MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--The West Virginia University baseball team defeated Virginia Tech 10-5 on Wednesday at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Mountaineers (25-21) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead to beat the Hokies (20-27) for the third consecutive time and ninth in the last 13 games. "We're having some consistency on offense," WVU head coach Randy Mazey said. "It appears we got our short game back, which disappeared for a while. I think we had three or four bunt hits tonight. We moved some runners, had some stolen bases and we got a lot of hits, but we didn't smash balls like we normally do. We didn't have a lot of extra base hits in the gaps, that type of thing. Darius Hill, Ivan Gonzalez and Brandon White all drove in two runs apiece.
Freshman right-hander Tristen Hudson earned the win, the first of his career. He surrendered a run on two hits with a walk through 1.2 innings. The Mountaineers scored 10 runs on 17 hits.
WVU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Zarbnisky led off the frame with a single and White walked. Then Hill doubled down the right field line, playing Zarbnisky and White. Then Gray extended the Mountaineers lead with a base hit to right center.
With one out, White knocked in two more runs on his base hit to right fielding, giving WVU a 5-0 lead.
In the third, three Virginia Tech errors led to two more runs for the Mountaineers. With the bases loaded, Galusky’s infield single scored Tyler Doanes. Zarbnisky's groundout plated Gonzalez, giving WVU a 7-0 advantage.
The Hokies got on the scoreboard in the fourth. With runners at the corners, Nick Menken singled up the middle. With bases loaded Hudson hit Nick Owens, bring home a run. Tech made it a 7-3 deficit on Gray's fielding error.
However, the Mountaineers responded in the bottom half to get a run back. Hill led off with a triple and scored on Marques Inman’s base
