My Grandfather: A Blessing To Many

There are about seven billion people on this earth and each and everyone of us has met a lot of different people with unique stories to tell but only a few of these people have truly inspired us to become a better version of ourselves. I have never met him and I will never get the chance to meet him personally in this lifetime for he has passed away years ago; one thing is for sure, he absolutely inspired a lot of people, especially my mom’s side of the family. My grandfather, Cipriano Liwag Caraos, or better known as Panong, was born of the 22nd of September 1910 in a small bahay kubo in the province of San Jose, Batangas. He became orphaned at a very young age and was raised by Bitong and his wife Francisca, the sister of his biological father, Segundo Caraos. Francisca and Benito temporarily took care of him until they had children of their own. Due to this, Lolo Panong was only able to attend school up to the 4th grade. Later on, he stayed with his uncle Tranquillo Caraos in the small town of Tiaong Quezon. There Lolo Panong started earning on his own, involving himself in buying and selling products mainly in the fish industry; like trading kulambo in exchange for tinapa. Not so long after this, he started buying pieces of land in able to expand his business and soon became part of a Civic group named Kipaba-kilusang pang bayan, an association of prominent coconut buyers in Tiaong Quezon. On a regular sunny day, as Lolo Panong came along as a merchant from San Jose, he was able to witness the beauty of a young woman who would change his life forever. This young woman, Lorenza Amat, or better known as Isang, was an intern at the St. Agnes Academy in Lipa City Lorenza and Cipriano were loving parents to 15 children

My grandfather has a medium height and his clear black eyes contrasted nicely with his olive tone. There was a kindness in those eyes, and they always showed his in every emotion. My grandfather let me had a sweet childhood even though I did not grew up with my parents. When I was 5 years old, my parents decided to send me to my grandfather’s house, because they were too busy with their work to take care of me. That time was the third time I saw my grandfather because we didn’t live in same city. Therefore I was clinging to my parents thighs, I cried and shouted ask them to promise to stay. Finally, they still left even though I begged. After my parents had already left, I looked at my grandfather’s face with sobbing. At first glance, I felt my grandfather has a bad temper because he looked very serious and severe although he was angry about my parents were not responsible for me. I didn’t remember how long I cried. I just remember I followed my grandfather to my bedroom that had pink wallpaper. I stood by the bed and looked as he tidied up my stuff and asked me what kind of food I wanted to eat for dinner. At that moment I could not stop crying, so I didn’t say a word. I was sobbing. He looked at me and had a sigh, and then he left me alone. I forgot how long I slept, when I woke up and went to the living room. My grandfather sat there and watched the TV news...

Grandfather

...friends, and a caring grandfather to me and my cousins. My grandfather was born on June 13, 1929 in Dagupan City, Pangasinan. He is the fifth eldest child among his eleven siblings, but he acted like he was the eldest among all of them. He then met my grandmother when he was paired up with her in a family friend’s wedding. My grandmother said that they were both very shy to introduce themselves to each other, so her brother forced them to talk. They then got married and had six children, my mom being the youngest. He was, although not a professional, into odds and ends for survival. He was mostly known as the man with great recipes and who’d have a whistle with him whenever there’s traffic. He was a caring father who ensured that the needs of the family were provided even thought he did not have a stable job, and he took responsibility in looking after me and my cousins. My mother said that he is well-loved by the family that his love and care as a father was unconditional with a motherly touch of love. He was the type of father who’d stay at home and provide for everyone’s needs. While my grandmother was working, he would be the one to take care of his children by cooking them their favorite meals. Since my mother was the bunso of the family, she was definitely her “daddy’s girl”. She was simply innocent, and my grandfather loved that. He’d play her favorite song and dance with her every time she came from school. He was a doting grandfather, although a little bossy...

