...COCA-COLA SETTLES RACIAL BIAS CASE http://www.nytimes.com/2000/11/17/business/coca-cola-settles-racial-bias-case.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm By GREG WINTER Published: November 17, 2000 In the largest settlement ever in a racial discrimination case, the Coca-Cola Company agreed yesterday to pay more than $156 million to resolve a federal lawsuit brought by black employees. The settlement also mandates that the company make sweeping changes, costing an additional $36 million, and grants broad monitoring powers to a panel of outsiders -- an unusual concession in employment discrimination cases. The lawsuit, filed in April 1999, accused Coke of erecting a corporate hierarchy in which black employees were clustered at the bottom of the pay scale, averaging $26,000 a year less than white workers. As redress, the settlement provides as many as 2,000 current and former black salaried employees with an average of $40,000 in cash, while the four plaintiffs whose names are on the lawsuit will receive up to $300,000 apiece. ''There's going to be fundamental change at the Coca-Cola Company,'' said Kimberly Gray Orton, a plaintiff who worked for Coca-Cola for 13 years and who says that she made less than the white workers she supervised. ''A lot like a rock in a pond, there are going to be ripples.'' Perhaps more surprising than its size, the settlement gives an outside panel, appointed by Coke and the plaintiffs' lawyers, limited authority to revise company personnel policy, a...

...In the late 90’s my brother called me, he designed computer chips for Hewlett Packard. He wanted to know if I had received a package that day from him. I stated no I had not, he said to please call him when it arrives. Later that afternoon, the UPS man delivery a huge package to my door. In opening this large box I discover a Gateway desktop PC system. I made a quick call to my brother, I remember the conversation going something like this! Why did you send me a computer? What I am to do what with it? My brother laughed, and stated it was time for his sister to catch up to the 20th century. He talked me through how to set it up and turn it on. His advice was “play with it, use it and call me if you crash it”. A year later, and after several crashes, I brought my first new computer. My love for how they made everything easier, the things they can do and the things I can creative with one. The spark was ignited, I do everything I can using my computer. ...Leadership, Ethics and Corporate Governance In order to identify the definition of a leader, one must first define an accurate representation of the meaning of leadership. There are many ways to define leadership. For example, Webster’s dictionary defines leadership as, “1. The office, position or function of a leader, and 2. The quality of character and personality giving a person’s ability to gain confidence of, and lead others,” While this definition presents an accurate meaning of the word leadership, it greatly lacks the detail in truly defining the meaning of leadership. “There are many ways to define leadership. In fact, there are almost as many different definitions of leadership as they are people have tried to define it" (Stogdill, 1974, p. 7). The definition of leadership has evolved over the years, for example in the early 1900s, leadership was defined as, “the ability to impress the will of the leader of those who lead and induce obedience, respect, loyalty, and cooperation” (Moore, 1927). Today, leadership scholars agree that there is not a single common definition for leadership (Rost, 1991). The process of leadership is the interaction conducted between the leader and the followers whereby the leader influences a group of followers to achieve a common goal. Leadership and management are not synonymous. In numerous ways, leadership is a process similar to management. Both leadership and management involve influence, working with people, and effective goal accomplishments...

...Introduction McCrimmon introduces a new form leadership in which it is designed to enhance a person’s success called “Thought Leadership.” Thought leadership can be defined as one that can enable someone to think differently. He argues how much more differently thought leadership differs from distributed leadership and shared leadership. Goleman argues the science behind the human using emotional intelligence in everyday life. In the beginning Goleman writes he was enjoying an evening with his wife and describing the scenic route as they were driving home in the wet weather conditions and noticed someone begging for money that happens to be missing both of their legs. With kindness he gave the person five dollars and as he drove away it happened to blow away into the street. As he was driving away, another car which happened to be behind him stopped and picked up the money and gave it back to the person in the wheelchair. After reading his article he recognizes that the person who stopped is a leader who recognized a problem and used his emotions to solve the problem. He talks about the human emotions. He talks about the limbic system; which has a key assembly the “Amygdala” is placed around the brain holds that grasps the humans’ emotional memories. The Amygdala serves as a transmitter to the Thalamus which processes the sensory information in your brain. In his argument he references the dimensions of human emotion which can be used for a specific capability...

...We learn to distinguish colors such as green from yellow, objects hat are food from those that are “not to eat” and things that are for girls from things that are for boys. Soon we take the meanings of our classificatory system so much fro granted that we cease to question them. We believe that we perceive reality, even though, to a large extent, we are seeing only our cultures interpretation of it. A little boy needs to be taught that he cannot wear a pink ruffled tutu. Such outfits are arbitrarily classified as “feminine”, although there is nothing intrinsically feminine about them. Although children quickly learn to identify gender by clothing. E Not only do we construct and interpret the reality of the external world through the application of names and symbols but the same names and symbols gradually construct us. Social constructs also influence more profound matters of conduct, personality and intellect. To conform to a culture representation of femininity, women may thing of themselves as being- and act as thought they are “physically weak”, incapable of understanding electronics and preoccupied with getting married and having babies. If women are assumed to be incapable of learning mathematics, they will not be taught mathematics. -as children, we learn to view ourselves and to behave according to others perceptions and expectations of us. Cultures vary widely in their attribution of characteristics to femininity and masculinity. - Understandings about the...

