...Does God Exist “You can’t prove God exists and you can’t prove God doesn’t exist”. This is the response one often hears when the question of God’s existence is raised. If God is not material, but spiritual, then science can’t prove that he exists, because he can’t be measured. Also, science can’t disprove, because it can’t give a definite answer. In this paper, I will present both sides of the argument and conclude that God must exist. First, I will begin by examining Augustine’s evidence supporting God’s existence. Then, I will lay out the opposing viewpoints. While I present Augustine’s evidence, I will give special attention to his primary argument which is based on the fact that if there is something superior to reason, then it must be God. We are not asked to believe in God on the basis of faith alone, without any evidence, but we can indeed prove the existence of God to a reasonable degree of certainty. Even though we can prove that God exists with a reasonable amount of certainty, I ponder whether or not there is a sound argument for the nonexistence of God. I order to prove anything; we must first start with a foundation that must be accepted as truth. Augustine begins with the platform that we exist. Augustine makes this clear to Evodius by saying “It is obvious that you exist, and this could not be obvious unless you were alive, therefore it is also obvious that you are alive” (33). The mere fact that we can argue is a proof of our existence. Next he asks whether...

...mankind is born completely unable to respond willingly to God Himself. The analogy of being “dead” is seen throughout the scriptures, but can it be demonstrated to mean that mankind is born completely and totally unable to willingly respond to God Himself, as the Calvinists presume? Are we born dead like Lazarus, a corpse rotting in the tomb (a link scripture never draws), or are we dead like the...

...life. His uncle, who taught him how to swim; the one who swam in the clearest of waters in a French hotel, gave the idea of his name to his own father. The name he dare corrected to his peers and professors. By memorizing every number in the equation of pi, he proved that he is pi. Complicated as it were, no matter how different your name is, challenging your belief of anything brings you closer into harnessing the essence of it. In his quotes, lines as it were, he emphasized that religion should be challenged in order for your faith to grow stronger as climbing through the metaphorical ladder to God. As Pi grew, so did his religious beliefs. Meeting or being introduced, discovering three different religions made him see that there is one god and many gods to believe in. He met Christ as his older brother dared him to drink from the holy water. He grew ever so curious as to why God would give his son to suffer humanity’s sins. His curiosity grew fonder and his questions grew more specific yet still unanswered. He met Muslim faith as he walked pass a temple full of men bowing on their knees, embracing the ground before them. He said, “I felt serene, as I bowed down to the ground. ...that are related to the Bible. The most stand out images are the zombie boy fall in love with the girl Julie when she was shooting zombies head(Levine, 2013). The Bible contains the similar idea that sinners will fall into the glory of God shortly. These two ideas are closely related to each other. The explanation is given below. The zombies are the sinners in the movie who represent evil. In the movie, the zombie boy in an airport with other zombies. Obesely, zombies eat humans, especially humans’ brain, which is the best part for them. Once he and his zombie friends go out to hunt some food. ...Perseverance is the persistence in carrying on with something despite the delay in achieving success. The theme of perseverance in runs through both ‘Robinson Crusoe’ by Daniel Defoe and ‘Alive’ by Piers Paul Read. ‘Robinson Crusoe’ is a fiction adventure novel about a young man who manages to survive for many years on an island before returning home to Europe. However; ‘Alive’ is a literary non-fiction text that provides a detailed account of a rugby team along with their friends and family, who managed to survive for 72 days and get off the mountains after their plane crashed into the Andes in 1972. In Alive, perseverance is shown through the extract many times, in trying to maintain a society up in the mountains, and perseverance to eat the flesh of their friends through reasoning with their conscience. In contrast, the extracts from Robinson Crusoe show perseverance is shown through Robinson feeling desolate and isolated on the island but manages to persevere through the reasoning with conscience and religion when he tells himself he is in a better condition than he could be in. In the second extract I have chosen from Robinson Crusoe is where he starts to lose faith, and he feels empty and alone in his deserted island, but then he regains his faith in God through reading the bible, which gives him strength to persevere. The writer’s use of language changing over time, settings and the reasoning with characters conscience through religion and their actions demonstrate...

In Mary Rowlandson’s A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mary Rowlandson, that was published in 1682, we can see how Mary, the Puritan wife of the minister of Lancaster— the mother of three children, had everything taken away from her one day when the Indians attacked and killed everyone she knew. She spent eleven weeks in captivity, during which she had to adjust to...

