MASSIVE DRIVE AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS LAUNCHED IN BATAAN
WRITTEN BY HTTP://WWW.PIA.GOV.PH/.
BALANGA CITY, Bataan August 22 (PIA) -- The Provincial Coordinating Committee on the eradication of tuberculosis recently launched a massive campaign against the killer disease in Bataan with the aim of at least detecting 70 percent of those afflicted and curing 85 percent of those detected.

The program is under government's Public Private Mix DOTS or the partnership of both public and private stakeholders on Directly - Observed Strategy on Short Course Therapy (DOTS). It has the battlecry "You are the cure of tuberculosis."

Dr. Rosanna Buccahan, PCC Bataan chair and Provincial health office chief, explained that "public" refers to rural health units and government hospitals and doctors while "private" involves non-governmental organizations, teachers, private hospitals, and private doctors.

She said that under the program, there will be no competition between private and public physicians but the involvement of all in the attainment of the country's millennium goal by 2015 of curing at least one-half of TB cases in the Philippines.

Ameia Sarmiento, executive director of the Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis, said studies show that there are 133 TB cases per 100,000 population in the country. The countrywide target is to have a detection rate of only 70 percent of 133 cases per 100,000 people.

She said that the nationwide target has been attained but there are still some provinces that are below the objective. She pointed to lack of awareness as the cause despite the free medicines and free sputum examination offered.

"Nahihiya ang iba na amining may tuberculosis kaya kailangan ang tulong ng bawat isa," Sarmiento said. "TB is everywhere and the solution is to cure together to address the common problem so that in years to come, there will be no one to cure," she added.

Dr. Virgilio Vinluan and Dr. Alejandro Menardo, top internist and pediatrician, respectively, shared their experiences and observation that some patients stop medication after two or four months but returned one or two years later with tuberculosis again.

Full continuous treatment for six months is required for TB to be cured.

The doctors suggested that not only full medication be given free but also assistance for food be given to poor patients. "Hindi lang gamot kundi dapat tumaas din ang resistansiya ng mga pasyente para gumaling," Menardo said, adding "give incentive of whatever form to encourage others to be treated."

"Ma-detect lang ang 70 porsiyento at ma-gamot ang 85 porsiyento, ito ang target natin," said Dr. Rio Magpantay, Region 3 director of the Department of Health. "Sana bawat makaramdam ng TB ay huwag mahiyang pumunta sa RHU," the director said.

He posed the following questions: "Bakit hanggang ngayon may TB? Bakit ang tagal-tagal ng problema ito? Nasaan ba problema? Bakit nahihiyang aminin na may TB ang isang tao?" Magpantay concluded his message with "Sino ba ako sa TB?" and asked every one's participation.

Stakeholders composed of provincial and municipal officials, private and government physicians, nurses, barangay health workers, officials of the Department of Education, teachers, and representatives of NGOs were among those who signed the memorandum of understanding.

All the participants later signed a manifesto of support for the program. Mayors Jose Enrique Garcia III of Balanga, Carlos Pizarro Jr. of Pilar, and Jesse Concepcion of Mariveles pledged full support to the project. (CLJD-PIA 3/Balanga CIO)

...Reaction paper (El Presidente 2012) “El Presidente” movie brought into life the story of the first president of the Republic of the Philippines, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. It is not a film for all Filipinos but only for those who have high regard to Philippine Independence. If you are Andres Bonifacio fanatic, this is not for you. Members of the Bonifacio clan might be of total outrage right now for the film has put Bonifacio in somewhat a ‘bad light. Directed by Mark Meily, “El Presidente” offers a beautiful journey back to history with great action scenes and cinematography. The lines, in Filipino, Spanish, and English are well-thought. Casting big names in Philippine showbiz like Cesar Montano, Christopher De Leon, Allan Paule, Sid Lucero, and Joko Diaz, among others was a good move as they portrayed their roles excellently. Montano‘s portrayal as Bonifacio is believable and is deserving of his Metro Manila Film Festival Best Supporting Actor award though those who have watched him portrayed Jose Rizal might have a hard time picturing him as Bonifacio. Having comedian Bayani Agbayani in the cast is okay, just that his mustache looks funny. The same goes with the other cast who wear funny looking mustaches. The lead actor, George ‘E.R Ejercito’ Estregan, Jr., portrayed Aguinaldo’s character very well though it is hard to believe that it was really him portraying the lead for the film he produced. There’s nothing wrong with that if it’s just for the sake of arts or even if it...

The Wolf Creek Dam is located in south central Kentucky on the Cumberland River. Design and construction started in 1938 and was completed in 1952. Lake Cumberland was created by the dam, it is the largest reservoir east of the Mississippi River, and the ninth largest in the United States. In 1968, muddy flows in the tailrace and two sinkholes found in the embankment, indicated a severe seepage problem. From 1968 to 1970, a grouting project was started, this saved the dam, but was...

