Google: My Champion | Current Sustainability Management Leaders | Dylan Burkley |

When it comes to leaders in sustainability, I cannot think of anyone who has done more for their company and society then my champion, Google. Whether it be their data centers that use fifty percent less energy than other corporations on average or the fact that they have been carbon neutral since 2007, Googlers not only lead the pack in sustainability, but share their knowledge with society and other companies as well. Google is a search engine first and foremost, but they also provide other internet services such as web browsing (Google Chrome), and e-mail (Gmail). They also provide a variety of tools to help businesses succeed on and off the web and build products that make the web better and faster, such as Android and Chrome. One thing that has not changed since Google’s first appearance on the internet scene is the possibilities of the web itself. Google was founded in 1998 by two Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin and was initially a search engine named “Backrub” of all things. They are headquartered in Mountain View, California, this is known as “the Googleplex”, but they have 70 offices total in more than 40 countries around the world and over 40,000 employees worldwide. To have a company as large as Google does and to be carbon neutral is extremely impressive to me and made me want to know more, so that is why I chose Google as my champion. I was not able to find a written definition of sustainability from Google, but after in depth research I have come to the conclusion that maybe it is more in the actions of these “Googlers” which does not really require a textbook definition. For instance, the bike-to-work program they have, it rewards Googlers for biking to work or riding one of their numerous shuttle vans and therefore reduces their carbon footprint from employee transportation. Forty-five percent of Google employees actually use this program which saves them about five thousand four hundred tons of carbon dioxide each year. Along with biking and carpooling, they also have electric vehicle charging stations on most sites and some employees at their Seattle campus even kayak to work! I am not certain on an exact date when Google first started using sustainability programs, but I would not be surprised to learn of programs that existed from the very start of the company. I can say 2007 was definitely a big year for Google sustainably, it is the year they first became carbon neutral and they also started to repurpose their old servers that year which has thus far saved them from buying over three hundred thousand replacement machines. Not surprisingly, Google was the first internet company to gain external certification for their high environmental and energy standards including; ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 50001 certifications. They have also built or converted most of their buildings into green buildings, they have over four million square feet of building space that has achieved LEED certification status, of which almost all are at least LEED gold certified and many LEED platinum. Google is constantly experimenting to find new ways to improve their work environment, for example, flushing out on-campus toilets with recycled municipal water. They also implemented the first solar hot water installation in the United States into their facilities and only use all natural carpets with no toxic materials. In fact, every time a new product is bought for use in Google facilities, they send a questionnaire to that manufacturer asking them exactly what is in the new product. Just about everything done at Google is done sustainably; they really try to live healthy and sustainably all around their company. I will start with the example of them greening their power, this is one area where Google was not always energy conscious but through wind and solar programs are vastly improving. Around 2010 they started buying more and more electricity directly from wind farms near their data centers and by 2013 thirty-five percent of their energy was from renewable energy like solar or wind, they are also continually installing solar panels on roofs of their buildings. Their headquarters in Mountain View has already installed 1.9 MW of solar panels which produce over three million kilowatt-hours of clean energy. One thing about Google that should be emulated by other companies is their data centers. Their data centers are some of the most effective in the world and use on average only fifty percent of the energy of most other data centers. Google uses less than 0.01 percent of the world’s electricity which is pretty impressive for a company of their size! In addition to reducing their impact on the environment, their data center designs have saved them over one billion dollars to date. Some other reasons their data centers are so effective is because they use something call power usage effectiveness (PUE) that includes things like; managing the air flow, adjust