The NETT Day session Google in the social space was very interesting. Amy Korin and Ashley Lepczyk explained the importance and advances made in using social media. Before the session I heard of google +, but was not familiar with all the features it had to offer. Ashley and Amy went into some detail by explaining how google + has put in place circles that allow the user to separate different groups within each circle. This is useful because it allows for more control of how the user can share information. Furthermore, during the session Amy explained that by correctly utilizing social media companies can increase their target markets and overall sales.
Google is by the far the most used search engine, and allows its user to find information on practically any subject or issue. However during the session there were some questions regarding Google’s policy of determining what should be allowed on the site and what shouldn’t. Google has a well-known policy of don’t be evil, and to not share the user’s information without his or her consent.
The video of Islamic prophet Muhammad created a lot of controversy because some people believed it was a hateful attack and undermined their religion, while others wanted the video to remain because they believed if it didn’t there rights of free speech were being violated. Ultimately Google kept the video up. According to Amy Google provides the desired information, but it is up to the user to use the information in a responsible, respectful manner. Overall I agree with Google’s censorship policy and although at times mistakes may happen it’s better to have access to information to form your own conclusions rather than have someone form them for you.

Google has poured tons of money into years of development with several projects to mimic Facebook. Google has once again begun the implementation of a new social media website called Google+. Google+ is Google’s fourth attempt at mimicking Facebook’s social media website. Another powerhouse in social media is Twitter. Twitter currently has 300 million users. Before getting into the competitors of this industry, one must know how each social media network makes revenue. Since all of these companies do not force people to pay a premium in order to gain a membership they must find an alternate way of generating money. There are two ways these companies make money, investors and IPO’s, ads, and premiums from satellite companies. For example, Facebook is able to charge companies likes Zynga a 30% charge of all virtual purchases done on their game from allowing Zynga the ability to put their game on Facebook’s platform. Mainly these companies form money from companies who wish to display ads for their companies on people’s sidebars of their profile. This is mainly...

How Social Media Makes Society

...How Social Media Makes Society Let us take a trip into digital cyberspace and see what we will find. It is a never ending wonderland of bytes of data never before seen by men of different walks of life. Yes, dear reader, we can discover a whole new world in this digital frontier. However, is it worth it to venture the digital landscape if we could find out everything we ever needed to know on the social media landscape? Yes, it is. And in the end, it may be better to find out information outside of social media since social media leads to a possibility of spreading false information, a lack of privacy in one’s daily life, and a facilitation of endangering children through harmful social media sites. All in all, Social Media is more likely to do more evil for the society than it does justice. Forms of digital communication over the internet, such as social media, have become increasingly popular in information transmission since the dawn of the internet in the 1960s (Museum of Science and Industry). Today as of 2013, over 50% of people worldwide receive their information over common social media mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube (Kidwali and Imperatore). Mediums such as radio, television, and print publication have slowly dropped in use. Incorporate items from the articles as well as your own ideas. Strengths: It is Google’s efficient and effective user friendly interface, and the output of impeccably accurate results, that makes the company the frontrunners of the global search engine market. The company constantly updates and upgrades its technology and search algorithms to produce the best results possible. In 2001, Google implemented image search capabilities, which has come to expand to include the capability of searching for videos, news data, documents, books, and many other forms of “rich data”. With the launch of Google Instant in 2010, a program that predicts a user’s search query based on what they are typing, Google further enhanced the efficiency of the user’s search experience. Their position as the leading global internet database is further reinforced by their ability to produce results in various languages, and output localized search results. Furthermore, the fact that Google’s employees are required to spend 20% of their time developing their own projects acts as a perpetual catalyst to innovation--which always keeps the company one step ahead of their competitors. Weaknesses: Google relies primarily on advertisements as the source of their revenue. The problem with this is that advertisers’ spending patterns reflect...