...Chapter 10 SOCIO-CULTURAL EVALUATION 1. Importance of Socio-Cultural Evaluation The socio-cultural resources of Central Luzon are potential resource-assets for tourism development. These resource-assets has great tourism application that can generate community-based livelihood and employment opportunities. The sociocultural resources include the traditional communities, archaeological and historical sites, festivals, indigenous arts and crafts, cuisine, myths and legends, as well as folklores and oral history. These resource-assets represent the country's heritage that is reflective of the region's identity. Promotions of socio-cultural resources for tourism purposes will require an extensive and meticulous evaluation because of the possible "over-exposures" that these cultural assets will have to withstand. Socio-cultural evaluation identifies the tourism potentials of these resource-assets with relevance to the environmental and cultural settings of the host communities. It also identifies the existing and perceived impacts of tourism to these socio-cultural assets and to devise appropriate mitigative measures and management plans to protect and better enhance cultural heritage for tourism development. The need to promote the cultural heritage of the Central Luzon region in the tourism industry should be balanced with the need to preserve and conserve the sociocultural integrity of these resources. The implications of tourism...

...Philippine independence, a decision was made to establish a U. S. Naval Base at Subic Bay. Much of the area now occupied by the Freeport was previously occupied by the City of Olongapo. At that time, the Commander of the Naval Base was also in control of the City of Olongapo. During the Vietnam Conflict, construction of the facilities was again accelerated, and with the expansion of the Seventh Fleet, Subic Bay became the busiest port in the Western Pacific. In February 1979, the Military Bases Agreement transferred control of the U. S. Naval Base, Subic Bay to the Philippine government. The Agreement expired in September 1991. ...JAPANESE MANAGEMENT Key practices commonly associated with Japanese management techniques include: * in-house training of managers * consensual and decentralized decision-making * extensive use of quality control methods * carefully codified work standards * emphasis on creating harmonious relations among workers * lifetime employment and seniority-based compensation Japanese management philosophy and techniques Nihonteki Keiei, or Japanese-style management, has become a popular phrase in the west. It refers to what people see as substantially different between Japanese management techniques and those widely practiced in the other countries. The differences often cited are: lifetime employment, job rotation, based seniority wage and promotion system, Ringi and consensus decision-making, just in time, quality circles, kaizen, and the suggestion system. Most of these techniques have become well known across the world. However, a successful implementation by western firms requires a critical understanding of their basic principles and operations, while some of the elements need to be critically assessed in the light of the structural problems of the Japanese economy since 1989. Lifetime employment (shushinkoyo) the main objective of offering lifetime employment or a job for life is to provide workers with a sense of security and identity. Once recruited, lifetime employees become members of the corporate family, which will have to take care of them for...

Alternative Medicines

...Alternative Medicine in the Philippines And Its Continued Popularity: A Study Bataan Peninsula State University Alternative Medicine in the Philippines And Its Continued Popularity The Philippines is one of the islands that were conquered by different countries back in the day. That is why a lot of foreign influences were brought up by those colonizations. One of them is alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is a variety of therapeutic or preventive health-care practices that are not typically taught or practiced in traditional medicinal communities and offer treatments that differ from standard medical practice. Homeopathy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture are types of alternative medicine. In particular, China was one of the countries that inhabited the Philippines. China and its traditional healing arts make up the integral part of Chinese culture. According to “The Practice of Shiatsu” (Anderson, 2008), acupuncture gradually took over in China as the primary form of medicine and traveled across Asia including the Philippines. As evidenced by the years of trade by the Philippines with China, the Philippines then inherit the traditional ways of healing through acupuncture that China practiced and it is still being practiced today. Alternative medicine was already popular back in history but it is taking popularity again nowadays. In order to understand what we know today, people go back to their roots and to the beginning of civilization. What we know...

...Fernando Amorsolo was born May 30, 1892, in the Paco district of Manila. At 13 he was apprenticed to the noted Philippine artist Fabian de la Rosa, his mother's first cousin. In 1909 Amorsolo enrolled at the Liceo de Manila and then attended the fine-arts school at the University of the Philippines, graduating in 1914. After working three years as a commercial artist and part-time instructor at the university, he studied at the Escuela de San Fernando in Madrid. For seven months he sketched at the museums and on the streets of Madrid, experimenting with the use of light and color. That winter he went to New York and discovered the works of the postwar impressionists and cubists, who became the major influence on his works. On his return to Manila, he set up his own studio. During this period, Amorsolo developed the use of light--actually, backlight--which is his greatest contribution to Philippine painting. Characteristically, an Amorsolo painting contains a glow against which the figures are outlined, and at one point of the canvas there is generally a burst of light that highlights the smallest detail. During the 1920s and 1930s Amorsolo's output of paintings was prodigious. In 1939 his oil Afternoon Meal of the Workers won first prize at the New York World's Fair. During World War II Amorsolo continued to paint. The Philippine collector Don Alfonso Ongpin commissioned him to execute a portrait in absentia of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, which he did at great personal risk. He...
