GOLF BALLS

The design and aerodynamics of a golf ball is very interesting. I've always wondered why a golf ball has all those little dimples on it (I just thought it was for the look) but never took the time to read about it until now. About 600 years ago someone realized that an older, rougher ball performed better than a new smoother ball, thus the evolution of dimples. In the last 150 years, research and tests have been conducted to see if the performance of the golf ball could be enhanced. Research found through wind tunnels and an indoor test range that, on a smooth ball the airflow separates from the ball at 80 degrees from the direction of flight (more to the front of the ball). This in turn creates a large turbulent flow (low pressure area) at the rear of the ball creating unwanted drag. The same tests were conducted on golf balls with dimples, showing that the dimples create surface turbulence, which increases the energy to the airflow along the surface of the ball. This makes the airflow separate at 110 degrees from the direction of flight (more to the rear of the ball), thus in turn creating a smaller turbulent flow (low pressure area) at the rear of the ball creating less drag.

With all the research that has been conducted over the last 150 years experts have come to the conclusion that there is only about ± 4 yards to gain on the maximum range of a golf ball. So next they will have to turn to research on the clubs.

The consumers of golf equipment were cutting down their spending and as a result the retail outlets closed at an alarming rate of 25%. The investment in golf course real estate and development sector also fell down over 40%. The sales shifted from on-course pro-shops to off-course retailers. USGA was aware of this and to halt this trend aimed at making golf more accessible. Altius Golf was an undisputed leader in the golf ball manufacturing market in spite of a long term decline in the number of golfers and huge drop in sales resulting from financial crisis. Due to lack in innovation and high priced products, the company has been losing market share to its rivals. The CEO, therefore, wants to launch a new product called Elevate to foster the next generation of golfers. With Elevate, the firm will introduce 4 balls that are more forgiving and easier to drive for distance and offer it at a price 40% below the company's flagship brand. It has now become necessary for Altius to relook into its strategy and come up with the “Elevate Strategy” to regain its market. However the question...

The second one is the chanllege from outside of Altius. Its leading position in the golf ball market is now chipped away by other manufacturers. The third one is the chanllege from inside of Altius. The Elevate program is distrusted by most of the directors. They doubted that the program will damage the company’s reputation, price structure and profit instead of saving Altius. 2. Briefly state your assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of Altius at the time of this decision (1/3 page) Strengths Even though the golf ball market share of Altius is reducing, it is still much higher than any other manufacturers’. Moreover, the range of Altius’products is very wide due to the establishment of the ”on-course” and “off-course” outlets. In addtion, Altius has a good reputation. Weaknesses Altius’s golf balls are more expensive and less accessible for new golfers than other competitors. In addition, Altius reacted later than its competitors. 3. Briefly state your assessment of the primary opportunities and threats in the marketplace for Altius at the time of this decision. (1/3 page) Opportunities The first opportunity is that the financial crisis has already gone, and the golf ball market is reviving. DOLAN SUNRU YONG Altius Golf and the Fighter Brand Introduction Evelyn Gracie, CEO of Altius Golf, took a deep breath before introducing the company’s new golf ball strategy to the board. Several years after the global recession of 2008–2010, the private-equityowned company’s revenues had not fully recovered, and there had been grumbling among some of the directors that the old strategy was no longer working. Gracie had been hired at the end of 2012 to turn things around. Over the last six months, she and Austin Kai, the chief marketing officer, had worked on a plan to shake up the golf ball market and strengthen Altius’s leadership position. Now Gracie needed to communicate to her board a clear, compelling vision, backed by a well-articulated rationale: As everyone knows, the long-term industry trends have been worrisome. The number of new golfers has fallen, and the few who take up the sport tend to be less serious and more pricesensitive. We have seen this magnified in our own business as lower-priced competitors have stolen market share. We believe Altius’s long-term success will come from fostering a new generation of loyal golfers, and this will come when we make our brand more fun, affordable, and accessible. If we can attract new and casual golfers into our brand, we will gradually migrate them to our flagship products. This thinking is at the heart of Altius Elevate. Gracie proceeded to outline the Elevate program...

Nike Business Strategy

...Nike's grand strategy is Growth . The company feels the international marketplace (rather than the domestic) is where the majority of growth will be realized in the next five years. Product Differentiation is the product strategy that Nike has utilized and will continue to use as design creativity is one of Nike's core competencies. International Marketing Nike feels strongly that their biggest opportunities for growth lie in the countries on South Africa, India, Mexico, Peru, Chili, Bolivia, and several eastern European countries. Nike is planning to expand marketing in these areas in the next several years to build demand and distribution systems. Nike also plans to contract manufacture its shoes in several of these countries. Contract ManufacturingThe use of contract manufacturers is only way in which Nike produces anything. Nike does not directly manufacture anything. Nike provides footwear and apparel designs to it hundreds of different contract manufacturers and they make the products. Nike plans to continue using this strategy for manufacturing while building their design and marketing core competencies. Labor Practices Nike has come under a great deal of fire from the press and the public about the pay and conditions the workers receive at its contract manufacturing facilities in the far east. The bad press contributed to poor performance in 1998 for Nike. During the past year, Nike's CEO strengthened the company's labor practices by ordering implementation of several...

