If possible, he is not to be killed, but brought before the Guild for judgment.”
“Thank you, Guild Master. You are most wise,” Coronados replied.
The Guild Master spoke once more, “You have been loyal to the Guild and for that reason we are going to give you a gift to bring our friend back into the fold.” He nodded toward a shadowy associate. Melinda looked from Gall at Britta, then back again. “I understand. Follow me.” She took Britta by the hand and led her toward an ornate doorway near the center of the island. Gall followed closely.
At the entrance, she turned to Gall. “You will not disturb the Mirror.” Her tone made it clear she was not making a request.
Gall nodded, and they descended winding steps into the depths of the island, to where the Mirror of Avalir spiraled as it had for at least a millennium. As they stepped through the archway into the chamber, Britta’s eyes widened. Though the Mirror appeared like an ordinary pool of water, she could sense that it did not belong to the physical world.
Melinda sighed and looked about the chamber. “She was here for only a few minutes when she used it. We attempted to stop her, but she had a Shatain with her.” Britta turned and found Melinda staring at Gall with hooded eyes.
Gall ignored Melinda and spoke to Britta. “We must begin the memory walk.”
Britta nodded, then closed her eyes as Gall’s voice rang in her ears.
