“Going back to College”

College is something that most high school seniors look forward to every year. This is an exciting new endeavor that they long for after graduating from high school. Many high school seniors take different paths when they graduate, but few understand the dedication required to achieve their dreams. My views were the same after graduating, but my journey took a much different direction. Originally signing and planning to go to UNCC, I passed up my athletic scholarship for a professional baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers. College was something that I felt could be done at any stage of my life, and my chance to play professional baseball was something that I may never get a chance to do again. I enjoyed every minute of every day that I played, but sometimes I wonder where I would be today if I had passed up that professional contract. Would I have gotten the chance to experience thousands of fans cheering my team on, or the never ending bus trips from city to city ? My eleven years of playing experience taught me the dedication that one must have to achieve a goal that few would attempt. Long hours in the gym, throwing bullpens, and worst of all running. These were just a few of the things I would have to do on a daily basis both in season and out of season. I hate running more than anything but this was required to be a successful pitcher. Reaching my goal of getting to the Major Leagues was all I focused on. College and playing were alike in this way that sometimes you have to do things you may not enjoy to achieve the reward that you desire. I don’t regret my decision by any means, but going back to school with a family and a full time job, requires more dedication than I ever imagined! Working a full time job that I enjoy definitely helps with the strenuous schedule of going back to school. Forty plus hours of work and another twenty plus hours of school a week, my leisure time is scarce. I have a family and a wife and little boy that I enjoy spending every free moment of every day with. Being a husband, father, employee, and student is a daunting task but the future reward will be something that words cannot express. Waking up every morning and seeing the smile on my little boy’s face is something that I long for everyday. Being a husband and father is a major responsibility within itself. Without a wife supporting me and allowing me to pursue my goal, none of this would be possible. I am the one physically going to school but without her help this all would be impossible. Helping support the family and putting long hours in for both work and college is very stressful and tiresome. I see the possibilities of the future for my family and that’s the fuel that drives me every day. Everyone wants to better him or herself but I get to do this while also providing a better life for the biggest support system anyone could ever ask for! My family, including myself makes sacrifices on a daily basis so that I may attend College and earn a degree that hopefully will help provide for us for many years to come. College life has taught me whether I wanted to or not, to manage my time more efficiently and dedicate myself to a goal, that I’ve had since I too was that high school senior with college aspirations. Starting a day at 7 am and getting home at 9 pm is taxing on someone regardless of their age. This is something that I do on a daily basis. From learning new ways to communicate and interact with others to solving problems or issues I have, College is giving me a new outlook on life and possibilities that are in my future. College develops a foundation for a future that has no limits. I don’t know where my journey will end or the stops I will make along the way, but with my goal and my support system behind me, I can achieve these dreams that I had as a high school senior. Would I be working for a corporation or managing a business if I had chose to go to College after high school? Possibly… but the experiences and life lessons learned through my eleven years as a professional baseball player has taught me how dedicated one must be to achieve their aspirations.

Going Back To College

...Four years ago, the thought of ever going back to college was something I thought I would never consider again. Actually, even six months ago, I would have laughed at the idea of going back. However, life is a funny thing, and people say, "never say never," for a reason. In order to understand why I thought, there is no way in hell I am ever going back to college, I need to backtrack to a few years ago. When I was eighteen, I thought I had it all figured out. I had just moved to Grand Valley State University to pursue a Biomedical Science Degree. It was my first semester there and in the beginning, I was excited. I was going to be a doctor, but I am sure that was only my dream because I watched too much Grey's Anatomy episodes back then. I quickly learned that watching Patrick Dempsey on Thursday nights pretending to be a doctor was way more intriguing to me than actually studying to become a doctor....

Going Back to College

...I have learned a lot of things during this week’s course that I did not know before and that I found interesting in this class. My current method of completing a first draft is a simple one and that is to get as many ideas down on paper as quickly as I can. After reading this week’s chapters and previous weeks chapters, I have found that the best way to start is to ask who or what is going to be my intended audience. The goal of a first draft is to capture my ideas on paper and produce a rough version of the final essay. (Connelly, M. 2007). There are several strategies that I have learned for writing a first draft. Such as: review my plan, focus on my goal, write to my reader, visualize the completed document, support my thesis. Amend my plan if needed, and start to write. I also found proofreading and editing interesting in this week’s course. Proofreading is about searching your writing for errors, both grammatical and typos, before submitting my paper for an audience. Editing and proofreading are writing processes different from revising. Editing can involve extensive rewriting of sentences, but it usually focuses on sentences or even smaller elements of the text. Proofreading is the very last step writers go through to be sure that the text is presentable. there are many proofreading strategies such as: start with the problem areas, read from the end to the beginning, look for typos. Editing strategies may...

The classroom environment was not something I cared for since it was hard for me to learn anything with so much going on. I always wanted a business or finance degree. When I noticed that Ashford was associated with Forbes, I was very interesting in finding out more about the school. Going to College

...Can You Afford To Go To College? It is unfortunate that many students and their parents will pinch pennies and borrow heavily to pay for a good college education. For many families obtaining a college degree is very important to them no matter how much debt they are put in. Applying for federal student loans is becoming the norm to cover the cost of obtaining a college education. Students have to borrow more and more money to cover the cost of higher college tuition rates. Currently, the interest rate for a Federal Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized student loans is at 3.4 percent, however, as of July 1, 2013, the interest rates on Federal Stafford student loans will significantly increase from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent making it even more expensive for students to pay for college this fall. President Obama is working with Congress to keep the student loan interest rates down to 3.4 percent to keep it affordable for students (Lucas, 2012). So what is the problem? If Congress doubles the federal student loans interest rates, students will not be able to afford to pay for college. And college is sometimes not the only thing that students have to deal with. Student loans can put students with long-term burdens and stresses that in the future may affect their choice in jobs. Many students have to take care of other monthly bills like electricity, water, phone, rent, and possibly a mortgage. Nearly 10% of federal student loan borrowers failed to make a payment on their...

College

...Are Too Many People Going to College by Charles Murray Whether people are going to college or not has been and still is a big decision to this day. College brings along time and financial commitments that you have to have. Charles Murray said “Their object is not to make skillful lawyers, or physicians, or engineers, but capable and cultivated human beings.”(Murray 222) He wants to know if there are too many people going to college just because they can afford it or do they actually want to become a more educated human being. Education has always been an important factor in life. Core knowledge, which is students learning about Apollo 11, Susan B.Anthony, Martin Luther King, Jr,Freedom Riders, and the Pilgrims, should start in kindergarten and go all the way through high school. It’s important for them to know that our country has come a long way and what we have been through has made us the Americans we are today. High school has also made a decision to go a little further with their core knowledge. They decided not to let their students expand their knowledge by having AP classes (college level classes) that they can take if they would like. Once the high school student transitions into a college freshman, they should be well prepared. Prepared to succeed in college not only because they can afford it, but they want to better their education to get a good paying career. If someone doesn’t need to go to college for their career, then they shouldn’t go. That would be a waste...