Stratagies for Competition in the Golf Industry

...Alternative Strategies Healthy competition within the industry is apparent. The major issues lie with regulations, loss of consumers/interest, the recession, and the counterfeiting wars. All companies have strategies that are effective, but should be changed to adjust to the current environmental issues. Callaway currently has an effective strategy focusing on research and development and remains the industry leader. TaylorMade is focusing on out sourcing production in order to increase operating margin and is second in the industry. Titleist is focusing on their strong golf ball market. This is dangerous because if they were to start losing market share, the heavy reliance could negatively impact the company and they could lose millions. Ping currently focuses on its drivers and irons which are selling well, but because of their limited amount of product lines it remains fourth in the industry. Nike relies heavily on endorsements and is the younger company in the golfing industry. The following are three alternative strategies that can help the companies and industry as a whole live up to their full potential at this point in time. Blue Ocean Strategy All the golfing manufacturers could benefit from a blue ocean strategy. A blue ocean strategy is one in which “growth in profits or revenues is achieved by discovering or inventing new industry segments that create altogether new demand.” (Gamble, 2011) In the golfing industry competitors are constantly trying to beat each...

...known as Hooke’s Law: The restoring force exerted by an elastic object is proportional to how far it has been distorted from its equilibrium state. Everything we associate with springs, has some place in the behavior of balls (Bloomfield, p.69). When a ball or a spring returns to its equilibrium state, it releases stored energy. Isaac Newton and the Law of Universal Gravitation: Isaac Newton (16431727) studied gravity and its effects on falling objects. He is most famous for the three laws of motion. Newton’s law of universal gravitation states that every point mass attracts every single other point mass by a force pointing along the line intersecting both points. The earth’s gravity exerts a downward force on the ball, called the ball’s weight. Its weight causes the ball to accelerate downward (Bloomfield p. 10). Reasoning: What does elastic mean? When a rubber band gets stretched it returns to its original shape. What is something that is not elastic? When a piece of bubble gum gets stretched, it stays stretched. It does not return to its original shape. When a ball hits the floor, the energy of the collision is stored as a physical deformation of the ball (On the Rebound, 2011 para. 3). The ball has kinetic energy just before it touches the floor. As the ball gets squeezed against the floor, kinetic energy is converted to potential energy. If all the...

PI was a technology pioneered by them and developed by Batelle Memorial Institute (BMI), which indicated the condition of a used golf ball for further use after being submerged in water for an extended period of time. The concept enabled the color of a golf ball to turn gray if it was not fit for reuse. They truly believed PI was a cracker of a concept and saw huge market for their product. Situational Analysis Performance Indicator concept and development process • PI started as a concept when both Robb and Bob, golfers themselves, came up with the idea of the ball itself telling whether it is fit for reuse or not. • This basic idea made them work on the dual path of building the concept to a full-fledged product and patenting the same. • They were issued first patent for PI in 1998, where PI had the exclusive right to employ the technology on golf balls. • In 2000 May, Batelle Memorial Institute (BMI) delivered the prototype. BMI retained the patent for the chemical technology itself and PI retailed to utilization of the technology on golf balls through patents. • PI converted the color of the ball into gray after significant period of submersion into water. The color change was irreversible. • The technology could easily be incorporated by golf ball manufacturers by simply mixing the...

The History Of Golf

...INTRODUCTION Many people feel that golf is just "a good walk wasted". After all, what’s so fun and interesting about hitting a little white ball with a metal stick trying to get it in a little hole? The answer is YES, there is fun to be had on the golf course, as is evidenced by the millions of golf enthusiasts all over the world. The history of golf is a debate as to whether the game was invented by the Chinese, the Dutch, or the Scottish. A game similar to golf was first mentioned in Dongxuan Records, a Chinese book from the Eleventh Century. In 1297 it is mentioned another game similar to golf in the Netherlands. The Dutch played it using a stick and a leather ball. Whoever hit the ball in a target several hundreds of meters away the least number of times, won....

Personal Narrative: How Golf Changed My Life

...remember, my Dad and Grandpa always went golfing. My opinion of golf was that it is an old man’s sport because all of the people I know who were passionate about the sport were old men. In my opinion I thought golf was pointless, and it didn’t make sense. I hated golf, but it was always on the TV in my house. So, sometimes, I had no choice but to watch since the other TVs were in use by other members of my family watching things I was even less interested in than golf. As the years passed, and the more I watched golf on TV with my dad, the more I became interested in the sport. Golf Personal Statement

...The early morning tee time, the rush of adrenaline, and the crisp aroma of grass are my favorite memories that bring me back to the golf course every week. My father introduced me to golf at the age of seven. Growing up, golf was always a hobby and passion my father and I shared. I joined the First Tee, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching underprivileged youth the values of leadership through golf. In my freshman year, I was given the opportunity to become fundraising coordinator and volunteer coach for the First Tee. With the First Tee, I taught young students about the core values of golf and coached students the basics of golf. I discovered that my passion for golf stemmed from the fact that I was playing not only for myself, but to be a role-model for young golfers. From involving myself as a team captain on my school’s golf team and a volunteer coach at the First Tee, I realize I want to continue my mission to improve the lives of underprivileged students....
