Graduate study very challenging but not impossible HCS 504 September6, 2010 Dale Mueller

INTRODUCTION In the last few decades technology has grown in leaps and bound. The web world is not the “Black Hole” of information lucrative an addictive. Distance learning in the present time is an integral part of learning (Lyons, 2004). This has made it possible for the working adult to pursue continuing education without choosing between his career and putting food on the table for the loved one. The online learning environment is entirely different from the classroom environment. The student has endless access to loads of information; the study is convenient without time constraint. The paper sheds light on three prominent challenges I faced and the strategies I carried out to overcome these challenges. Statistics proves the popularity of online education I the year 2000 the universities in U.S.A. offered more 54,000 online course with 1.6 million student enrollment (Singh .P. & Pan .W. 2004). “Enthusiasm is excitement with inspiration, motivation, and a pinch of creativity” (Bo. B). with an inquisitive mind I carried out strategies to overcome them and obtain expertise. Time Management The key is not in spending time but in investing it (Covey.S.) (Latumahina.D, 2008). The initial week involved enormous amount reading, posting to be done. The stress of work and keeping up with my toddler’s demands also took toll. Returning back to learning was itself was a stressor. The initial days I was online for six to eight hours, sleeping only for four hours in the day, working 12 hours in the night. The third day I was falling apart, my educational counselor suggested techniques of time management that helped me. I genuinely benefitted from the following steps: get organized, avoid procrastination and reading into the questions, prioritize the work to be done, space out my learning throughout the week, set self deadlines, create a “to-do” list. Auditory Learner I identified myself to be an auditory learner during the first weeks learning. Initially it was very difficult to comprehend the materials online. An auditory learner can perceive the meaning of a statement by listening to the words. They need to read it aloud to memorize the given topic. So I started reading the questions, the reading materials aloud. Read the questions in a slow pitched tone for better perception. I also started saying what I was typing. Ensure all auditory distractions like T.V., etc turned off. These steps have helped me to learn better.

Working as a Team The team comprised of members from different time zones, work schedule, experience, and age. With all the individual variations it is difficult for team members to be on a common ground. Learning week two taught me to function as an effective team member. With knowledge of the importance communication skills, listening, patience, respect, coordination I started my team learning. The team charter was very helpful tool in understanding availability of team members. Having a leader and following to the decisions unanimously made team learning easier. The figure given below proves the efficiency of good team:

Conclusion

The online education is difficult but not impossible. The learning atmosphere is different but it is all about getting accustomed to the course of study. It requires more dedication and organization. I have to be focused on studies as nobody is there to will watch my back. Hence it is righteously called adult learning. Graduate Study Challenges

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success When deciding to return to graduate school, a person has made an excellent step in advantaging their knowledge in their particular career field. Before returning to graduate school, most people have given serious thought to the time commitment that they will have to face for the next two to four years. They have had many sleepless nights and day dreamed about the stress they will face to complete a graduate degree. Therefore entering a graduate program should not be taken lightly. In many disciplines it is required to have a graduate degree to practice independently in that career field (e.g. Social Worker and Psychologist). Nursing is now requiring nurses to have a graduate degree to advance into management positions. Employers are demanding their nurses to have more than just the knowledge to care for patients. They want the nurse who is placed in a management role to have the knowledge to be a leader. Nurses are returning to school to gain more knowledge in their career field, increase effective communication skills, have a higher potential for promotion, and to have a greater earning power. When deciding to return to graduate school, a student must have a strategy that is going to get them through the next two-four challenging years of their life. Personal and Professional Goals My reason for pursuing a graduate degree is to gain more knowledge in the healthcare industry, become a more effective...

...Mnguni HCS/504 November 19, 2012 Danielle Patrick The Expectancy Motivation and Self-Efficiency Value Fueled My Career Choice The decision to pursue graduate studies was not an overnight thought but a drawing board with careful planning and research. Career stagnancy and burnout was a major driving force fueled by motivation and commitment for self-actualization. According to Plunkett, Iwasiw, and Kerr (as cited in Eccles et al., 1983) Eccles et al. stated, the expectancy motivation value and self-efficiency are the determinants of career choices in college (Plunkett, Iwasiw, & Kerr, 2010). Expectancy motivation value is driven by the utility value, which is long-term usefulness of the task and intrinsic value, which is short-term value, whereas self-Efficiency stem from mastery of tasks and social persuasion (Plunkett, Iwasiw, & Kerr, 2010). The utility value, as displayed by my ambition to climb the clinical ladder will combat my career fatigue and burnout I have suffered in last few years. Lack of career advancement and development does not only affect the quality of nursing care but also patient satisfaction (Lorber and Skela, 2012). This goal will improve the quality of care I deliver to patients and self-esteem. My second long-term goal is acquisition of skills and knowledge needed for my field of study. Health care transformation to digital age, government mandated transition to paperless, and electronic medical record has opened a new market for nurse informatics...

Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success The decision to enter graduate school has been years in the making. Choosing to take time from my family to return to school is a difficult decision. Just as employers need employee buy in for successful performance. I too had to buy into the decision to enter the master's program. Health care is always evolving with information and advancements in various realms of the health care industry. Nurses are challenged to stay current by continually learning and advancing their skills (Houston, 2012). My purpose for pursuing a graduate degree is to grow as an individual and a professional. In three years, my employment status will likely change and acquiring a master's degree will open the job market. My professional goal is to work on the technical side of health care, perhaps writing my own ticket, while continuing working from my home office. Obtaining a master's degree will provide me with an edge in the job market. One of my biggest challenges of entering the master's program is pushing past the fear of committing to a two year program. Feeling at peace with my decision includes answering questions and addressing concerns. My concerns are performing to the best of my abilities and meeting deadlines, putting in the time for studying and writing papers, dealing with what seems like never-ending student loans again, and receiving a valuable return on investment. These concerns plus more fill my thoughts. My current...

It seem that all the factories were doing the same thing, so I knew that it was time I chose a different career. Not knowing what I wanted to do I signed up for general studies at Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington, Indiana. Six months in to the program my father in law had a heart attack. I spent the next three days and nights at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, one of the leading heart hospitals in our area. The nurses there were “awesome” they told me about everything they were doing and explained all the equipment and what it was for. If it was not for them explaining what to expect when I first walked in to the recovery room, I know that I would have passed out. Those three days helped me decide what I wanted to study, my original goal was to be a registered nurse specialized in cardiology. In June 2004 I graduated form the nursing program at Ivy Tech as a licensed practical nurse. I was employed at a long term care facility. Difference Between Graduate and Undergraduate Studies

...In my opinion one of the major difference between graduate and undergraduate studies is autonomy. In undergraduate studies, students are pretty much guided through the entire process. In some institutions, your undergrad advisor will almost hold your hand along the process. Not that I’m saying advisors don’t help you in graduate school, but there is more that is expected from you at this level. You are expected to be more independent and responsible while in graduate school. Another difference, is that during your graduate studies you are learning more specialized material. Usually, undergrad focuses on more broad and general concepts. However, in graduate school you are most likely specializing in a particular area within your field. The material is generally more intense and requires much more time. There is more reading and writing involved in graduate school. The amount of writing required throughout your undergraduate studies, is not nearly as much as your graduate studies require. You are required to do much more research, and are expected to present it in a professional manner. In most cases you are required to present a thesis at the end of you program. You are expected to be self-driven and self-motivated. I also believe that the information is much more interesting in graduate school. Since most student already probably work in the field, the material is often something one can relate to. This, in my opinion, makes it more interesting and enjoyable. Good luck to us...

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success HCS/504 August 6, 2012 John Dean Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success According to Linda Weston Kramer “Retuning to graduate school is a major decision in one’s professional life. Although there are many benefits to returning to school to earn a graduate degree, it is also very challenging” (Kramer, 2007, p. 158.). This essay discusses various challenges faced by graduate students, and strategies to overcome the challenges, from personal perspective. Personal and professional goals It is important to set personal and career goals before pursuing graduate study. Students need to discover the various courses offered, and select the one suit for them. This contributes a great deal of success because they choose what they want to, and where they want to reach. Goal setting and working toward achieving the goal is the key for success. My main long-term goal is career development. I want to complete my program within two years and find a job in Nursing/Informatics and go up in the ladder. When considering my short-term goal, I want to keep my GPA above 3.5, and acquire as much knowledge from this program by using the resources available. I want to improve my communication skills both written and verbal, and graduate study is the best platform for achieving that goal. It is important to prioritize the goals and choose the right path. Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success Conrad Cordova HCS/504 January 24, 2013 Kathy Watson Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Success I have made three monumental decisions in my life. The first was to join the military, which led to a very rewarding and exciting military career, where I refined the core values I live by today. The second life-changing decision, and greatest accomplishment, was getting married and starting a family, which I value most in my life. My decision to return to graduate school and pursue my Master’s degree and become an advanced practice nurse is the third most challenging decision of my life. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Do one thing every day that scares you” (Moncur, 2012). Starting graduate school, I felt the same fear, nervousness, and excitement I experienced with my other major decisions. Interestingly, I feel more nervousness going into this program than when I volunteered for a tour in Iraq. After 15-years as a nurse, I feel compelled to make a greater difference. I am very passionate about nursing and feel a “calling” to make a difference in my patients’ lives. As a critical care nurse, I can help save patients’ lives and make an immediate difference in their acute medical crisis, but once they leave my unit, they disappear, and I never know their long-term outcome. I yearn to develop the knowledge, skill, and expertise not to just care for them, but their whole family as a unit, and promote...

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success XXXXXXXXXXX HCS 504 January 22, 2012 Dr. William Weeks   Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success The unchecked block that has plagued like a festering boil on the derriere of life for the last decade as a requirement for rank is how I have viewed graduate school. Until this point in my life I lacked the direction necessary to know what I wanted to study in graduate school, it is that simple. I dabbled and knew, by past performance, I did not want to blindly follow, like a lemming, the paths taken by most of my colleagues: Anesthesia, family practice, critical care, or psychology. Like everything in my life, I had to be unconventional and find my own path and in my own time. This is but a brief introduction, my personal and professional goals, methods of coping with life, the ability (or inability) to communicate, and why I chose this advanced time in my life to pursue a graduate course of instruction. Professionally, I am a Lieutenant in the Nurse Corps (NC) of the United States Navy and a 24- Navy man. Personally, I am the loving and devoted husband to Debby, doting father to Millie and Mike and grandfather to Zack. If truth be told, I sometimes forget myself and have difficulty separating the military man from the family man, a problem my wife quickly remedies. My goals follow a semi-rigid construction professionally, I am anything but a conventional NC officer, but I desire...
