...Gratitude Letter It required me a good amount of time to decide who to send my gratitude letter to and it also caused me a bit of uncomfortableness because I'm not such an open person with regards to sentiments. However, I chose to send a letter to my mother who is a very nice and hardworking person. I decided to send a letter through mail despite the fact that I am currently living with her at her house. I adore doing things the old way since it feels much more genuine and real. It felt special to spend some time and energy in setting up the envelope and accomplish something just to show appreciation without expecting anything consequently. When my mom received a letter she was truly stunned and was not expecting this from me because we are not really open to each other in fact we have some sort of cold relationship. My mom and I don’t get along very well. she spends most of her time talking about her sister’s daughter and comparing her life with me. I really do not like this and because of this I didn’t want to consider my mom for this assignment. Regardless I chose to send my mother the letter since I knew despite the fact that she doesn't generally value me that much yet at the same time she has done a great deal to me. She raised me, taught me so much and most importantly cooked food for me consistently and still does it. I like every little thing about my mom aside from the part that she thinks more about her niece than her own daughter. I wouldn’t mind this at all but...

...Gratitude and Well-Being Philip C. Watkins Eastern Washington University Content This chapter attempts to review the research that speaks to the relationship between gratitude and well-being. Considerable evidence shows that gratitude is associated with emotional and social well-being, and experimental work has provided promising evidence that gratitude causes enhancements in well-being. I propose that gratitude supports well-being because it amplifies the good in one’s life. Gratitude and Well-Being Gratitude is the most pleasant of virtues, though not the easiest…. Gratitude is a mystery, not because of the pleasure it affords us but because of the obstacles we must overcome to feel it. It is the most pleasant of virtues and the most virtuous of pleasures. -Comte-Sponville (2002), p. 132 At a recent convention a colleague asked me, “Why is gratitude so great?” His question came about while discussing the many virtues that seem to result from gratitude (Watkins, 2004; Watkins, Van Gelder & Frias, 2009; Wood, Froh & Geraghty, 2010). In this chapter I will seek to answer this important question. In pursuing this goal I will first attempt to define gratitude and I will present several ways of assessing this emotion and virtue. I will then review the research that speaks to the issue of whether gratitude is all that “great.” Third, I will explore the “how” of gratitude; I will suggest several mechanisms that might help explain how gratitude...

...an invaluable teacher for him, Gately, as Staff. “So then at forty-six years of age I came here to learn to live by clichés” is what Day says to Charlotte Treat right after Randy Lenz asked what time it was at 0825. “To turn my will and life over to the care of clichés. One day at a time. Easy does it. First things first. Ask for help. Thy will not mine be done. It works if you work it. Grow or go. Keep coming back.” Poor old Charlotte Treat, needlepointing primly beside him on the old vinyl couch that just came from Goodwill, purses her lips. “You need to ask for some gratitude.” “Oh no but the point is that I’ve already been fortunate enough to receive gratitude.” Day crosses one leg over the other in a way that inclines his whole little soft body toward her. “For which, believe you me, I’m grateful. I cultivate gratitude. That’s part of the system of clichés I’m here to live by. An attitude of gratitude. A grateful drunk will never drink. I know the actual cliché is ‘A grateful heart will never drink,’ but since organs can’t properly be said to imbibe and I’m still afflicted with just enough self-will to decline to live by utter non sequiturs, as opposed to just good old clichés, I’m taking the doubtless hazardous liberty of light amendment. Albeit grateful amendment, of course.” Charlotte Treat looks over to Gately for some sort of help or Staff enforcement of dogma. The poor bitch is clueless. All of them are clueless, still. Gately reminds himself that he too is probably...

As we inched closer to the orphanage, her orphanage, I knew that we were passing the streets where our daughter spent her first months on this earth. My heart ached as I gazed out the window of our van. I had to remind myself to breathe, as I sat in disbelief watching this world, her world, pass by. It was truly unlike anything I had seen or experienced before. Knowing that our precious girl had lived here in this place left me numb. Our arrival at the orphanage was met with shrieks of joy and sweet, quiet voices whispering "Thank you!" in an effort to express gratitude in our own language. I tried to look into each set of eyes as they came up for hugs. I wanted to just hold them all tightly and tell them they are dearly loved by our Father in Heaven. I wished I could sweep them away from this place and show them that the world outside of those gates can be bright and vibrant and beautiful. Their eyes each told a story. A story of loss and despair. Each...

...Happiness: Gratitude FYSM Gratitude has the ability to make people happier. Throughout my research I have found numerous studies that have conducted experiments and done observations proving this to be true. There are many ways to define gratitude, and just as many ways to exemplify its connection to happiness. Smith Scott, the author of Psychology: Please Pass the Gratitude, said that the best explanation he has heard was by a man named Joseph Krutch who said, “Happiness is itself a kind of gratitude” (Smith, 2007). As mentioned in Time Magazine, “Of course, happiness is not a static state. Even the happiest of people — the cheeriest 10% -- feel blue at times. And even the bluest have their moments of joy” (Wallis, 2005). This being said, there must be a reason as to why people become happy and gratitude is in fact a part of that reason. When people think of gratitude they tend to relate it to everyday things, such as saying thank you so someone who held the door for you, writing a card for your friend’s birthday, or something else along those lines. However, a study done by Lung Hung Chen and Ying Hwa Kee demonstrates a method that is less thought of, if thought of at all by many. They studied gratitude and its correlation with the well-being of athletes. During the study, they used two separate groups which each had a different focus. Group 1 consisted of senior high school athletes and was designed to look at the relationship between dispositional gratitude and well-being...

...How to Smile John Lennon once said, “Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.” If his saying was true, most people must be two or three hundred years old according to their face-book pages. However, their life must be miserable since I hardly see anyone smile to a strange on a busy street anymore. Smile and be happy are not just a formal act of friendliness, but it’s also a way to experience life. Although no one can be happy all the time, you can practice convincing yourself to be happy, because after all life is too precious to waste it. As a waiter, customers often asked me, “You smile all the time, how can you be happy every day?” I answer something along the lines like, “You know, life is good!” or “The smell from our food makes me smile.” If a coworker asks then I typically reply, “It’s a tip from years of experience. The longer you serve, the brighter your smile is.” This response makes my coworker thinks that although work is not like Disneyland, it is still possible to put up a smile and lift up the whole atmosphere. Servers are trained to smile all the time because a business owner knows that happiness is transmittable. A happy server makes happy customers, happy customers will come back and even bring a friend with them next time. As a server, I smile not only to fill up my tip jar, but also to lift the spirits of my coworkers. Hence, I can spread my happiness to everyone they interact with for the rest of the night. There is...
