Goro Yoshida was a Japanese man from Hiroshima, born in 1900, known as the creator of the Canon camera company. His goal in creating this business was to create good quality and affordable cameras for the everyday hobbyist and professional photographer. Quality cameras during this time period were very expensive, so photography was not a booming business. This was Yoshida’s main motivation. He believed that the leading camera companies were overpricing their products and it was unfair to the customers and the photography community. Photography is an amazing art form which all people deserve to have access to.
It all started in 1934. The leading camera company was a german company called Leica, with prices ranging up to $700. Yoshida’s career involved repairing film cameras and projectors, and he decided to take apart a Leica camera and observe what the item is made of. He found that, Leica was using extremely cheap materials to manufacture their cameras; brass, aluminum, copper and rubber. And they were selling them for high-end prices, although they were no better than a cheap film camera the average person might own. This discovery both angered him and inspired him.
