Goal Selection
Research supports the general notion that progressing toward and achieving personally important goals increases people’s satisfaction with their lives and themselves (e.g., Brunstein, 1993; Cantor & Sanderson, 1999; Emmons, 1996; Emmons & Kaiser, 1996; McGregor & Little, 1998). For example a semester long study found that student’s perceived progress toward achieving their personal goals was significantly correlated with increases in positive emotion and life satisfaction (Brunstein, 1993). A number of studies support a matching hypothesis as a way of sorting out which goals lead to increased well-being and which do not (see Harackiewicz & Sansone, 1991; Lyubomirsky et al., 2005). The Pursuit of goals that express or fulfill an individual’s needs, values, motives, or self- conception is more likely to increase well- being than pursuit of goals. When I first began School at the University of Phoenix I had a goal of earning an Associate’s degree in Computer Technology but as time went by I began to feel uncomfortable with my decision so I began to ponder and think “just maybe” I should change my major to Christian Counseling. So after much thinking and talking to others I knew what I had to do instead of working with my hands in replacing parts in computers where there is not much money to be made in this field especially where I live. I decided on Human Resources Management where I can use my experience (of how I dealt with my daughter when she had problems) to help teenagers and their parents to understand and communicate their problems. In doing this I feel that I have well-being and also met the goal I finally put in place.

I was pursing this goal because I wanted to make my parents happy. While it was a great experience, I did not feel as though I was fulfilling my purpose. I was discouraged and dissatisfied. I spoke with my parents and my mentors about my decision to leave the ministry and I shifted my focus and began pursuing my personal goal of starting my own business in marketing. I went back to school, volunteered, and networked with business owners and entrepreneurs in my community.
