To build a successful Career except the personal qualities required, it’s a very important in which company or organization this leader will be able to achieve its success.
Therefore I would like to tell first some more words for the history and success of Continental Airlines – a major U.S. airline headquartered in Huston, Texas * In 1934: “Varney Speed Lines” was founded.The beginnings of Continental Airlines started in 1934, when Walter Varney founded an airline company that he named Varney Speed Lines. . * 1937: After 3 years a young an entrepreneur Robert Six's bought 40% of the company for $90,000 $ That investment was used mainly to pay debts that Varney had accrued during the company's first three years. Robert Six led the company in changing its name from Varney Speed Lines to Continental Airlines, contending that the young airline would never be successful with a name like "Varney." Robert Six led the company in the years of the Second World War, After the war period, during the economy expansion in 60 and 70 years in US and retired after 45 years leading the company. We could say in a period of rapid Expansion. * 1982: Texas Air Corporation acquires Continental Airlines - Robert Six retired on 74 years and gave his confidence to Texas Air Chairman Frank Lorenzo to carry Continental Airlines back into profitability again. Actually Frank Lorenzo had the luck to buy 58% of the Continental Airlines because of the rejected bank withdraw to Continental for buying another airline company. * 1983: Continental files 1st bankruptcy - after 1 year after its the first time that an airline had attempted to continue operations while in bankruptcy. To avoid the bad publicity and social oopinion, at that time Continental decided to offer a very cheap fare for any nonstop flight. The idea was to bring passengers aboard and let them see that the airline was capable of functioning as usual. The promotion was successful and the company continue to run the business. * 1986: Continental emerges from bankruptcy; Continental absorbs 3 smaller airlines company with bad financial results Eastern, People Express, and Frontier * 1990: Continental declares 2nd bankruptcy and again succeed to move forward but with poor financial results. * 1993: Continental regains solvency - underwent an extensive reorganization led by ex-Delta Airlines CEO - Hollis Harris * 1994: Gordon Bethune become a COO of the Continental and started the Golden years of the Continental Airlines – He set his "Go Forward Plan" to turn the ailing company around and to change the company from “’Bankruptcy” to “Win to fly” * 1995: Continental Airlines earns its first profit in ten years - “Fly to Win" initiatives were introduced to keep the company moving forward in the next 10 years * 1996 – Only 3 years after its 2nd bankruptcy Continental logged a record $319 million in earnings following the Gordon’s “Forward Plan”
Continental again embarked on a program to expand its international flights (more than 200 destinations). During that time Continental went from being ranked last in every measurable performance category to winning more Associates awards for Customer Satisfaction than any other airline in the world
BusinessWeek magazine named Bethune one of the top 25 Global Managers in 1996 and 1997. Under his leadership Continental's stock price rose from $2 to over $50 per share.
Fortune named Continental among the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America for six years. In Gordon’s final year piloting the airline Fortune magazine ranked Continental 2004's No. 1 Most Admired Global Airline * 2001 - Scaling back in 2011 - But in 9 11 was the biggest and unexpected crisis in US aircraft industry Continental was the first among major U.S. airlines to cut its staff with more 12,000 employees (more than 20 percent of the workforce) Gordon Bethune took a major role during that period leading Continental and participate actively in negotiations with US Government * 2002 In 2002, Continental, Delta, and Northwest proposed a massive ten-year code-share agreement. It’s a key achievement of the company - The alliance was created to response of the competition of United and US Airways.
2004 – Bethune announced his retirement at the end of the 2004 year
The following years are years in which CA succeed to keep its market positions and earnings, but the things changed during the Financial Crisis in 2008 * 2010 – the Airline announced the merge with United Airlines, stock swap for over 3 billion USD. During the integration period, each airline ran a separate operation under the direction of a combined leadership team, based in Chicago, Illinois. * 2012 –the name of the new carrier is United Airlines with logo of Continental and that’s the end of the story of 78 years History of Continental Airlines.
During these years, almost a century of Continental Airlines. We could say that the most successful period of the company if we count – earnings, number of customers and employees’ satisfaction is the 10th years of Gordon Bethune.

After all we said about Gordon being a great person, leader, colleague, what we could expect he is doing nowadays?
He is retired old man, famous and with big heart to enjoy everything he achieved in his life. Hi is separated with his wife, with three grown-up children and younger and beautiful girlfriend Jessica Rosman. I honestly could say that they both enjoyed being celebrities

Collects clocks and watches He has commercial flying Certificate - Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft
A observed that an important way to achieve success is to motivate others to aid success. That means, he said, that a manager receiving an award must make clear that the accomplishment for which he's being honored was mostly the result of the hard work of others. "
Gordon Bethune is a character. After all we could say that he is one of the most accomplished American business leaders of the past few decades.
