Everyone aspires to be a leader. No one wants to be that quiet person in the room that passively sits back, while looking for the guidance of others. This was me for the longest time. It made me so upset because I wanted to be the one that innovated new ideas, and that others would go to for guidance. I knew I was a quiet kid, but it really reassured my feelings when my mother told me that my first grade teacher thought that I was a “follower and not a leader”. Words really do hurt, and I tried to brush it off like it was nothing, but I wanted to change the perception of myself so badly. Honestly, it is hard to come out of your shell when everyone always has these preconceptions about you. Ever since then, I have worked toward that one moment where I can step out of my shell, and show others what I’m made of. All I needed was the opportunity to prove others that they were wrong.

When I was six, I really didn’t really get what it truly meant to be a girl scout. All I knew was that we wore vests and got patches for things I didn’t even know that we had done. It wasn’t until last year that I truly had an understanding for what all those small badges had been leading up to.
