Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success Twenty one years ago I started my nursing profession, which I do not regret any minute of it. Today I found myself back to college embarking a new journey pursuing MSN degree with much excitement and many challenges. In order to be successful in graduate study, I have to come up with strategies to overcome the anticipated challenges. The three main obstacles I face that would affect my study are writing, time management, and stress.
Reason
Health care industry has been evolved immensely over the past 10 to 15 years. When I graduated as a nurse 18 years ago, regular diploma or bachelor’s degree was what required. Health care professionals could advance career with clinical experiences. It is so different in our field now. The minimal requirement for higher managerial position is master’s degree. It requires not only the clinical skill and experience but also the management knowledge. I have great passion in my profession. I want to enrich my skill sets and qualification so that I can better prepare myself to serve the public and to move upward in my career ladder.
Short-term Goal Within the first month I will familiarize myself with available resources in OLS and maximally use what the university can provide me to flourish my learning experience.
Milestone. By the end of February, I will complete two writing workshops. I will follow each course syllabus closely to stay on top of weekly reading and assignment.
Long-term Goal My long-term goal is to finish the MSN degree with satisfactory academic score. I plan to graduate in two years. I cannot wait to go back to my field and serve the public with my new skill sets.
Milestone. By the end of June this year, I will finish all three required MSN bridge courses with satisfactory grade. The status bar indicating program progressing will show a steady

Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success HCS/504 August 6, 2012 John Dean Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success According to Linda Weston Kramer “Retuning to graduate school is a major decision in one’s professional life. Although there are many benefits to returning to school to earn a graduate degree, it is also very challenging” (Kramer, 2007, p. 158.). This essay discusses various challenges faced by graduate students, and strategies to overcome the challenges, from personal perspective. Personal and professional goals It is important to set personal and career goals before pursuing graduate study. Students need to discover the various courses offered, and select the one suit for them. This contributes a great deal of success because they choose what they want to, and where they want to reach. Goal setting and working toward achieving the goal is the key for success. My main long-term goal is career development. I want to complete my program within two years and find a job in Nursing/Informatics and go up in the ladder. When considering my short-term goal, I want to keep my GPA above 3.5, and acquire as much knowledge from this program by using the resources available. I want to improve my communication skills both written and verbal, and graduate study is the best platform for achieving that goal. It is important to prioritize the goals and choose the right path. Self-assessment and closely checking the measurable...

Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success

...Answering a Calling to Graduate Study: Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success Considering the pursuit of a graduate level education is a decision that should be well thought out. Success, whether academic or professional, is something desired by everyone at some point in life. It is important to decide carefully what goals one wants to accomplish and how a graduate degree will help. Once the goals are set, and the decision is made to go back to school, additional research and careful consideration is given in deciding what type of program to attend. There are basic considerations, including program and cost, but the future student should also consider that not all programs are created equal. Graduate study programs often have different objectives and focus (Kuther, PhD, 2013). It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that the program of choice matches his or her desired learning preferences. I knew I wanted to be a nurse from the time I started college, and it did not take long working in the field to determine that I was meant for health care management. My BSN and management ability has enabled me to work my way up to a senior management position, as the Chief Nursing Officer, at a rural hospital. I believe that by obtaining the MSN/MHA dual degree, doors will continue to open in health care administration.   For this reason, I have found my way back to school and I am a proud virtual student at University of Phoenix...

Three Challenges

...| Challenges of Graduate Studies | AJS 501 | | Richelle E Atkinson | 10/21/2012 | This paper explains three challenges that the student faces during their current graduate studies and list 3 strategies to overcome those challenges. | As a non-traditional graduate student I am sure to face challenges as I further my education and career, so attempting to accommodate a career, a child, and education is challenging for anyone. Amongst many challenges I face as a single mother in this difficult society obtaining my Masters degree has added different set of challenges to be face with one common goal to accomplish. The three challenges I believe I will face as a student during graduate studies includes being a single mother, holding a full time job, and being a student. The first challenge as a graduate student is my responsibilities as a single mother to an eleven year daughter and her busy schedule. My daughter is currently in the sixth grade in which she is at the age where she is attempting to figure out where she fits in the equation of adolescence. As a very protective mother it is my responsibility to guide my daughter and show her the love she deserves. As a juvenile probation officer, it is very difficult to overlook the society our children are being faced with. I experience daily situations of parents being unable to attend to their children due to their busy schedule whether it’s a full time job or other children within the household. Motherhood...

Graduate Study Challenges

...Mnguni HCS/504 November 19, 2012 Danielle Patrick The Expectancy Motivation and Self-Efficiency Value Fueled My Career Choice The decision to pursue graduate studies was not an overnight thought but a drawing board with careful planning and research. Career stagnancy and burnout was a major driving force fueled by motivation and commitment for self-actualization. According to Plunkett, Iwasiw, and Kerr (as cited in Eccles et al., 1983) Eccles et al. stated, the expectancy motivation value and self-efficiency are the determinants of career choices in college (Plunkett, Iwasiw, & Kerr, 2010). Expectancy motivation value is driven by the utility value, which is long-term usefulness of the task and intrinsic value, which is short-term value, whereas self-Efficiency stem from mastery of tasks and social persuasion (Plunkett, Iwasiw, & Kerr, 2010). The utility value, as displayed by my ambition to climb the clinical ladder will combat my career fatigue and burnout I have suffered in last few years. Lack of career advancement and development does not only affect the quality of nursing care but also patient satisfaction (Lorber and Skela, 2012). This goal will improve the quality of care I deliver to patients and self-esteem. My second long-term goal is acquisition of skills and knowledge needed for my field of study. Health care transformation to digital age, government mandated transition to paperless, and electronic medical record has opened a new market for nurse informatics...

Graduate Study Challenges

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success When deciding to return to graduate school, a person has made an excellent step in advantaging their knowledge in their particular career field. Before returning to graduate school, most people have given serious thought to the time commitment that they will have to face for the next two to four years. They have had many sleepless nights and day dreamed about the stress they will face to complete a graduate degree. Therefore entering a graduate program should not be taken lightly. In many disciplines it is required to have a graduate degree to practice independently in that career field (e.g. Social Worker and Psychologist). Nursing is now requiring nurses to have a graduate degree to advance into management positions. Employers are demanding their nurses to have more than just the knowledge to care for patients. They want the nurse who is placed in a management role to have the knowledge to be a leader. Nurses are returning to school to gain more knowledge in their career field, increase effective communication skills, have a higher potential for promotion, and to have a greater earning power. When deciding to return to graduate school, a student must have a strategy that is going to get them through the next two-four challenging years of their life. Knowledge Management

...Successful Transitions: Beginning Graduate Studies Many students find the shift from undergraduate to graduate studies to be more challenging and therefore more surprising than the transition they experienced when they moved from high school to university. There is more reading, more lab time, and more writing. The ideas, discussions, and questions are at a higher level. There’s a reason that not everyone does this! Entering your studies with a clear purpose and sense of direction, informed by a thorough understanding of new responsibilities and expectations, can help you to adapt better to the new demands of Masters and Ph.D. level research, organization, presentation, and writing. Perfectionism. Many academics would characterize themselves as perfectionists. To a certain extent, this is a healthy trait that promotes self-awareness and hard work. However, perfectionism can also be crippling as it can make you feel as if you can’t write a paper or make a comment unless it is absolutely brilliant. Remember, you are a student, not an expert. You are discovering new terms, concepts, and areas of study. Your first draft or class presentation will never be perfect, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