In 376, he compares the Guardian’s training to that of a dog, explaining how the dog is trained to protect the family and be aggressive to any outsider who seems to be a threat. Plato says, like the dog, they should be trained with good morals through the stories they are taught. Therefore, the stories of the poets, such as Homer and Hesiod, should be modified and censored so they are no longer, “bad representation[s] of what gods and heroes are like, just as a painter who paints something that doesn’t resemble the things whose likeness he wished to paint” (377e). He believes the poet’s stories should not be told to the young Guardians, for they would hear the bad acts that the gods had committed, which they are never to learn because...

...lacks a factor “X”, they are considered dead, conversely, when one obtains factor “X”, they are considered to be alive. Unfortunately, one can not simply ask an individual or fetus if they are dead or alive, therefore we must determine a factor which marks the existence of one human being from the lack of existence of another. For all intensive purposes, I chose to define factor X as cerebral cortex function. Therefore, those who are dead have an irreversible loss of cerebral cortex function, and those who are alive have cerebral cortex function. The beginning of cerebral cortex function, or “brain activity” in a fetus is the point at which abortion should be illegal, on the grounds of killing a human being. In order to understand how I have come to the conclusion that humans are alive once they obtain the factor of brain activity, we must begin with excluding the factors which can not determine if a human is alive. A number of individuals believe that a person is alive once cellular life begins, or when the cells that constitute you begin to grow and divide. The problem with this view is that biology has proven to us that cellular life does not simply “begin”, it is a complex, continuous cycle. Science has shown that every cell that is alive in your body is the result of a split of some prior cell, so technically your body and its constituent cells have been “alive” for about 4 billion years. More specifically, the cells that constitute the potential DNA that could belong to...

...LIBERTY UNIVERSITY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY “A Select Issue in Contemporary Theology: God-Is-Dead Theology” Submitted to Dr. Eunice Abogunrin In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of THEO 510-B05 Survey of Theology By John Kohler Whitley October 5, 2014 Introduction Friedrich Nietzsche believed God is dead, and he has based his theology around these three words. Why does he believe God is dead? Friedrich Nietzsche could have called his theology God does not exist and easily conveyed his message. Nietzsche purposefully chose these three words to send a message to the Christian faith. Since the beginning of time the existence of God has been questioned. Science has attempted to provide humanity with an explanation for human origin and has failed. Atheists argue that God does not exist and do not really offer any strong counter argument to the contrary. Muslims, Jews, and Christians each claim they serve the one supreme Creator of the universe. Who is right and who is wrong? If God is dead, why is religion alive and well? This paper will attempt to answer these questions by providing examples and counter examples. By taking a closer look at the life of Friedrich Nietzsche, his beliefs, morals and values, one will find that he does not possess any evidence that God is dead. Friedrich Nietzsche The life of Friedrich Nietzsche started out rather sadly. Nietzsche’s father, Karl Ludwig Nietzsche, developed a problem in the brain...

...In the Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne and minister Arthur Dimmesdale have a child together. In the Puritan society if you have a child with someone and you are not married to that person it is a horrible thing to do. In the Puritans way of life, everything is about religion and God. If you are born a Puritan you are automatically a sinner and you are going to hell. Unless you are a select few. Still mostly everyone in the Puritan community is trying to get forgiveness from god. So that is what we are addressing with Hester and Dimmesdale. Where them forgiven. I do think they are forgiven. The one question that is not answered in the Scarlet Letter is where Hester and Dimmesdale forgiven. So we have to infer and I believe that they...

...Jesus and Muhammad Paper Instructor: Pablo Cuadra Axia College Still alive today are the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and Jesus of Nazareth. Many lives across the world have been affected and inspired by the life and death of the Prophet Muhammad and Jesus. In their religion, both Jesus and Muhammad were considered to be the greatest prophets. Many who followed and practiced their faith still consider both of these men as leaders of their times. What is now called the Common Era, Jesus is believed to be born in Bethlehem a few years before. Mary gave birth to a miraculous son named Jesus, which is told by the New Testament. As, in the New Testament a carpenter named Joseph is said to believe that he is the father of Jesus. It was also said that Jesus followed in his footsteps and was a carpenter himself. During Jesus younger years, there is not much said about them in the New Testament. There is more said about Jesus in the New Testament when he was approximately thirty years old. Jesus had done many travels. Through his traveling Jesus started preaching to small groups of people. He also gathered many disciples and followers that listened to what he was preaching. Many people would follow him just to hear what he was preaching. Faith, forgiveness and humility are what Jesus would preach throughout his travels. He also preached about great mercy and God’s forgiveness. Through Jesus travels, while preaching the word, he also performed many miracles. He is a few of the...
