In middle school you see bullies, jock, nerds, and wanna-be’s but not a hippie usually, but in the book, Schooled, by Gordan Korman, the main character, Capricorn Anderson, is a hippie that changes many times during the book. Capricorn (Cap) is a thirteen year old who lives on an alternative farm commune with his grandmother, Rain. Rain falls out of a plum tree, breaks her hip and has to go to hospital rehab. Cap is forced to go live in foster care at Mrs. Donnelly’s house, which means he has to go to Claverage Middle School (called C Average by its students.) He was homeschooled by Rain and that makes him different from most other children. He doesn't understand middle school life because he’s never lived anywhere else except Garland Farms. As a result, Cap is clueless about the world outside of Garland Farms.
When he arrives at C Average Middle School, Cap is uncomfortable. He is confused about class periods and doesn’t know what lockers are used for. Cap tells Rain, “It’s too crowded. People dress funny; they talk too fast.” He tells her he’s kind of scared and he’s horrified at seeing physical violence. Students at…show more content… Cap says, “My mind kept wandering back to the hallways of C Average Middle School-the crash of locker doors, the babble of excited conversation.” Lena, Naomi and the rest are worried about Cap because Cap gets hurt two times in a row. The first time he gets tricked and the football team tackles him. The second time he get punched in the nose while he is peacefully breaking up a fight. He leaves C-Average school to go back to Garland Farms with Rain. Many people think that he died and they are upset. They like him now and miss him. Lena said “some of us appreciate how he devoted his heart and soul to the school. Cap and his classmates feel different about each other at the end of the book, Schooled. They admire Cap now and he starts understanding
