NASW Code of Ethics

Recently, I was faced with homelessness and therefore was able to see first hand some of the problems homeless people faced. The biggest problem was the way in which women were accepted into shelters in my area. This hindered my ability to get assistance from a shelter since I usually did not qualify for services. I considered lobbying or going to my alderman and mayor for assistance.

According to National Association of Social Workers (NASW) (2012), the code of ethics is mainly a guide for dealing with ethical issues and dilemmas in the social work practice. This was a guide on how a worker should behave and tell what steps they can take to rectify issues. The ethical issue in my case was being unable to find a shelter that would accept me. NASW advised workers should advocate for clients, my worker should have pushed to make changes, so that an agency could accept me. This would be considered an administration act. My worker should have also under Social Workers ethical responsibility to the profession did research, active discussion, and offered criticism to make changes for all of the clients whose needs were not being met.

I think this code of conduct would have guided my worker in the right direction. It helps by giving ground rules for situations a social worker may face. It gives advice on what can be done. I think it is adequate for its purpose. I would suggest NASW advice social workers of resources they can use to when they are unsure of what to

Grant Proposal

...Grant Proposals It doesn’t matter if the business is just an agency, organization, for profit or non-profit they need money to operate. Profit companies focus on getting their funding through revenues and interest-bearing loans. Non-profit companies depend on grants, loans, and public generosity. It is a must to understand that non-profit agencies are businesses too and they also need a way to pay for their expenses. Writing grants is the way an agency finds funding. Either an employee professional grant writer or having administrative personnel to write the proposals, they then submit them for review to potential donors. Writing grants proposals is far from an easy to deal with. There are deadlines, awareness of what programs a funder is looking to invest their time and money into. Details for the application are an important part to writing a grant. Some are short and don’t require much information, while others require detailed description of the program. This is the grant writer’s priority to make sure that it meets requirement and all the information that is needed is there. The primary point to a proposal is that is to get their program out there and to make it clear and honest picture of the organization project for those funding and in general. The writer must convince the review committee that their program is the best to choose. Grant proposals are the entrance to a organization, and creative writing can either win the committee over or break the deal. The information...

Private Grant

...Private Grant Discounting tuition towards disaster. Study the effects of college tuition discounting. Findings indicated that: 1. At least 1/4 of the colleges and universities used discounting strategies that resulted in large losses of tuition revenue 2. Institutions with the greatest increases in discount rates raised their spending on institutional grants by $3,375 per undergraduate, but their tuition and fee revenue grew by just $3,069; 3. Discounting strategies do not appear to have significantly improved the academic profiles of admitted undergraduates when measured by changes in median admissions test scores of entering first-year students 4. Tuition discounting appear to have helped institutions increase their number of low-income undergraduates 5. Increased use of tuition discounting appear to have made it possible for more students from all income levels to enter higher education. Colleges and universities have several distinct goals for using tuition discounts: * to increase enrollments of low-income and other under-represented students; * to raise enrollments of students with high academic achievements or other talents; * To increase revenue from tuition and fees. However, the results show that at least one quarter of the four-year private colleges and universities used discounting strategies that resulted in large losses of tuition revenue. The institutions with the greatest increases in discount rates raised their spending...

Grant Funding for Homeless Programs

...Grant Participation Part II 2 Grant Participation Part II The Salvation Army’s Alegria Program provides services to families who have a member living with HIV/AIDS and do not have any other housing options. Initially the program is set up in three phases. The first phase is emergency housing, and if need be clients then transfer into the transitional housing phase, and upon further stabilization (as well as vacancies) families then move into the third phase, which is permanent housing. The Salvation Army was seeking to fund 16 transitional housing units, and as a result applied for a government grant through LAHSA (The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority). The role of this writer was to contact appropriate departments in order to obtain certain documents so that they may be submitted along with the RFP. This was somewhat challenging because departments were inundated with requests from other programs due to the submission of grant renewals and quarterly reports . This writer had to make several attempts to obtain some of the paperwork. Departments contacted included: the finance department, in order to request copies of financial audit reports, as well as assurances, IRS paperwork demonstrating proof of nonprofit status, the development department in order to obtain information on current donations from donors, etc. This writer also had to communicate with the grants manager as well as the executive director of social services, and the executive director of...

Ulysses Grant

...Ulysses S. Grant (2002) Program Transcript Part One Narrator: October 23, 1863. Chattanooga, Tennessee. After a grueling four-day journey, General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Union headquarters. He had injured his leg and had to be helped off his horse. Once again, he was dogged by rumors that he'd been drinking. He listened silently as his officers described a bleak situation. The Union Army was surrounded. Men and horses faced starvation. A Confederate victory seemed inevitable. Grant thanked his men, and began to write his orders. Max Byrd, Novelist: You see a lot of Grant in just that act of writing. The concentration and the determination. He never looked up. He never hesitated. He never seemed to search for a word. Geoffrey Perr et, Biographer: By the time he'd finished, he was surrounded by pieces of, of paper that he'd covered with his, his very even hand writing. In effect, he had fought the battle already in his o wn mind. Narrator: Before the war, Grant had been a nobody, a failure as a farmer and a businessman. As Commanding General, he was called an incompetent, a butcher. But he would win every campaign he ever fought. His plain, Midwestern w ays would captivate the American people. David W. Blight, Historian: There was something about that element of the American dream of that rags to riches story. He had experienced humiliation and he had understood failure. And I suspect a lot of Americans could see themselves in him. Donald Miller, Historian: Grant, not Lincoln...

