend how GM was handling the recall and pledging to conduct an internal review of the company stating that GM would, “hold [themselves] accountable and improve our processes so our customers do not experience this again (CNN)." To support this promise, she appointed legal firms to conduct an internal investigation of the events leading up to the recall. In March of that same year, GM expanded its ignition switch recall after admitting to this being the core cause of the recall. The recall was now to include cars sold between 2008 and 2011 in the US. The death toll reached a total of 13 confirmed cases. It is apparent that GM did not feel the need to acknowledge the ignition switch issue until these deaths came to light. Why else would it take GM 10 years to issue a recall? Barra was stuck in a tough situation. She hired Ken Feinberg, a well-known attorney experienced in determining victim compensation, to address the issue. This shows that she was actively making an effort to alleviate the losses. ...So even after so much was lost, a company has to work on cleaning up after themselves. So to learn that their lawsuits were pretty much set on whether or not the victim qualified was just messed up (Grier, 2014) . If someone has a faulty car, if someone’s loved one died in that car and yet they have to prove that they have been wronged, it just seems backwards. Almost like their pain is not good enough to have a price on it. After speaking with the others, it just becomes scary to know that GM and other companies like it would sooner throw their own customers under the bus rather than spend a few extra thousand to ensure that their vehicles are being put together properly. Even Toyota went through the inner struggle of not knowing whether or not they could go through with fixing their mistake. So it makes me wonder if our business, our money, means anything to these companies who consider the cost of money to be more than the potential cost of lives. ...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...
