“Gone with the wind” ”_ written by Margaret Mitchell, has been one of the famous literary classics of all time when it first published in 1936. The famousness of the novel mostly come from the way Margaret Mitchell created the characters, creating haunting scenes and thrilling portraits of characters so vivid that we remember their words and feel their fear and hunger for the rest of our lives, especially Scarlett O’Hara_ the protagonist and the remarkable meaning hidden within it.

Literature, an invisible world created by the infinite imagination of the writers, is where you can meet all kinds of people that could make your heart quivers intensely. Those characters reflect life in a truthful way, and they also show us the deep experiences and the desperate desires in life. “Gone with the wind”_ the famous literary classics, poytrayed excellently the pictures of the contemporary society and the women in the 19th century in a way that no one had ever done before through the charming and frenetic Scarlett O’Hara. Scarlett O’Hara is highlighted character of the whole story, although she was a character who embodies all of the negative stereotypes attributed to women throughout history. She is narcissistic, shallow, dishonest, manipulative, amoral. At the beginning of the story, Scarlett was described to be self-centered, and spoiled by her wealthy parents. Scarlett is very intelligent, despite her fashionable Southern-belle pretense at ignorance and helplessness around men. She is somewhat unique among Southern women. This, somehow, can be seen in the line: “The green eyes in the carefully sweet face were turbulent, willful, lusty with life, distinctly at variance with her decorous demeanor”. Unlike the traditional stereotyped Southern woman, Scarlett is a the one who is incapable of being a good wife, a loving mother, a caring sister, or a true friend. She is not a good wife_ she dances with Rhett Butler at a charity event when she is still in mourning after her first husband's death. She is not a loving mother_ Scarlett has a child with each husband, but her selfish nature precludes her from ever becoming a loving mother; "She had very little interest in Wade," her first child, "and sometimes it was difficult to remember that he actually was hers”. She is not a caring sister_ she seduces and marries her sister’s fiance, Frank Kennedy. And she is not a true friend_ Scarlett still try to make Ashley love her even when Ashley is Melanie’s husband, in spite of the fact that Melanie treats Scarlett more than just a friend but like her own sister. Scarlett is stubborn, ruthless and energetic. She is not afraid to whatever it takes to get what she need. And once Scarlett decided, there is nothing on Earth can stop her. Unlike other idealized female characters in novels, Scarlett is lively, full of energy and clinging to the family’s plantation Tara to exist. That is what make her one of the most attractive enternal monument of the world literature. The Civil War sweeps away the aura of the past and the Southern society falls into ruin. Scarlett shoulders the family’s reponsiblilities and start from scratch. Scarlett becomes money-conscious and more materialistic in her motivation to ensure that her family survives and Tara stays in her family, when others are losing their homes. And of course, she needs the help from the men with lots of money. Beginning with Rhett Butler, a rich man whom she hates, Scarlett visit him when he is in prison to borrow money by offering herself first in marriage and then, in exchange for the tax money but Rhett refuses even this last humiliating offer to sell her body to him. Scarlett immidiately does not hesitate stealing her sister's fiance. Because her personality and ambitions, Scarlett O’Hara goes against the social rules, and tarnish the image of the beautiful women of that time. But no one can ever deny that Scarlett has strong personality that women always long to have. Hidden inside her is a strong will, a strong will to survive and to achieve anything she wants. The story ended with the image of the resilient Scarlett standing ahead Tara: “After all, tomorrow is another day!". As can be seen in the story, Scarlett’s development precisely mirrors the development of the South. She changes from a spoiled girl to a hard-working widow and then to the wealthy opportunist, reflecting the South’s change from leisure society to besieged nation to compromised survivor. Scarlett embodies both Old and New South. “Gone with the wind” has always been one of the most successful and famous novel by great values hidden within it. The meaning of the novel is more than just a regular love story, it is a lesson to be learnt. It is the fortitude to survive, the fortitude to protect the dearest. “Gone with the wind” is the combination of many realistic problems in the lives of the American people that took place in the Civil War and its aftermath. And then from the crumbling ground, people ,one way or another, still nurture the desire to live, to rise and to find their own happiness.

“Gone with the wind” is a classic novel of world literature, is a work worth reading for readers of all kinds. With the female character_ Scarlett O’Hara, Margaret Mitchell had created a new image of women in the 19th century, the women who had dreams and had the dare to make it come true. This somehow could be an inspriration to everyone. It inspires readers to learn to survive under the harshest of circumstances, to never give up on fate and above all . This is the true value of “Gone with the wind” _ a novel will forever live in the hearts of the readers.

