...this research paper is to show the impact that demographic factors have on student retention at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach). Our school has tried its best to improve its retention numbers these past ten years by implementing diverse programs geared towards keeping students in school. These programs were built using data provided by the Institutional Research department (IR) on our campus; the IR wishes to see whether student variables can predict retention. This document analyses the data collected from the IR and recent research related to individual student demographic characteristics such as gender, nationality and majors. I was born in San Francisco but raised in Senegal, a francophone West African country. I attended a French school and a bilingual one during my time there because my parents wanted me to be fluent and proficient in their languages (my mother’s first language is English and my dad’s is French). My background can only be beneficial into conducting such a research. I, for one, definitely understand the repercussions that demographics can have on a society or, in this case, a University. Anyone that knows a little bit about our campus can give at least three facts about it: the ratio of boy to girl is pretty big (5 to 1); the two main colleges are the Aviation and Engineering ones(76% altogether); and there are lots of international students (16% of student body). The retention rate at Embry-Riddle is 79%. The demographics of that...

...SHORT HISTORY OF THE ILOILO PROVINCIAL HIGH SCHOOL The Iloilo National High School (INHS) is a provincial high School located in Iloilo City, Philippines. The history of the Iloilo High School dates back to the later part of 1902 when a school called the Iloilo Normal School was established in a two-storey building in front of and across the street of the present Provincial Building (now Casa Plaza) to meet the future need for Filipino teachers. The minimum requirement for admission was the completion of the elementary education in the old Spanish schools. The first batch of teachers were selected from experienced American teachers. The first principal was Mr. Lutz, who, despite his past sixty years, was a very kind and understanding man. The initial enrolment was about 250 and was divided into 5 sections. By 1903, the school had a very active literary society called Philomathean and had also a strong baseball team. In 1904, Mr. Covell succeeded Mr. Lutz as principal. To accommodate more students, preparatory classes were organized. For the first time Filipino students were selected as government pensionados to continue their studies in the United States. Among those selected were Candido Alcazar, Ambrosio Gison, Delfin Jaranilla, Carlos Lopez, Leon Nava, Balbino Palmares, Graciano Rico, Cirilo Torreblanca and Felix Valencia. In 1905, Mr. Maxson succeeded Mr. Covell as principal. The pensionados then were Geronimo Huising, Isabelo Lagniton, Claro Pendon, and...

In recent history, the number of college-educated workers has actually risen, along with the pay of Americans with a college degree, compared to Americans without a college degree, whose pay has relatively stayed the same. College-educated Americans are more likely to be employed, and are more likely to make a lot more money during their lifetime, than Americans who didn’t graduate from a college Americans who graduated from college with a degree are more likely to have a higher income, than those who only graduated from high school. ...hypothesis remains unrefuted by facts, then the hypothesis is said to be verified or corroborated (BusinessDictionary.com, 2011). I reviewed the article “Inclusive Schools and Dropout Rates: A Phenomenological Approach” by Connie F. Holloway. The hypothesis involved how high schools in the study impacted students, the relationship between these schools and the increasing number of high school dropouts, and whether or not these students graduated without the skills or knowledge necessary to secure employment (Holloway, 2010). The study explained how educators expressed concerns with the increasing numbers of high school students not graduating, and how those who did graduated without the necessary tools for gainful employment. The study explains how this problem negatively affects the labor market and hurts the economy in this country. That many of the students are between 14 to 16, and come from lower income Black and Latino families. The study explains how concerns by many produced increased interest in alternative schools and programs, and how career technical schools may provide viable solutions toward decreasing the dropout rate (Holloway, 2010). The study provides a background citing the example of a National Football League player who suffered from the school system, and although he graduated did...

...Ordinarily, students who perform poorly in school in the United States are associated with a lack of intelligence. But there are various external factors that could impact a student’s academic performance, such as personal life or the quality of the school. However, one factor that has been contemplated as a major influence on academic success is race. Nationally, “black students graduated at a rate of 69 percent; Hispanics graduated at 73 percent [and] whites graduated at a rate of 86 percent”. The cause of this is not that one race is smarter than another—it is actually a combination of many other factors, such as access to education, poverty, or culture. For example, many students that are a part of impoverished families often need to enter...

...English 111 Kennedy, Cecilia Proposal Paper October 27, 2010 To Finish or Quit? High School dropouts represent an important problem that affects thousands of students each year. Roughly one third of all students will drop out of high school without having received their diplomas. According to The National Center for Education Statistics, "only 86% of the class of 1998 graduated." Many students today choose to graduate from high school and continue their education further whether it is technical training or a more formal degree. Why is it that 14% of high school students do not graduate? There are various plausible explanations that could alter a student from completing high school. Some examples for not graduating could include pregnancy, poor influences, no friends, poor grades, or simply lacking the motivation to finish. Dropping out of school is not only an educational problem but a significant social problem as well. Indeed, it has obvious psychological, economical, and social ramifications. For example, dropouts may undergo a loss of self-esteem and turn to drugs or become a financial burden to society. Nearly every student struggles with meeting their personal goals pertaining to grades. Some students may strive for all A's while others struggle to complete an assignment. Students who are struggling to receive credit may find it easier to quit. For some, this option may be less embarrassing than trying to graduate and fall short and not being able to...

...Little Rock Nine were nine African American students from Little Rock, Arkansas who enrolled at Central High School. No African American student was allowed to enroll in an all White school, until the Supreme Court passed a ruling in which schools would be integrated. It was a trying time for these nine students as they suffered through violence, hate, segregation, humiliation, and fear. Little did they know that their actions during the 1957-1958 school year would mark an important event that changed history forever. They endured massive amounts of pain during their ordeal of mainly trying to get an education. But they received help and support along the way. The Little Rock Nine shaped the educational systems and gave hope to a divided nation at the time. They would grow to be successful individuals and remembered as unsung heroes in Civil Rights history. The Little Rock Nine: The Crisis That Shaped a Nation In 1957, nine ordinary teenagers walked out of their homes and stepped up to the front lines in the battle for civil rights. ...Act, the Development Relief and Education for Alien Minor Act could change the lives of illegal immigrants. The Dream Act not only extends price cuts for in-state college tuition but speed up the citizenship process. Certain criteria must be met by the illegal immigrant students who have graduated from a United States high school before approval for Conditional Permanent Residency. Conditional Permanent Residency will allow an individual to work, drive, and travel aboard for long periods, up to 365 days in total for six years. Under the Dream Act the individual is eligible for loans and federal work-study programs but not federal financial aid such as Pell Grants (Miranda, 2011). The criteria for the Dream Act is basically good moral character, resides in the United States legally or illegally as a minor, and reside in this country for a minimum five years prior to this bill. The illegal minor must have lived in the U.S. before the age of 16. The illegal immigrant must have graduated from a U.S. high school or obtained GED or have been accepted into college, university, or military. For those who have not graduated, the Dream Act can help. The illegal minor enrolled in full-time primary or secondary school and are 12 years or older will also benefit. If requirements are meet, apply, and approved but failed to complete the two years of college or military, the individual is disqualified.
