In Africa, work was vigorously executed; to pass by the agonizing hours workers combined folksong with worksongs. This expression of song was not favored by European bosses, and was punished severely. The people’s love for music only grew stronger, and they established the Gome genre in the middle of this outrage. At play or work time, Gome became very popular, and was even performed as goodbye songs during the funerals of good friends.
Originating in Ghana, Gome songs are sung in the Ga and English languages typically by males. Barbara Hampton, an ethnomusicologist studying this Ga tradition stated, “(Gome) served as a bridge across ethnic boundaries among colonial subjects for the limited objective of recreation.” Gome surrounds the idea

Although this model has been well-accepted and the basic empirical finding holds true across a range of industries, we propose that the finding is not as robust as is generally assumed. We introduce an alternative pattern of evolution in which, during the emergent stage, an industry experiences a sharp decrease in the number of firms – a “mini shakeout” – before increasing again, reaching a final peak and undergoing a major shakeout as described in the extant literature...

Globalization of Cemex

...9-701-017 REV: NOVEMBER 29, 2004 PANKAJ GHEMAWAT The Globalization of CEMEX Geographic diversification enables us to operate in multiple regions with different business cycles. For the long term, we are trying to ensure that no one market accounts for more than one third of our business. Yet we do not diversify simply to balance cyclic downturns and upswings. We do not see volatility as an occasional, random element added to the cost of doing business in an interconnected global marketplace. We plan for volatility. We prepare for it. We have learned how to profit from it. Lorenzo Zambrano, CEO of CEMEX.1 In 1990, Cementos Mexicanos was a Mexican cement company that faced trade sanctions in its major export market, the United States. By the end of 1999, CEMEX operated cement plants in 15 countries, owned production or distribution facilities in a total of 30, and traded cement in more than 60. Non-Mexican operations accounted for nearly 60% of assets, slightly over 50% of revenues and 40% of EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) that year. CEMEX’s sales revenues had increased from less than $1 billion in 1989 to nearly $5 billion in 1999, and it had become the third largest cement company in the world in terms of capacity, as well as the largest international trader. Growth had been achieved without compromising profitability: in the late 1990s, its ratio of EBITDA to sales ranged between 30% and 40%—ten to fifteen percentage...

Project Valuation

...Project Evaluation Corporate Finance 2013-2014 The 14 essays convey many interesting ideas. I am very impressed by some analysis which gives very technical and detailed description. These works have shown that you have great potential to go further, either to a comprehensive report for practical consultancy or to deepen the knowledge for academic research. However, there are some problems that I must mention for your future work. • Lack of theoretical foundations: Some reports just filled the paper with lots of facts, figures and data. The question follows is often “and so what?” The report will be more scientific based if you provide some explanations linking to the theories and interpretations we learned in the class. Present your shining points first: Many reports just give the introduction as a general description of the background of the selected companies. However, a more important part expected in these reports is your research questions and key points of analysis. If you don’t highlight the shining points from the beginning, you make your report less worthy of further reading. Coordination problem: I found some reports give strongly contradict results. I understand that you just share the task among the team members. But at least you must have something complete and logically right. Avoid using abbreviations for words that are less frequently used (eg. ADS, ROI, OTC…). If you insist to use, please write the full words for the first time you employ them. Reference of...

...from freeways, the achievable throughput is subject to regulatory constraints such as speeds and societal limitations such as headways between vehicles. Historical traffic volumes indicate that hourly throughputs per lane are generally increasing over time. This reflects a reduction in headways between vehicles as motorists’ acceptable and safe gaps between vehicles become smaller. As a direct consequence, the capacity of freeways has been observed to increase over time. The most recent edition of the US Highway Capacity Manual indicates a ceiling value significantly higher than that applied fifteen years prior. This paper has set out to identify the changing values of capacities over time as applied to freeway traffic conditions. The paper examines capacity in the context of observed volumes to date from both an Australian and International experience. This paper then examines the car following algorithm in the VISSIM microsimulation software to benchmark the similarity of the maximum freeway capacity against these observed volumes. This review of existing literature was initially undertaken when developing a VISSIM microsimulation model to examine the application of forecast...