...Gone With the Wind ENG 225 Gone With the Wind Gone with the Wind is a movie its own rarity. It is one of the few movies that has stood the test of time and remains a classic that cannot be compared to some of today’s movies. I doubt the screenplay writer, Sidney Howard, producer, David O. Selznick, and director, Victor Fleming knew what timeless piece of history they were creating when this movie completed. This masterpiece of film has had an impact on viewers ever since it was created and will have for many more. The movie was nominated for numerous awards at the 1939 Academy Awards even though it wasn’t released until January 1940. The movie ran away with eight of those nominations, winning Supporting Actress, Actress, Director, Screenplay, Color Cinematography, Art Direction, Editing, and Best Picture (Ten Films that Shook the World). It has been said that if the income for the movie was adjusted for inflation, it would be the most successful movie of all time. The films begins with the chronicling of the splendor of the Old South. We watch how it is reduced to crumbs by the Civil War and the how the New South rebuilds itself during the reconstruction. The final results makes one wonder if the Auteur Theory applies to this film which says that the director is the one with the overall films artistic merit. The characters are living their lives in a very simple way until everything is shattered by the Civil War. None of the characters expected the devastation...

...of hand but it’s something that we need to change in society. Everyone should be treated equally. People are born a certain race and they cannot change that. Just because someone is a certain race people need to respect the person for who they are and not judge them based on their race. There is a Bavarian saying that they live by “Mia San Mia” which stands for we are who we are and they live their lives by that and respect each other. That’s something that is not seen in the United States. Birth of a Nation, Gone with the Wind, Burn!, and Spartacus are a good representation of how America’s view on slavery and the mixing of races changed over time. Birth of a Nation was made in 1915 when segregation was still huge in American society. Burn! was made in 1969 which was right after the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was passed. It’s a big time frame to look at but it gave a good understanding on how viewpoints changed over time. The films Birth of a Nation and Gone with the wind were made 25 years apart and mainly took place during the reconstruction period after the civil war. But they both presented different viewpoints on the issues. The first main theme brought up in Birth of a Nation was the mixing of races. In the opening scene the film African-Americans are coming to America and being sold to whites as slaves. During that scene a text...

She searches for men’s attention. She is used to men asking her to marry her but she has found the only one who is Ashley. The problem is that Ashley now is together with Melanie. It makes Scarlett really jealous, but she has a plan. When Charles Hamilton asks her to marry her she considers it so she can use the marriage to make Ashley jealous. ...Gone with the wind Mom I don’t want to drink milk, I don’t like it. Honey just try it today, it is not that bad. Mom you always say this (while drinking milk). That’s my boy, love you my baby now go get your bag, you’ll get late for the school. Your van is going to be here any minute. (Van horn) Oh look it’s here already. Hurry up you always makes him to wait. A very usual morning for every mom and the same tantrums of the kids, who knew the noon would be so deadly and bloodthirsty. It was 16th Dec, 2014, a very bright and sunny morning and evenly baleful and pathetic afternoon. The sounds of joy and cheers were drastically transformed to moan and groan. Who knew the children that went to school in the morning in their neat and clean uniforms will return to their homes, with the same uniforms drenched in blood. Pakistan has been in a war against terror for a long time, seems like forever and among all of the terrorist attacks, the one on the Army Public school in Peshawar, was the deadliest slaughter of innocent souls. The blind eyes of the terrorists can’t even see that the bullets they are firing are getting across the bodies of those children who may not even know the meaning of war and terror. The upshots of that attack have been felt from that day till this moment and will be felt by the parents and families of those souls till their last breath. What was the sin of those people that they got a death like that, that they had to be separated from their loved ones in such...

The novel follows Scarlett O’Hara, a spoiled sixteen year old just before the start of the Civil War through the war and Reconstruction (1861-1870). Major themes throughout the novel are: The importance of land; love of money; survival; wanting what you cannot have; and the change of a culture (Mitchell, 1936). Scarlett’s life revolved around the parties she would attend at neighboring plantations, flirting with the young men of the county and pursuing her childhood crush, Ashley Wilkes. Scarlett was a spoiled. In 1860 sixteen year old Scarlett O’Hara lived on Tara, her father’s plantation in Georgia. She is self-centered girl who seemed to care little for the feelings of others and who was used to getting everything she wanted. Her father, Gerald was an Irish immigrant who had prospered in his new land. Her mother, Ellen was from an aristocratic French family. Scarlett had two sisters, Suellen and Careen to whom she paid little mind. Mammy was Ellen’s house servant and the girl’s nanny. Mammy was always concerned that the girls be proper ladies like their mother. The O’Hara plantation had many slaves and was prosperous (Mitchell, 1936). Accurate Perceptions on Race Relations and Gender Roles “Gone with the Wind”

