...6 January 2014 My dear Ateneo Scholars, Let me greet you a Happy New Year! It comes from a heart filled with joy from having read all your cards and letters. It was the best part of being Acting VP – to receive the volumes of lovely cards and greetings and sentiments. As you expressed thanks to me for the role and the function that translated into granting you scholarships, I also express gratitude for your ability to say ‘thank you’ and for the great things that you have done even while you are still students. 1 While reading your letters and greetings, I said to myself, how wonderful it is to be in Ateneo where students ‘get it!’ – these ideas of excellence and service are not just lip service; they are actualized in the students, in you. All this makes me proud of you! I wish you all the good things in life. And I also wish and pray that when you already have them to the full, you will not spill this to waste it but to make others live as well. I’m confident that you will. I look forward to that time when you will come back to us to tell us about the ‘harvest that is plenty’ and blessed by the Lord. See you around the campus. I know I won’t be able to recognize you but please tap my shoulder when you see me and tell me who you are. We can also chat if you like sometime. Have a great student life as Ateneans. Have a blessed New Year! Warm regards, MARIA LUZ C. VILCHES Dean P.S. I wrote a poem on New Year’s day and I hope you like it. It was inspired by the aftermath...

...Gratitude and Well-Being Philip C. Watkins Eastern Washington University Content This chapter attempts to review the research that speaks to the relationship between gratitude and well-being. Considerable evidence shows that gratitude is associated with emotional and social well-being, and experimental work has provided promising evidence that gratitude causes enhancements in well-being. I propose that gratitude supports well-being because it amplifies the good in one’s life. Gratitude and Well-Being Gratitude is the most pleasant of virtues, though not the easiest…. Gratitude is a mystery, not because of the pleasure it affords us but because of the obstacles we must overcome to feel it. It is the most pleasant of virtues and the most virtuous of pleasures. -Comte-Sponville (2002), p. 132 At a recent convention a colleague asked me, “Why is gratitude so great?” His question came about while discussing the many virtues that seem to result from gratitude (Watkins, 2004; Watkins, Van Gelder & Frias, 2009; Wood, Froh & Geraghty, 2010). In this chapter I will seek to answer this important question. In pursuing this goal I will first attempt to define gratitude and I will present several ways of assessing this emotion and virtue. I will then review the research that speaks to the issue of whether gratitude is all that “great.” Third, I will explore the “how” of gratitude; I will suggest several mechanisms that might help explain how gratitude...

...May 10, 2012 MR. & MRS. GUALBERTO ARANAS Dear Mr. & Mrs. Aranas, Greetings of peace! We cordially extend our heartfelt gratitude to you and your office for the invaluable assistance you have extended to the Archdiocese of Palo, in our preparations and during the installation and canonical possession of the fourth Archbishop of Palo, His Grace Most Reverend John Forrosuelo Du, D. D. yesterday, May 9, at the Palo Metropolitan Cathedral. The reception in Ormoc of the Archbishop and his faithful from Dumaguete and their travel to Palo last May 8 went smoothly. The guests – bishops, priests, religious and lay people alike – enjoyed the simple dinner and short program at the ARCIVU Hall (Palo Metropolitan Cathedral) during the evening. On May 9, the day of the installation itself, we were blessed with a fine weather. The papal nuncio and head of the Diplomatic Corps, His Grace Most Rev. Giuseppe Pinto, D. D., the two cardinals and 61 bishops, and our local government officials graced the installation and canonical possession of Archbishop Du. The luncheon at 12:oo noon was held at Sacred Heart Seminary grounds while cultural presentations entertained our visitors. The whole event was indeed a success thanks to the many persons – thanks to you - who extended their generous assistance. And for the many other favors you and your office have extended to us, again, thank you very much! Cordially in Christ, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Jaime...

...Rosemary, thanks for your points. I find one very important note in your reading and that is, that dealing with people is directly related to their various backgrounds. It is very important that we understand and know that not all people have the same backgrounds or even the same access to resources. Being poor is a great struggle within itself, but when you compound that with being , homeless and hungry, that’s even more complicated. I know from first hand of being a young single mother, trying to make ends meet, ends meeting meant sacrificing “something.” The “something” may have been sacrificing my own meal in order for my child to eat. I remember using charity resources that would offer assistance with housing and food. I am ever so thankful to God for his grace. God placed people in position at the time when I needed them most. The workers at the facilities that I used in Kansas were absolutely phenomenal. They helped me in so many ways, without being judgmental. I was young, single, and broke, far away from family, hungry, practically homeless, a mother and definitely misguided. They helped me by putting me on a path back to work and helped to build my self esteem through counseling. They provided more than enough. That is why I am able to stand firm today on one of my favorite verses, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:19, King James Version) You are so correct when you quote the Bible, “I...