thermostats, and utilizing free cooling to optimize power distribution. These data centers are actually the main reason why Google was the first major internet services company to gain external certification of their high environmental and energy management standards, which have been briefly mentioned already. Indeed most of Google’s sustainable projects could and should be emulated, one thing that is interesting about Google that I know many other companies do as well is they let employees come up with their own sustainability initiatives. Most of their on-campus green initiatives in fact were started by their employees, “Googlers”, and grew into companywide efforts. An example of this would be Google gardens, these are on-campus plots that employees can reserve to plant and harvest any food they like and when it is ready, they can take it home to enjoy. While we are on the subject of organic, sustainable food; I would be remiss if I forgot to mention Google Cafes, which do everything possible to buy local organics and sustainable food from farms and fisheries. Globally, Google chefs feed in excess of forty thousand people per day. Thirty percent of the cafes sales go directly to small farmers and sixty percent support small farmers; they have also adopted composting for their waste. Google cafes recycle twenty percent of their waste, the rest is composted. As I mentioned local fisheries are also put into use for their cafes and not only that, every Friday these fisheries deliver local fish for employees to purchase and take home. Google really does go above and beyond when it comes for making a better environment and not just for them but for everybody. They have been carbon neutral since 2007 which means basically; with all things considered their total carbon output is at zero. How is this possible for such a large corporation you may ask? Well for every bit of carbon Google cannot save with their own green initiatives, they purchase carbon offsets. With these carbon offsets their total climate impact ends up being zero and because carbon offsets can vary a lot, Google only buys those of the highest quality, creating a lasting impact on the environment. They do this by looking at every aspect of these projects to assure they are confident the production is real and it is also verified by a third party to ensure credibility. An example of this would be St. Landry Landfill where carbon offsets were purchased by Google because of its close proximity to their data centers. At St. Landry, there landfill produces carbon and methane, but they have come up with a system of burning the methane which turns it into carbon dioxide which is less harmful and this creates the carbon offsets purchased by Google. To put a carbon neutral Google into perspective, I will use the example of an active Google user who does twenty-five searches and watches sixty minutes of YouTube a day, has a Gmail account and uses other services. Google emits about eight grams of CO2 a day to serve that user, a month of that type of use is equal to driving a car approximately one mile, but once they offset their carbon footprint to zero, it is like not driving a car at all. Other Google products enable their users to save energy themselves too, like using Google maps to travel greener or “the cloud”, where approximately eighty businesses could be hosted for the energy one small business would use to host its email locally. Thus, the annual carbon footprint of a Gmail user is up to eighty times smaller than that of an email user at a business using locally-hosted email servers. Yes, Google’s projects are enough to put a smile on the face of any environmentally conscious consumer, but what does their future hold? Well, for one thing, they have been carbon neutral for nearly ten years and the next step is beyond carbon neutral. They are making more and more agreements for funding renewable energy projects, creating far more energy for the world and growing their industry as a whole. To date, they have made agreements to fund over two billion dollars in clean energy wind and solar projects. To put this in perspective, that is enough electricity to power five hundred thousand homes for a year, or all of the public elementary schools in New York, Oregon, and Wyoming, or for a car to travel around the world two hundred thousand times. Some of the companies Google invests in include; SolarCity, Balko Wind Farm, and the Jasper Power Project just to name a few. In conclusion, my champion, Google has worked extremely hard to minimize the environmental impact of their services. Not only are they a relaxed company to work for, sustainability is in every aspect of their work, from their bike-to-work program, to the power usage effectiveness of their data centers, to building and eating sustainably; Googlers may be among some of the most eco-friendly people in America. Any other internet-based company would be wise to emulate them, which many of them already are. This is why, when it comes to sustainability, my champion is Google.