Ulysses S Grant

...Ulysses S Grant: An American Hero Shreya Joshi Social Studies Mr. Nieskens May 27, 2014 In the 1800’s, the United States was a growing and thriving nation. In the South, many plantations were producing mass amounts of cotton. To keep up with the cotton demand, plantation owners bought more slaves to grow and harvest the cotton. The cotton and slave industry’s blossomed because of Eli Whitney’s cotton gin (Cayton et al 274). By 1850, the country had conflicting views because slavery became a growing issue. In fact, the main reason for the Union separating was over slavery being illegal or not. The Union broke up under Lincoln’s presidency when South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860 (371). The upper South seceded as well and founded a new country called The Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy. The war begins after they secede. Born Hiram Ulysses Grant, he led the Union to victory in the Civil War and wrote a heroic legacy. Grant fought in the Mexican and Civil wars. At the age of 15, he applied to West Point Military Academy and was barely accepted (Rickarby 6). Due to his background with working with horses, he was an excellent cavalryman. While in the army, he was promoted quickly. For a short period of time, Grant quit the army, yet regretted quickly. He failed at everything he tried before rejoining the army, proving he was meant for the army (Simon 6). He had written an incredible military history, which led him to have a successful...

Grant vs. Lee

...Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee are two of the most famous generals of the American Civil War. These generals grew up very differently, but turned out to be similar in their courage, leadership and their ability to turn war into peace (Catton 405). Lee represented family and tradition, where as Grant stood for change, and moving forward. Although, tradition is very important and something I admire, I believe that in circumstances such as the Civil War, Grant and his position on looking toward the future is what was important. Based on Catton’s essay, “Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts,” I admire Grant and what he stood for. Lee grew up in Virginia (Catton 405). His family was devoted to tradition, family and culture (Catton 405). Lee believed that their should be “pronounced inequality” among the people, this way the leaders would rise to the top (Catton 406). Grant was very different on the other hand. He was born on the Western frontier (Catton 406). Growing up this way taught Grant to be more self-reliant and to look toward the future instead of the past (Catton 406). Both Grant and Lee would fight with as much tenacity as the other, but Grant was fighting for society, where as Lee fought for tradition (Catton 407). Lee refused change. This is where I believe he went wrong, and why I support Grant. In my eyes, I view America as a place of freedom, independence, and equality. Lee believed that there was an advantage to having inequality among the society...

Compare And Contrast Lee And Grant

...greatest general, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. These two stand out because of their success, with fighting style, military experiences before the war, and victories in battle. Lee's success at the beginning of the war helped boost the southern morale, while Grant's success down the stretch helped the north pull off the victory. These two men were completely opposites in their experience before the war. Robert E. Lee graduated at the top of the class, whereas Grant graduated twenty-first out of thirty-nine in his class. After graduating, both men went into service during the Mexican-American War. Grant got to the rank of captain, under the command of Zachary Taylor. On the other hand, Lee was only an advisor to General Winfield Scott on battle strategies. Lee's reputation for battle strategies carried over into the Civil War. Both men started out the Civil War under commanding officers; however Lee would be the first to become the General-In-Chief in 1861. Grant would not take up this post until 1864, the last year of the war. This shows the strategic masterpieces of both generals. Both men were...

Major universities such as the University of Arizona, Nebraska, Washington State, Clemson, and Cornell were chartered as land-grant schools (“100 Milestones”). Land grant colleges and universities are institutions that receive the benefits of the Morrill Act of 1862 and similar acts of Congress (“100 Milestones”). This paper will discuss the origins of college land grants through the Morrill Act of 1862; give brief historical overview of the application of this and other college land grant acts; and the relevance of college land grants in the United States during current times. Initially, the idea of college land grants was debated during the 1850’s. However it wasn’t until The Morrill Act of 1862 that the idea became law (Mansoor). The law was named after U.S. Congressman from Vermont, Justin Smith Morrill (Mansoor). Ulysses S Grant Roller Coaster

...Simpson Grant. Grant is considered one of the most important men for the Union during the Civil War and he rode that fame into the White House. His roller coaster life had many lows that would have crushed the average man, which made is highs even grander. This is story of Ulysses S. Grant, his early life, early military career, Mexican War, Civil War and finally his presidency. Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27th 1822 to the name of Hiram Ulysses Grant1. His father, Jesse Grant, was a tanner and mildly successful business man. Ulysses did not have the same knack for business or tanning as his father. As a matter of fact, he did not really have a knack for much of anything, other than horses. His small stature, poor family and lack of good business knowledge quickly made him the laughing stock of his community. He was known to have tried to haggle a deal to buy a colt. Instead of offering low, he offered his low price, middle price and high price all in the same offer. Needless to say the horses’ owner sold the colt for the highest price2. This lack of common business sense and the fact that Ulysses did not want to be a tanner left his father with few options. Jesse Grant did not want his son to fail at life so he enrolled him into West Point. He did not know if Ulysses would be a good soldier, but he did want him to have a good education. This decision would not only change Ulysses life, but also the fate of the Union. ________________________ 1. “Ulysses S. Grant Biography...

Ulysses S. Grant Domestic Policy

...When Ulysses S. Grant was elected, it was during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War. Grant being a beloved war hero was setup for success by a republican controlled congress which he had a strong connection with. His domestic and foreign policy although not widely successful would shape our country in the years following his presidency. Grant had decided to rebuild the South instead of punish them for their actions during war. However, Grant struggled due to the fact he now had to balance reconstruction with the protection of the newly freed African American community. While initially successful, he quickly met harsh resistance and often had to use the army and federal legislation to protect the black community according to the Miller...