...Graduation Day A lengthy four years of high school really set the stage for a great graduation. Graduating from high school became the single most important event in my life so far. Being a part of Wake Forest-Rolesville’s 2011 graduating class was a special moment. This moment is very significant to me because it was a long term goal that I had set out to accomplish, and I succeeded in doing so. Of course I felt accomplished after graduating high school, but I also realized many new doors would open for me. As a high school graduate I became eligible for higher education. Being able to attend college is essential for trying to achieve my life goals. Graduating from high school meant that I was just one step closer to achieving these life goals. A Painful Strand The death of my grandfather played a major role in my growth as a young man. His death did more than just show me that his time was up. I recall this experience being one of my most difficult. This was my first time ever witnessing death, seeing my father cry, and attending a funeral. Watching my grandfather pass away and my father cry were both very painful experiences. I had never planned nor prepared myself for anything like that. The pain and sadness that came along, transformed me into a cold hearted person. Taking on this new change required me to grow up much faster than planned. The growth took place because, I lost interest in many of the activities and trends a teenager might find attention-grabbing...

...Property Crimes Case Study # 49 Applied Managerial Statistics: GM533 Virginia Davis, Lauren Holder, Stanley Philip and Andrea Watson Executive Summary The Property Crimes study examined data provided by various U.S. government agencies on crime rates in the fifty U.S. states. Other data studied were eight possible contributing factors such as per capita income, high school dropout rate, average precipitation, population density, and urbanization. Analysis revealed, of the eight possible contributing factors, three of those variables (urbanization rate, high school dropout rate and population density) affected property crime rates. Of the given data, the model accounted for approximately 66% of the contributing factors associated with property crimes. Statistically, the data is generally considered to be strong, however, to account for the remaining 34% of factors contributing to property crime rates in the U.S., further data and evaluation of other possible factors would be necessary. Introduction Property crime, as defined by the U.S. Department of Justice (2011), is the taking of money or property without force or threat to victims and is inclusive of the following offenses: burglary; automotive theft, larceny and arson. An exception to the rule is arson, although it does not involve the taking of property, it does use force against victims. Additionally, crime is defined as an act of violence that is carried out by one or more individuals and can be toward another...

...Mr. Billings, the crisis brewing between the water products division and the solutions division requires careful consideration and a plan that addresses each aspect of the conflict. Within Stone Finch, the drivers of the recent rapid growth drain have severely threatened your company's long-term stability and sustainability, representing the paradox before you. To address this paradox, you must focus on rebuilding relationships within your organization. Healthy working relationships between employees within your company act as the cornerstone to success. Begin by emphasizing the importance of personal relationships within your organization (Whitener, & Stahl, 2004, 466), and addressing your employees' needs and concerns (Cohen & Bradford, 1989, 572). Together these actions will produce a virtuous spiral of success (Lawler, 2003, 587). In order to help Stone Finch, you must become a leader as a teacher and steward (Senge, 1990, 102), which points the way towards the vision that can bring the future paradox into the present (Nanus, 1996, 462). Having an appropriate vision allows you to see the actions taking place within the company, bringing change to improve the efficiency of your organization (Kotter and Cohen, 2002, 701). Employees usually respond positively to rewards based on certain tasks they complete. When talking about the proper ways of rewarding an employee you must know their preference of rewards (Kirkman & Hartog, 2004, 615). Additionally, employees must have the...

...It should come as no surprise that most applicants do not enjoy drafting their graduate admissions essay. Writing a statement that tells a graduate admissions committee all about you and can potentially make or break your application is stressful. Take a different perspective, however, and you will find that your admissions essay is what ensures that you match up with a graduate program that will offer you the training you need for the career you desire. Let's take a closer look at the graduate admissions essay. What is its Purpose? Your graduate school application provides the admissions committee with a great deal of information about you that cannot be found elsewhere in your graduate application. The other parts of your graduate school application tell the admissions committee about your grades (i.e., transcript), your academic promise (i.e., GRE scores), and what your professors think of you (i.e., recommendation letters). Despite all of this information, the admissions committee does not learn much about you as an individual. What are your goals? Why are you applying to graduate school? With so many applicants and so few slots it's critical that graduate admissions committees learn as much as possible about applicants so as to ensure that they choose students who best fit their program and are most likely to succeed and complete a graduate degree. Your admissions essay explains who you are, your goals, and the ways in which you match the graduate program to which you...

...One of the proudest accomplishments of my life was earning my college degree, despite the fact that my early adulthood pointed in the opposite direction, beginning with my marriage at the age of 19. Throughout the 1990s I lived as one of the "working poor," someone who slipped through the cracks of supposedly historic prosperity. By the age of 25 I was divorced and frustrated with menial, low - paying jobs: clerk, receptionist, and hou secleaner. There is nothing like scrubbing someone else's toilet to inspire one with determination toward obtaining an education. Because of my absolute commitment toward earning my degree, I got a flexible shift at a retail warehouse which enabled me to a cquire my degree while supporting myself financially. Enrolled at the local community college, I experienced a different world opening up to me; excited by a new encouraging environment, I excelled academically. I learned that if I tried hard, I could suc ceed; if I wanted something badly enough, I possessed the ability to take advantage of these opportunities. I worked a minimum 35 - hour workweek for five years to put myself through school without succumbing to the temptation of a student loan. I paid tuiti on up front with the money I earned. It was the example of my mother, a Puerto Rican immigrant working diligently to provide for her family, who instilled a work ethic into me that has stood me in good stead. With a lifelong passion for history, I have de veloped an interest in...
