Gobekli Tepe is the very beginning of organized religion. Worshipping the dead began here. Gobekli Tepe was founded twelve thousand years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. The Ice Age caused major climate changes, which led to the growth of agriculture. Cities began to grow, and so did the surplus of food production and crafts, alongside organized religion. Farming led to settlements, and where settlements where there was religion and temples within the newfound cities. Gobekli Tepe means “pot belly hill” in Turkish, which is a sacred hill.
