This week I would like to discuss about how apples have been genetically modified. First, genetically modified foods called “GMO”, are in many products that we consume daily. Nowadays, farmers modify crops to improve a plant’s resistance to parasite, and also, they increase the production of food. Recently, apples have been a topic of discussion for the federal government, they have approved the planting of the “Artic Apple”. This apple has been genetically modified to the point that it won’t turn brown when is chop. Normally, when apples are sliced, is exposed to air, this release an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, that turn them brown. The Canadian company “Okanagan” is the one behind the GMO apple. Neal Carter, the CEO of Okanagan, …show more content…
For instance, all fruits and vegetable, have label of identification, if is a five-digit number and start with the number 8 it means that is genetically modified food. However, if the product starts with the number 9 it means that the product is natural, and has been grown without any pesticides, or genetically modified.
“The experiments haven’t been done, and now we have become the guinea pigs,” noted Canadian geneticist David Suzuki tells Newsmax Health. “Anyone who says, ‘We know that is perfectly safe,’ is either unbelievably stupid or deliberately lying” (Allison, 2014). In my opinion, I can say that many of us don’t know what theses food is doing to our health. Maybe this GMO product do not affect us in any ways, but I consider that this not natural, no matter what the USDA said. What I notice is that certain fruit when I eat them they do not have any flavor at all. For example, last year I travel to Brazil, and I noticed that the fruits have an excellent flavor, I have it in the morning, and in the afternoon practically all day. I’m sure they taste so good because they do not have any GMO, and they have grown in a natural

...For those of you who don’t already know what gmos are, they are modified organisms whose genetic material has been altered to contain segments of DNA from different organisms. Of the organisms that are being altered these include crops, plants and even animals. The reason behind editing their genes are for beneficial reasons to either the consumer or producer. Some of these including either improved protection against insects, how long it takes for the product to spoil, how fast it can mature and they can also improve the taste of the organism being modified. The most common Gmo foods are Soy, Corn, Cotton, and canola. There are many positive and negative effects of GMOs but I think people should have the knowledge to decide for themselves whether...

...Good afternoon judges, opponents, and audience members. We, as the affirmative side believe in the resolution as stated before: ‘Be it resolved that Genetically Modified Organisms should be banned”. Rebuttal: If I recall correctly, my opponent has stated that GMOs would reduce the use of herbicides. I argue that GMOs can pass their herbicide-resistant genes onto other species such as weeds. This would potentially result in “superweeds” that are becoming more immune to genetically modified crops which would result in farmers having to use more herbicides. To back this up, a study released by Food & Water Watch finds the quick adoption of genetically engineered crops by farmers has increased herbicide use over the past 9 years in the U.S. Summary: As my colleague Tianna has mentioned, GMO’s should be banned because there is a lack of research about the...