Teens and Social Media

...Gina Gomes Professor Brand English 251 12 July 2013 Social-Network Effects on Teenagers Social media is undoubtedly the life blood of most teenagers today. Young adults, especially in the 13-17 age groups are constantly checking messages, updating posts and sharing photos on online media. According to a study by Roiworld’s Teens and Social Networks in 2010, “… teenagers spend an average of 80% of their time on online sites and this figure grows every year” (Gallo 16). With such a huge following it has become necessary for research to be conducted on the overall effect of social media on teenagers everywhere. This paper aims to explore the positive and negative effects of social media on teenagers today. With the natural curiosity that most teenagers hold, they are naturally anxious to meet new people and possibly make new friends and contacts. Online social media provide the perfect setting to do exactly that. Teenagers are able to interact with people from all over the world. This serves to not only increase their general knowledge but it enables this generation to be more tolerant of cultures and beliefs that differ from their own. New technology including smart phones with video and photo capabilities, iPad and other tablets, and portable Wi-Fi docs have made the Internet infinitely more assessable (Wolak, Mitchell & Finkelhor, 2006). Although technology has been associated with many positive effects, cyber bullying, sexting and slut shaming...

Consensual Relationship Agreements

...Consensual Relationship Agreements Case Study AnnMarie Bus 520 Leadership and Organizational Behavior Leonardo R Serrano, PhD January 27, 2013 Consensual Relationship Agreements Case Study For many people, we have grown up sharing intimate glimpses into the love lives of our favorite television or soap opera characters who found romance within their work environment. At the “Daily Planet”, we observed Clark Kent and Lois Lane navigate the delicate path of working with each other while engaged in a relationship. Jim and Pam Halpert from “The Office” had to walk the fine line of performing effectively at their jobs while working together first as friends and then later, as a married couple. Just as these characters have found love within their workplace, in reality many of us find ourselves observing or even participating in romantic relationships amongst our own colleagues. In contemporary society, many companies are faced with the dilemma of trying to manage the workplace romances that occur on a daily basis. Businesses may exercise Consensual Relationship Agreements (CRAs) (Hellriegel & Slocum, Jr., 2011) as a means to control the inevitable work place dating which occurs within their company; while other businesses may decide to forgo having a CRA as a policy for their employees. There are both positive and negative implications to implementing a Consensual Relationship Agreement within the work place. Ethical principles also can arise from having such...

...CHINA’S NEWEST SHOPPING CRAZE Last month, Fiona Li did what millions of Chinese shoppers do to find a bargain: she went online. A few clicks later, she had a lead on where to buy the consumer goodies her brother wanted for his new apartment. Instead of reaching for her credit card, though, she jotted down a time and a place: 8 p.m. at a downtown electronics store. That evening, Ms. Li and her brother joined 15 strangers at the store to demand a group discount on a new television, refrigerator, and washing machine. Salespeople grumbled at the tactic, but the group refused to buckle. After two hours of haggling, and several walkouts by group members, the store manager agreed to a 10 percent markdown on the three items. Li, a marketing assistant, went home with a smile on her face. "We wanted to save money, and finally we did it," she says. "It's in our nature, whether we're rich or poor, and if we can save money this way, why not?" Welcome to China's newest shopping craze, tuangou, or team buying. By combining the power of the Internet to compare prices with the stealth tactics of the flash mob, team buyers are driving hard bargains in the world's hottest economy. Dozens of team-buying websites have sprung up to catch the trend, which first began in online forums and chat rooms. Typically, shoppers looking for the same items find each other online, then band together offline to negotiate special deals on electronics, home furnishings, and automobiles. Some team buyers approach...
