In the movie The Great Debaters the father son relationship between Sr. James Farmer and James Famer Jr. also between Melvin Tolson and Henry Lowe. When it comes to fathers and sons usually each of them wants different things for each other. In this case be have the best of both worlds.

Sr. James Farmer and James Jr. have a pretty normal father son relationship, the father wants his son to be the best he can be. While also keeping him distracted by the real world around him, all of the bad things that are going on. For example when the pig farmer pulls out a gun as a threat to kill Sr. James Farmer for killing his pig unintentionally, without paying him. Also when James Jr. followed Mr. Tolson into the woods into a random barn, and saw a bunch of farmers gather together to end the democracy. These are things that Sr. James Farmer did not want his son to see especially at only an age of a fourteen year old. James comes running to his father to tell him the great news about him making the debating team and his father does not seem to be all excited about it. Sr. James seems to be more worried about his son getting his schoolwork done. James Jr. suffers from his father imposing him, near titanic presence of his scholar father.
Sr. James had had a big influence on James Jr. for a number of reasons. One because he was a very successful man. James wanted to grow up to be just like his old man.
As the movie goes on the relationship between Sr. James and James Jr. grows throughout the movie. The both of them go from having just a man to child relationship, to a father son relationship. Each of them becomes close with each other and learns more about each other.

The first night that Mr. Tolson had ever met Henry Lowe was when he was at a party during the summer time and was about to stab a man. Mr. Tolson ran in and stopped Henry from killing the man. Once school had started Henry had realized that his teacher was the man that stopped him in the fight. Even though he had not even know the man he had been like a father and stopped him from making a stupid move. Their relationship becomes very strong when they are in the car heading to the Howard University College for another debate. They are joking around at the way Henry cannot read a map. As they keep driving they then drive into a nigger being lynched right in the middle of the road.
Mr. Tolson and Henry had a pretty good relationship from the start. But with time Henry realizes that Mr. Tolson has taught him a lot more than he could even imagine, just by being on the debate team.

...The Great Debaters was a very powerful and inspirational movie. Watching Denzel, known as Mr. Tolson, lead his debate team to such high success in a time and place where black success was so heavily denied inspired my own academic success. The ability for a group of young children to be victimized by such racism and such denial of basic freedoms and have the capability to rise above and succeed against not only fellow black colleges, but white colleges as well. It was truly a movie of motivation to show how desire, dedication, and perseverance can prevail even in the toughest of times and the toughest of circumstances. During the time, Negro hate and racism was heavily practiced particularly in the state of Texas where Wiley College existed. Not only was the government enforcing unjust laws, they were denying any sort of freedom of speech which all Americans have the right of. In a country where we are all born as free men and are all granted rights as citizens, Blacks were an exception. Is this not unjust? Is this not a crime violating the constitution of this country? In the state of Texas, negroes were being lynched and tortured because of the rise against the status quo, and here we had a group of college students civilly disobeying the law. How can a man born in the U.S by law being given rights granted by the constitution be lynched and burned on the stake with no justice? ...THE GREAT DEBATERS Based on a true story, the plot revolves around the efforts of debate coach Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington) at historically black Wiley College to place his team on equal footing with whites in the American South during the 1930s, when Jim Crow laws were common and lynch mobs were a pervasive fear for blacks. In the movie, the Wiley team eventually succeeds to the point where they are able to debate Harvard University. This was their 47th annual debate team. Released in 2007, Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters was presented to the world in order to tell the story of Wiley College’s debate triumphs. While certain facts were altered for the sake of creating the film, such as the final debate being between Wiley College and Harvard rather than USC, the story of the Wiley College debate team has been a model of and for the Urban Debate League (UDL) Movement. The ability to communicate effectively is necessary in all aspects of life, especially when debating a subject.