Seeing the World Differently: an Analysis of "When the Light Get Green"

...said that “Most of Warren’s best stories are painful, guilt-ridden commemorations of some young person’s rites of passage.” This story is no different. We see a kid return to the farm he loves, only to be met with questions. His grandfather, Mr. Barden, is not the same as he remembered. The grandson has trouble understanding his grandfather’s sudden flaws, and by reexamining his grandfather, is not capable of loving him anymore. At the beginning of the story we follow the grandson’s memory of what his grandfather looked like. The first line says “My grandfather had a long white beard and sat under the cedar tree.” This was how he imagined his grandfather while he was at school, but when he returned he was shocked to see that the beard was actually “gray and pointed.” This opening paragraph sets the tone for the entire story. The grandson had a majestic image of his grandfather in his mind, but the passage of time sheds light on imperfections that were previously unimportant. Paul Runyon says that “’When the Light Gets Green’ is a strongly autobiographical reminiscence of his grandfather Penn.” Runyon point helps show that this story is about the coming of age period in a young man’s life. The grandson continues to analyze his grandfather, who is looking into a “wavy green mirror.” The mirror is an interesting symbol in this scene. A wavy mirror makes it seem as though it would alter the appearance anyone who was looking into it. Also the idea of looking at a reflection...

Inter Generational Interview

...as a society have progressed so quickly over the last 50 years. Until conducting these interviews I was not aware of the immense amount of progress, and in some cases amount of deterioration, that we as a society have caused. It is obvious in the way that human beings have treated things like environmental sustainability, civic engagement and social justice over this time and this paper will be examining how these ideas have are different to generation. While interviewing my grandfather I was able to gather lots of information about not just the time he lived in, but also some information about himself that I had not previously known. He started off the interview by telling me about his childhood. My grandfather was born in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1940 and as many know this was the year that Germany began its occupation of the Netherlands. He grew up in a rural area and spoke about how little food him and his family had due to the conflict happening in his home country. When I asked my Grandfather about his childhood he told me there was little to be...

The Sidewalk That Held Diamonds

...instant of time a cutting pain hit my heart and I knew without a doubt in my mind the reason why my mother was crying. I ran towards her and wrapped my arms around her. As I stood there hugging my mother every emotion that was projected by my mother’s scream rushed in to me. It was an uncontrollable wave hitting me and then surrounding me with the infinite matter of water which sole purpose was to drown me. A few days have gone by and here I was now standing in a graveyard surrounded by my family everyone dressed in dark colors. In front of me was a white coffin in a rectangle hole in the sand that held my grandfather. As I stood there I saw the sadness that came from the loss of my grandfather in my family’s eyes. I wondered what impact my grandfather made in our lives that made us feel this way now that he is gone. It was then that I remembered one thing that my grandfather said to me once “…everyone has...

Great Grandfather

...Adam Ismond Cheri Brown ENG 0950 SEC 116 June 6, 2012 The Great Life of Great-grandfather Pride and tradition was everything to my great-grandfather. He loved his wife, he loved his children, and he even loved working with his animals on the farm. Teaching his children were a real honor to him, he was not afraid to discipline them with a leather strap that he would grab from the plows. He gave his children daily chores, and even pulls them out of school not caring about an education, just teaching them to survive off his land just like his forefathers used to. His wife would always be home doing her daily duties, which entailed cooking, cleaning, washing, and sewing. My great-grandfather was a very violent man when something did not go his way or the farm equipment was not in operative order. His friends respected him for his honesty, loyalty and pride. My great-grandfather inspired me because of the good and bad stories that were told to me by my father and grandfather. I learned that discipline is very important when raising a family and running a farm. My grandfather also inspired me to have an open mind and to be fearless. When I would visit him in Penasco, I would still see him putting horseshoes on the horses, rounding the cattle in the mountains, or even moving heavy equipment. Every time I would visit, he would always have the same proud expression on his face, a fearless grin. His tools and farming equipment were always well taken care of, his leather for working...