Environment

...Need To Know About “Going Green” By Daniel Masters and Larry Dutt Heald College How many of you, by show of hands, are familiar with the concept of total cost accounting? Total cost accounting is the idea that, even if money is saved by purchasing less expensive products and services, that difference in cost is typically paid in some non-monetary way. This concept is widely used in environmentalism to explain that, while conventional goods and services are less expensive than those that are eco-friendly, there are often unseen non-monetary costs associated with them. We have both been interested in managing our environmental impact for quite some time, and have found ways to overcome some of the challenges of going green in order to receive some of the benefits. Knowing the challenges of becoming environmentally friendly, in addition to the benefits, will help you make a better informed decision whether to “go green.” Environmental friendliness is, of course, not without its difficulties. If it were, we would almost certainly be living in an environmentalist utopia right now. You may even find it to be more expensive an investment than you are willing to make, but, as with any potential investment, it is important to know all of the facts before making a decision. Environmentalism is expensive, at least initially. In his April, 2009 presentation at a DFL Education Foundation event, environmentalist David Morris explains that, “If you buy green energy… it will cost...

This paper discusses the research found by learning team B regarding amplifying effect, pro-social behavior, positive deviance, and conscious capitalism. Amplifying Effect Google has been recognized for its extraordinary organizational culture, which is designed to promote both loyalty and creativity (Thompson, 2015). Their informal slogan is "Don't Be Evil," and several of its policies and business decisions are founded on trying to live up to this motto (Topolsky, 2012, January 25). Although it may appear unconventional to practice such an approach in a company atmosphere where revenue is always the ultimate concern, employees state that they feel differently about being employed with Google as opposed to other businesses (Thompson, 2015). Google has still been able to maintain the small business feel that many employees love. Google uses a cross-functional organizational configuration mixed with a distinctive philosophy (Young Peoples Pavillion, 2013, November 10). Their cross-functional organizational structure is more of a group or team approach to administration and is structured horizontally (Young Peoples Pavillion...

While going ecologically green is indeed beneficial and appropriate, the process and procedure of becoming green is anything but easy. Firstly, turning green is largely not a legal requirement, but a voluntary process. Thus, even though LEED (which is by far the more publicly known green certification standard) governs the certification of the green management effort, it is not a compulsory condition for practitioners to go green. Secondly, even with the encouragement of incentives to comply, practitioners are skeptical in becoming green due to: (a) a lack of true understanding of the benefit of ecologically friendly procedures (the practice of profits versus the theory of benefits); (b) lack of short term gain in life cycle costing (practitioners want instant incentives); and (c) mostly, because it is not a legal requirement for the vast majority of municipalities. Keywords: Green management, green business practices, barriers toward green management, encouragement & incentives for green management, LEED Certification. ...affected? On google agreeing to ensure its search content, Reporters without borders commented, “Google’s statement about respecting online privacy are the height of hypocrisy in view of its strategy in China.” However, Google’s Director of Research was of the view, “What’s important to users is access to information, we are giving them that, and we think that’s the most important.” Do you think Google was right in taking this step? Justify your answer. PPPPPPPPPPP Internet censorship Increasingly, Chinese and Tibetan citizens both inside and outside areas of Chinese Government control are seeking information through the internet and other forms of online media.  The speed and bredth of information access which these mediums allow is a huge threat to the Chinese Government as they attempt to maintain propagandist views of 'sensitive issues' such as human rights, the Tinananmen Square massacre and Tibet.  As such, the Chinese Government goes to great lengths to control the internet and to limit the amount of information its citizens are able to uncover. On 13 January 2010, Google announced that it would consider pulling out of China after it emerged that hackers had been attempting to access the Gmail accounts of human rights activists. Google instead decided to drop the web filters imposed on Google searches by the Chinese government, leading to content which had previously been censored suddenly being made available to web users in China. Global Warming

...it we cannot help, like snowstorms, wildfires and floods. Those are some of the affects we are seeing. The Earth is warming up at a rapid speed and melting the glaciers that are causing floods. Some areas are so dry that when a severe thunderstorm occurs and lighting strike, this cause a wildfire. In the news every day we are hearing about earthquakes, volcanoes and flooding. Just this past winter was the worst one we ever had. Global Warming is far from over but we can do some things to try to prevent it but God has the last say so. It was predicted long ago that mankind was going to ruin the earth with all the consumption of gas and polluting the air. If we start now trying to go green we probably can pro long the crisis. You can get tips from Al Gore the former Vice President. He has written books and has video tapes on how we can save our planet. The most talked about effort is called “going green.” Buy all natural cleaning products, use a reusable shopping bag and build energy efficient buildings. Global Warming: Real or Temporary Climatic Change? Global warming has been the topic of many articles, newscast, congressional meetings, and documentaries. One of the most famous documentaries/movies was done by Al Gore. Al Gore has made it his life’s work to give us the needed information to understand how serious global warming really is. ...Google Green Project Many people only identify Google as a search and software giant, but there are so many other ventures that Google it taking part in. Green energy is something that Google has been investing in and piloting for quite a while now. Google has publicly acknowledged that investing in green is their environmental responsibility. They have also admitted that it is not just their moral obligation, but that it also makes sense business wise. By investing and piloting advances in renewable energy it increases its overall proficiency and decreases long-term cost. Google has invested in the research and development of a wide range of renewable energy initiatives to include: wind, solar, and geothermal. Not only does this look good from the community prospective, but it is a smart business choice as well. Currently, renewable energy makes up a small part of Google’s overall business plan, but as this develops and pays off, it will likely find a bigger place among the company. In 2007, Google installed the largest of its kind solar grid array at the Mountain View campus. This array produces 1.7MW and provides 30% of the campus’ power. Not only will this solar array pay for itself with 6 years, but it will continue to provide power for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, Google is entering into long-term contracts with green energy providers that will provide a fair portion of the power to its data centers worldwide. This started out as philanthropic in nature...