...Mahmoud Mandour Mrs. Kuhl English Lang. and Lit. 25th February 2013 Rational I chose to write a movie review, as a critic pointing out the inaccurate depictions made through characters in the movie, ‘Gone With The Wind”. What motivated me to do this, is that it is difficult to criticize movies as successful as this. So, I wrote this as a critic pointing out some huge flaws in the portrayals made through the movie’s characters, rather than focus on the story plot, like other movie reviews. The audience I target for this critique, is any “GWTW” fan that thinks this movie is flawless. This written task is intended to focus on part 1 of the course, as language in this movie is used in different contexts to portray race relations and gender roles in a certain society at the time the movie was set. The tone used in the very title of the article is humorous and a bit exaggerated, as I make a pun by using the name of the movie in making a point about how this movie abolishes accurate perceptions on the nature of the confederate states. The first half of the introduction is stated in an admiring tone, as I praise the movie’s success with sentences like; “ leaving viewers with a warm feeling towards a great story that was beautifully told.” I then shift to a rather aggressive tone, as I directly point out the issues in the movie. As for the rest of the article, the tone is strictly formal and informative, as I elaborate on the introduction. I made sure to stick...

...Short Essays 1) Describe the three basic types of music heard in original scores during the silent film era and cites specific examples from The Birth of a Nation. (10 points) There are three basic types of music heard in The Birth of a Nation. Each type serves it’s own purpose in the film. The first is adaptations of classical works. These adaptations are extended versions of the original classical piece of work. These adaptations are used for extensive action scenes. For example, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyrie is the leitmotif for the Klu Klux Klan in the movie. The second type is arrangements of well-known melodies. These well-known melodies are used for emotional appeal. For example, “Dixie”, a very popular song of the South, is used to express Southern patriotism. Also, these well-known melodies were used to set a racist mood. A scene shows slaves dancing to “Turkey in the Straw”. Lastly, the third type is original music. The original music is used to reinforce the characters of the movie. For example, Elsie has a sweet, playful leitmotif. This theme implies her innocence. The original music in The Birth of a Nation is the strongest of the three types, composed by Joseph Carl Briel. 2) What is the role of source music in Casablanca? ...Introduction In today’s world it’s our responsibility as the population to create Sustainability with the earth’s resources. There are only so many resources on earth like timber, food, petroleum etc. to go around. The more that we use and take in the less it becomes available for us to consume. The world’s budget cannot indeterminately increase on a limited world. As a result the economy develops and the population grows it’s almost impossible for all natural resources not to be exhausted. This then results to high prices, and the people specifically the poor and our impending generations no matter, social economic status will suffer. Therefore, conservation needs to take action. When you are talking about waste in the sense of timber it is not usually used as an economic term (http://www.foresthistory.org/ASPNET). Meaning that it really does not harm our earth except for the emissions put out from logging and transporting the timber, other than that there really is no waste coming from timber in a pollution sense. Although there is a massive problem with our society just wasting parts of these resources’ even though there is such a huge demand for timber in our world today. In the wake of this reality practices such as wood recycling or timber recycling have become more of a necessity than anything else. Wood recycling is the practice of turning wood waste into some kind of usable product. For instance some waste wood is chipped and mulched and used to help power homes...

Waste and Energy Paper

...Waste and Energy Paper Team A ENV 100 February 13, 2012 Instructor - Onesimus Otieno Waste and Energy Paper Oil is formed when large quantities of dead organisms, usually zooplankton and algae, are buried underneath sedimentary rock and undergo intense heat and pressure. Petroleum is recovered mostly through oil drilling. Oil is then refined and separated into different products – such as gases, jet fuel, heating oil, diesel, and asphalt. Oil is also used to make petrochemicals, compounds used to make products such as fertilizers, plastics, paints, pesticides, medicines, and synthetic fibers (Berg & Hager, 2009). Most environmental problems associated with oil are caused by burning and transporting it. Burning oil produces carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas, so it contributes to global warming. It can also lead to acid deposition because the combustion of oil is the leading cause of nitrogen oxides. Nitrogen oxides inhibit plant growth and they are involved in photochemical smog and acid deposition (Berg & Hager, 2009). They can also lead to acidification of soils, affecting the plant varieties that are able to grow in the soil. This leads to a decrease of diversity in the environment. Plants that cannot handle acidic soils die off. In turn, animal species in the area decrease as only the species that can live off of those particular plants will thrive. Others will move on to new areas looking for plants that they have become accustomed to. Another...