Not My Grandfather

...Background Farming has forever been a part of the Schisler family. The farm was created by and has stayed alive to this day, through hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. Just outside of Astoria Illinois there is an old gravel road named Shaw/Schisler road. At the end of this road you will not find big fancy machinery, or state of the art buildings, you will not even find cable television. What you will find though is one of the last farms in the area that is still family owned and operated and one that has survived by using old-school farming techniques that have been passed down from one generation to the next. By no means is my family farm a big business or multi-million dollar agricultural enterprise, it is exactly what my great-great grandfather intended for it to be when he started it way back when, a family farm. Sadly I do not know how much longer I will be able to say that. The advancements in information systems and technology have made old school farming a thing of the past. No longer are farmers using almanacs or the fact that old Joe’s knees are hurting this year so it is going to be a harsh winter followed by a dry summer, which is bad news for the agriculture industry. With computers, phones, tablets, and many other electronic devices a farmer can stay up to date with soil trends, weather analysis, crop growth pattern, all while sitting on the front porch swing drinking cup of coffee. If it were up to me, I prefer the old ways of getting up off the porch swing...

Voting Restrictions

...Voting Restrictions By: Brittnay Smith Although the Civil War brought about many changes in the nation, some states were still biased when it came to politics. Before 1870, there many laws were passed with the intent on restricting certain people or races from voting; most created or implemented by Southern administrations and although all races had the right to vote, the South did not wish for African-Americans, Mexican-American, or certain whites to vote. However, after the ratification of the 14th and 15th amendments, minority races had a better chance to vote in federal elections, yet this did not impede the South’s attempts. The literacy tests, formally introduced in 1890, refers to state government practice of administering tests to prospective voters to test their literacy and determine their eligibility to vote. The tests were usually administered orally by white local officials; most questions concerned areas that mostly non-whites would not know. Alabama’s literacy test questions that were given to African Americans included naming all 67 county states judges in the state, the date Oklahoma was admitted into the Union, and stating how many bubbles were in a bar of soap. In light of this, the Supreme Court held that the literacy tests did not violate the 14th nor 15th amendment –but after a series of cases the Supreme Court restricted the use of the literacy test for non-English speaking citizens. Nevertheless, The Voting Rights Act of 1965 suspended the use of literary...

My Grandfather

...Everyone has a person in their lives that has inspired and in many ways shaped who you are today. My grandfather's name is John D. Bergeron he is a broad man, who stands roughly five foot six at one-hundred and ninety pounds. He is currently still with us today and moves with purpose, carrying himself with respect. My papa as I like to call him is a strong man and all who know him would say the same. The first thing you would notice is his enormous inner strength, and huge heart. When I was a kid I spent most of my time at my papas since the adults were off at work. For me my grandfather become my mentor, somebody I look up to and have the upmost respect for. when I was younger he taught me how to draw and later down the road how to paint. we would go all around Dartmouth and New Bedford to sketch at places such as Fort Taber, Fort Pheonix, and even the Whaling Museum. What amazes me is that he has never graduated from the eighth grade yet knows more than anybody I know. We like to say he is a jack of all trades master of none. In other words his lack of education doesn't show he can do anything from carpeting, wood work, art, even fixing cars you name it and he can probably do it. He went to work straight out of the eighth grade to help support his mother to put food on the table, this is something that I find admirable. Asides from being my mentor in art he managed to teach me many life lessons in which I wish to bring with me into the field...

The commitment to finish what was started instilled in me the confidence to open my life up to another human on a deeper level. Utilizing the tools I had been equipped with, I was able to follow through with the plans I had laid out and made one of my dreams come true. Concrete Experience While attending a Bible study with some friends, I was captivated by the host’s grandfather clock ticking away the seconds in the living room. The size and beautifully articulated detail that it expressed kept my mind pondering what it would be like to create a time keeper. My friend Doug noticed my stares and inquired if I had interest in woodworking. I told him I would love to build one of those clocks! He suggested I stop by his house the following week for lunch and he would show me around his shop. The following week, after enjoying tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, Doug and I walked out to his back yard and to my surprise he had a full woodworking shop. He showed me around the various projects he was working on and, whether boasting ornate detail or simple design, they were all magnificent projects to me. When we got to the back he told me he wanted to show me something.