Google Study

...A (Very) Small Sampling of Google Products Ben Thompson INFO331 Google Case Study A (Very) Small Sampling of Google Products To say that Google is a large business is a gross understatement. The word “Google” has become synonymous with online searches, even though there are other search engines that exist. The search engine may be the most popular and well known aspect of the Google brand, yet the company is involved in so many different business endeavors ranging from self-driving vehicles to online analytics. A significant portion of research conducted at Google is geared towards products and services other than the well-known search and advertising functions. Google has released a tablet to rival the iPad and Google Maps has become the unofficial industry standard (Null 2010). Google is also at the forefront of green energy and has been making significant strides and investments in this area. A Self Driving Car? For years people have envisioned self-driving vehicles. One of the most obvious benefits of this kind of technology would be safer roads. This could be one of the reasons that earlier in 2013 the Transportation Department decided to get behind the idea of developing this technology (Greiling Keane 2013). Regulators see the benefits of having this technology on the road because of the very real problem of traffic fatalities. In 2012 there were 34,000 deaths on U.S. roads alone. One of the features of this technology is that vehicles will be able to communicate...

(Cracking into Google, 2015) Boasting twelve week maternity and paternity leaves, onsite gyms and onsite medical facilities—Google is one of the most sought out after gigs receiving millions of job applications during their hiring seasons. (Cracking into Google, 2015) Now the newest Board of Directors at Google is Alan Mulally, ex-CEO of Ford Motor Company. The keyword there is “ex”. So how does an ex-CEO become a Director at one of the most coveted companies? Well, the reason why Mr. Mulally was able to move from one top organization to another is because of his exceptional work habits. Mulally was very instrumental at Ford Motor Company. Teamwork Makes The Dream Work When former Boeing Exec, Mulally, began his short career at Ford, they were on the verge of bankruptcy. (Why Ford, 2015) Mulally started his renonvation by assessing his team and its operations. He quickly realized that one of the issues at hand was the lack of cohesiveness on his team. Many of his team members were not used to reporting their performance or even working together and, in turn, were very resistant to the changes to be made—some even deeming Mulally’s changes to come as a “waste of time”. ...channels, and a complete web experience. Couple that with feature rich phones that allow one to text, call, global positioning (GPS), and well, you have a product to sell. Google has done just that. Taking bits and pieces of everything one could ever ask for, and merging it all into its mobile operating system titled Android. Represented by a green round-headed robot figure, Android is passing its two year anniversary, and has surpassed other prominent mobile architectures like Apple’s iPhone software. But what exactly is Android? Why would one desire to chuck away their limited iPhone, or stray away from the Blackberry Enterprise lineup? One word: Open source. Couple that with the experience (the art of customizing your device), and the synchronization aspects of the device for virtually any account you have on the net, and you have a total package. Having a total package within arm’s reach, and inside your pocket is quite a powerful tool. With Google’s Android platform, there is never a point where you can say No. Any and every idea can and could be coded into the device if you have the means to do so. Open source is the ticket. Asking yourself what this means is actually a very simple question. Open source is the definition of computer code that is freely available to anyone who wishes to find it. They all have pretty much the same the same basic solutions put what separates them is pricing and other services. They all offer a cloud solution that would work for most but it’s the extras that would make the individual customer decision. Cost: The cost of each varies greatly depending on needs and extra features they would like. It seems that Amazon has the most expensive pricing by offering one or three year terms with a upfront cost per user with a hourly cost attached to its usage. The prices also vary on type of usage and the features you want. Amazon seems to be the priced low until you start adding in other features and can be purchased in 1 or 3 year terms. Google in my opinion offers the best pricing per user for the features offered. They offer monthly pricing as low as ten dollars a user with what seems the most features. They offer a great deal in their package and is pretty straight forward with what you get. It is not confusing or misleading. Rackspace also offers monthly pricing which seems to be straight forward but also looks to be online with the pricing of Amazon. Also depending on the package you pick you may not get the all the services you require and would have to pay extra to come up with a custom package for your needs.
